Halloween Games for Adults, Sorted by the Party You're Hosting
Halloween games for adults work when they fit the room you actually have: a dinner table, an office, a 30-person house party, a small flat or a video call. Below are 20 clean games in 7 party formats, every one carded with player count, minutes, materials, win rule and an alcohol-free swap. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
Two first-party numbers shaped the list. In our nearest analogue, Raksha Bandhan 2026, 49.4% of SubhSandesh pages were built on the festival day itself (n = 89, a different occasion), so no game here needs over 15 minutes of prep. And 48.3% of pages shared through SubhSandesh are opened on a phone, so the virtual games assume phones, not laptops.
How does an adult Halloween game differ from a kids' one?
An adult Halloween party game is a structured activity with a clear win condition that guests can join sober or not, without becoming the joke. The party's format matters more than its theme: a seated dinner of 8 needs a different game from a standing crowd of 40.
Three rules apply throughout: nobody is forced to perform, and every drinking rule has a swap. Play deserves that care, since a 2013 study of 255 adults linked adult playfulness with higher life satisfaction.
Dinner-party games played at the table: 4 for 6 to 12 guests
These run between courses with only pens and card. Nobody leaves their seat.
1. Last Will and Testament
- 6–12 players · 15 min · cards, pens
- Play: will one object on the table to another guest, with a reason: "My dessert spoon, to Arjun, for the afterlife."
- Win: table vote. Alcohol-free: as written.
2. Napkin Monster Portraits
- 6–12 players · 10 min · napkins, pens
- Play: in 90 seconds, draw your left-hand neighbour's costume as a monster; never the face or body.
- Win: most napkins matched to sitters. Alcohol-free: as written.
3. Grave Rhymes
- 4–10 players · 10 min · nothing
- Play: rhyme with "tomb" within 5 seconds, or become a heckling ghost.
- Win: last poet standing. Alcohol-free: ghosts sip whatever they hold, water included.
4. Ghost at the Table
- 6–12 players · whole meal · folded cards, one marked "ghost"
- Play: unseen, the ghost moves a glass, says "chilly" and swaps two forks before dessert.
- Win: the ghost, if under half guess it. Alcohol-free: as written.
Murder-mystery lite: a 45-minute DIY structure
A boxed murder mystery game usually keeps guests in character all evening. This version needs one host, 8–16 guests and 45 minutes, and takes about 15 minutes to write.
5. The 45-Minute Whodunit
- 8–16 players in teams of 3–4 · 45 min · 3 suspect cards (one "guilty"), 6 clue envelopes
- Play:
- 0–5 min: the victim is a cardboard skeleton, Count Gerald; volunteers draw suspects.
- 5–20 min: envelopes 1–3, one per 5 minutes; only the guilty may lie, twice.
- 20–35 min: envelopes 4–6, one a red herring.
- 35–45 min: teams accuse, with a motive; the guilty one confesses.
- Win: first correct team. Alcohol-free: as written.
6. Alibi Pairs
- 6–20 players · 15 min · nothing
- Play: two volunteers agree an alibi outside, then face questions separately.
- Win: the room, if it finds 3 contradictions. Alcohol-free: as written.
Office-party-safe games: 3 with no drink, no dares, no costume
Office games must pass one test: fine if HR and a colleague who skips Halloween watched? Each fits a 30-minute lunch.
7. Monster CV
- 9–40 players in teams of 3 · 20 min · paper, pens
- Play: write a monster's job application, career gap included ("two centuries in a coffin").
- Win: applause vote. Alcohol-free: as written.
8. Pumpkin Cup Tower
- 6–40 players in teams · 10 min · 30 paper cups, one small pumpkin per team
- Play: build a freestanding tower in 4 minutes, then crown it with the pumpkin.
- Win: tallest standing tower. Alcohol-free: as written.
9. Six-Word Office Horror
- Any number, in teams · 15 min · sticky notes
- Play: write six-word horror stories set at work, such as:
- "The printer finished. Nobody pressed print."
- Win: secret ballot. Alcohol-free: as written.
Mingle games for 20 or more guests: 3 that run in the background
Mingle games run under the party, so anyone can join or drop out. Start them in the first 30 minutes.
10. Trade Up the Pumpkin
- 20–60 players · judged at 90 min · 10 mini pumpkins
- Play: ten guests trade up for better party items, always with someone new.
- Win: room vote. Alcohol-free: drinks can't be traded.
11. Spider Drop
- 20–80 players · whole party · 2 plastic spider rings per guest
- Play: leave spiders on sleeves or bags unseen; caught means take it back. Never hair or faces.
