Halloween Fancy Dress for Couples: 12 British Pairings by Budget
The easiest Halloween fancy dress for couples is a pairing that explains itself at a glance, and in the UK you can build one at three price points: under £15 for two from charity shops and your own wardrobe, £15 to £40 from supermarket and high-street ranges, or £40 and up for an all-out build. Those bands are our estimates for two people, not retailer quotes.
Plan for the photo as much as the party. 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so your couple photo gets seen on a small vertical screen, more than once. Safety is the other number that matters: in 2024 government tests, 28 of 128 children's Halloween costumes failed the toy flammability standard. Below are 12 public-domain British pairings, a costed comparison, what UK rules cover, and how to send the photo afterwards.
What makes couples' fancy dress work?
Couples' fancy dress is two costumes built as one idea, where each half explains the other: a ghost needs its ghost hunter, a monster needs its maker. Apart, either costume is fine; together, the pair is the joke.
A 2026 Behavioral Sciences study of 565 pet owners (pets, not partners) describes coordinated outfits as co-consumption that puts a relationship on display, building on earlier work on Korean couples' wear. It also found a twist: the link between feeling close and wanting to match was weaker among people highly involved in fashion.
Read cautiously, the partner who "doesn't do fancy dress" may be won over by the "we match" part rather than the costume. A 2009 West Virginia University dissertation surveyed 153 married couples and observed 46 couples' "public performances", how a couple presents as one unit in front of friends and family. A fancy dress party is the most literal version.
Under £15 for two: 5 charity-shop and DIY pairings
Charity shops are strongest on raw materials: dark jackets, white shirts, waistcoats and old bedding. Costs are our estimates.
1. Jekyll and Hyde
- The look: one respectable Victorian doctor, and the same outfit wrecked. Stevenson published the story in 1886.
- Get: two white shirts and dark waistcoats; rip and stain one set.
- Cost for two: about £10 to £14 (estimate).
- Time: one evening.
2. The ghost and the ghost hunter
- The look: a classic sheet ghost, beside a wax jacket, torch and notebook.
- Get: one old single sheet and a torch you own.
- Cost for two: about £3 to £8 (estimate).
- Time: 30 minutes. Cut wide eye holes; sheets kill peripheral vision on stairs.
3. Guy Fawkes and the barrel of gunpowder
- The look: a plotter in a black cloak and tall hat, with a cardboard barrel stencilled "GUNPOWDER". Bonfire Night is 5 November, so the joke works twice.
- Get: a large box, brown paint, two straps, a charity-shop cloak.
- Cost for two: about £8 to £15 (estimate).
- Time: an afternoon. Wear it to the party, never the bonfire.
4. The skeleton pearly king and queen
- The look: London's button-covered pearly tradition crossed with skull face paint.
- Get: two dark jackets and a bag of white buttons.
- Cost for two: about £10 to £15 (estimate).
- Time: three to four hours sewing, or one with a glue gun.
5. The scarecrow and the crow
- The look: a checked shirt stuffed with straw, against all black and a card beak.
- Get: pet-shop straw, a black hoodie, card and elastic.
- Cost for two: about £8 to £12 (estimate).
- Time: one hour. Straw is the most flammable thing here; keep it away from candlelit pumpkins.
£15 to £40 for two: 4 high-street pairings
Supermarket clothing ranges and high-street chains usually stock capes, wigs and face paint from late September. Costs are estimates.
6. Henry VIII and a headless Anne Boleyn
- The look: the Tudor king and his second wife, carrying her own head. Anne Boleyn was executed at the Tower of London in 1536.
- Get: a padded tunic and crown; a dark dress, card French hood and polystyrene head.
- Cost for two: about £25 to £40 (estimate).
- Time: two to three hours.
7. Count Dracula and Mina
- The look: Bram Stoker's 1897 novel brings Dracula ashore at Whitby, a very British vampire landing.
- Get: a cape and fangs; a high-necked blouse and a scarf hiding two painted dots.
- Cost for two: about £20 to £35 (estimate).
- Time: one hour.
8. Mary Shelley and her creature
- The look: the author with quill and manuscript, beside the monster she wrote. Frankenstein was published in 1818.
- Get: a Regency-style shawl; green face paint, a too-small jacket and neck bolts.
- Cost for two: about £20 to £35 (estimate).
- Time: one to two hours, mostly face paint.
9. Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles
- The look: a deerstalker and cape, with a black dog onesie streaked in glow paint. Conan Doyle's 1902 novel puts a spectral hound on Dartmoor.
- Get: the Victorian book look, not any TV adaptation's styling.
- Cost for two: about £25 to £40 (estimate).
- Time: one hour.
£40 and up: 3 all-out builds
These take a weekend. They also get photographed most.
10. The plague doctor and the patient
- The look: a beaked mask, long coat and wide hat, beside a pale, bandaged patient.
- Get: a full-face beak mask, crepe bandages and special-effects make-up.
- Cost for two: about £45 to £80 (estimate).
- Time: a weekend. Check you can breathe and see in the mask first.
11. Herne the Hunter and the Windsor oak
- The look: in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, printed in 1602, Herne is a ghostly hunter with ragged horns who walks round an oak in Windsor Forest. One wears antlers; the other is the oak.
- Get: an antler headpiece, torn fabric, a bark-brown cape, faux leaves.
- Cost for two: about £40 to £70 (estimate).
- Time: a weekend.
12. The turnip lantern and its carver
- The look: before pumpkins, carved turnips lit Halloween in Scotland and Ireland. One wears a papier-mâché turnip-lantern head; the other carries a card knife.
- Get: a balloon, newspaper, paste, paint and a battery LED.
- Cost for two: about £40 to £60 (estimate).
- Time: a weekend plus drying. LEDs only, never a candle.
Couples' fancy dress budgets compared, from £3 to £80
The table compares four routes to a couples' costume in the UK, with our cost estimates for two.
| Route | Cost for two (estimate) | Time to make | Main safety check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charity shop and DIY | £3 to £15 | 30 minutes to 4 hours | Wide eye holes; no straw or sheets near candles |
| High street and supermarket | £15 to £40 | 1 to 3 hours | Read the label and any "keep away from fire" warning |
| Online marketplace couples set | £20 to £50 | None, plus delivery | Check who the seller is |
| All-out build | £40 to £80 | A weekend | A mask you can see and breathe in; LEDs, not candles |
The cheapest route is also the most original: a charity-shop pairing rarely turns up twice at one party.
Is couples' fancy dress flammable? What 128 UK tests found
Children's costumes are regulated as toys in the UK; adult fancy dress is not. The Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 guidance covers toys intended for children under 14, with a CE or UKCA mark accepted in Great Britain.
When the Office for Product Safety and Standards tested 128 Halloween costumes for under-sevens in June 2024, 28 failed the BS EN 71-2:2020 flammability standard, 61 of 74 failed the drawstrings standard and 98 failed on labelling. All came from online marketplaces.
That scrutiny began in 2015, when the Business Secretary ordered nationwide Trading Standards spot checks after Claudia Winkleman's daughter was seriously burned when her costume caught fire.
For adults, nobody has put your costume through a toy flame test. OPSS's Halloween advice is to buy from a trusted seller, read the safety information and check for recalls. Add two rules: battery tealights in pumpkins, capes off near sparklers.
How to send the photo of you two: up to 6 pictures in one card
If one of you missed it, or you want to surprise your partner the morning after, the interactive Halloween card holds up to six photos. They knock three times on a little haunted house, carve a pumpkin until your word glows, wipe fog off portraits to find your pictures, then answer "Will you be my boo?".
It ends with a 1080×1920 Boo License sized for an Instagram Story, and its costume picker includes a vampire, skeleton and mummy, so a Dracula-and-Mina couple can match the licence to the night. You get an email the first time they answer.
For the whole camera roll, the premium Halloween page takes up to 12 photos and a 60-second voice note. 90.9% of SubhSandesh pages people start are published and shared.
When matching costumes are the wrong call
Three cases where a matched set, or our page, is wrong:
- One of you hates costumes. Give them one prop, the hunter's torch or the crow's beak, and let the other half carry the idea.
- The party is at a bonfire. Straw, sheets, capes and cardboard sit badly next to open flames on 5 November.
- You are in the same room. Show them the photo on your phone. The card is a one-person greeting page, not a party invitation, and its interface is English only.
Timing is the other trap. In our Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, the nearest analogue we have, 49.4% of rakhi pages were built on the festival day itself. That habit is fine for a card and fatal for a build. If you are still asking someone to be your fancy-dress partner, a date invitation page does the asking.