- Win: fewest spiders. Alcohol-free: as written.
12. Clipboard Census
- 20–60 players · 45 min · a clipboard and question each
- Play: poll 12 people on, say, "Which monster would survive a week in our town?"
- Win: strangest result, by applause. Alcohol-free: as written.
Games for introverts: 3 with no spotlight
Every entry is anonymous. The winner is decided on paper, not by performance.
13. Haunted Haiku
- 4–20 players · 20 min · cards, a box, sticker dots
- Play: post an unsigned 5-7-5 haiku, for example:
- "Porch light left on late / one small witch still knocking twice / the bowl holds three sweets"
- Win: most stickers. Alcohol-free: as written.
14. Cursed Curio Museum
- 6–30 players · 30 min · an ordinary object and placard each
- Play: shelve your object with an invented curse: "Spoon, c. 1994. Every soup it touches turns lukewarm."
- Win: most tally marks. Alcohol-free: as written.
15. Group Fear Ranking
- 6–20 players · 20 min · a ballot of 8 fears, from clowns to deep water
- Play: rank privately; teams predict the group's order.
- Win: a point per fear placed exactly. Alcohol-free: as written.
Indoor-only games for small apartments: 3 for a coffee table
A flat means one table and neighbours through the wall. The first two involve drink only if you choose.
16. Cauldron Pong
- 2–8 players · 20 min · 12 black cups, 2 ping-pong balls
- Play: six cups a side; a landed ball removes that cup.
- Win: clear their side first. Alcohol-free: cups hold wrapped sweets; drinkers sip, never spirits.
17. Flip-Cup Cauldron Relay
- 6–12 players in two teams · 15 min · a plastic cup each

- Play: everyone whispers; catch a full voice and take a sweet.
- Win: most sweets. Alcohol-free: as written.
Virtual games for remote friends: 2 that work on a phone
With 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages opened on a phone, assume half your call is on a small screen. Each needs only chat.
19. Anagram Chat Race
- 3–30 players · 15 min · 15 scrambled words
- Play: the first correct answer in chat scores, for example:
- "TRALENN" (lantern)
- "BEWBOC" (cobweb)
- Win: most points. Alcohol-free: as written.
20. Shared-Board Monster Sketch
- 3–12 players · 20 min · the call's whiteboard
- Play: draw a secret monster in 60 seconds while others guess in chat.
- Win: points to artist and first guesser. Alcohol-free: as written.
All 20 games compared by party format, players and minutes
Below, the 20 games are grouped by format. Minutes are per game.
| Party format | Games | Players | Minutes per game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dinner table and murder-mystery lite | 1–6 | 4–16 | 10–45, or the meal |
| Office and 20+ mingle | 7–12 | 6–80 | 10–45, or the party |
| Introverts and small apartments | 13–18 | 2–30 | 15–30 |
| Virtual, on a call | 19–20 | 3–30 | 15–20 |
Takeaway: crowds need a background mingle game. Tables of 8 suit the whodunit.
Responsible hosting: NIAAA's alcohol warning, dares and embarrassment
Drinking games make people drink fast, and the NIAAA guide to alcohol overdose (updated December 2025) warns that blood alcohol can keep rising after someone stops drinking. Make the alcohol-free version the default.
On consent: no dare involves touching, kissing, undressing or someone else's phone. Every dare gets a free pass, and nobody photographs a forfeit without asking.
Skip games where one guest becomes the joke, such as rating bodies, roasting or "most likely to" questions about real flaws. Solo turns in games 6 and 7 are for volunteers only.
A 2025 pilot in the Journal of Play in Adulthood gave 15 teachers and parents aged 28 to 58 a one-hour structured play programme and found large rises in positive affect and vitality straight after. It had no control group, so it suggests rather than proves.
A Halloween card for one person, with up to 6 photos, not for the party
Our interactive Halloween card is not a party tool: it can't invite a crowd, keep score or host anything above. It is a one-person greeting page, and a shared SubhSandesh page averages 11.1 views.
Send it to whoever missed the party. They knock three times on a little haunted house, carve a pumpkin until your word glows and read your letter by flashlight; you get an email when they first answer. For a midnight unlock, the premium Halloween page adds an optional unlock time, a voice note of up to 60 seconds and up to 12 photos.
When to skip structured games: 3 situations
A table of 4 old friends rarely needs structure. A crowd three hours into drinking won't follow a 45-minute mystery, so run it early.
The Halloween card falls short too. Its interface is English only, and a guest without a smartphone would rather get a handwritten note.
