- • Match the game to the slot: 3 games fit 15 minutes, 3 fit a 30-minute lunch, and 1 case-file game fills 60 minutes.
- • Six of the seven games need 20 minutes of prep or less, which matters when 49.4% of festival pages on SubhSandesh are built on the day itself (Raksha Bandhan 2026, n = 89).
- • A 2020 study of 491 retail staff found workplace fun only lowered turnover when it felt less managed, so keep games optional and light.
- • Give prizes as things, not gift cards: the IRS treats cash equivalents as never excludable, and HMRC's £50 trivial-benefit rule excludes cash vouchers.

Halloween Games for the Office, Timed for 15, 30 or 60 Minutes
The best Halloween games for the office are short, need no costume or alcohol, and give anyone who opts out a real job: a 15-minute poll before stand-up, a 30-minute puzzle at lunch, or a 60-minute case file on a Friday. Two habits shape the plan. In SubhSandesh's own festival data (Raksha Bandhan 2026, n = 89 pages, our nearest analogue), 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself, so most organisers work last-minute; six of these games need 20 minutes of prep or less. And 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so every remote version runs in a poll, chat or shared doc.
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, so most teams play on Friday 30 October 2026 or Friday 29 October 2027. Below: 7 original office Halloween games, remote versions, opt-out roles and EST prize budgets.
What is an office Halloween game?
An office Halloween game is a short, rule-based activity played in paid time, with colleagues who did not choose each other and may not celebrate Halloween. So it has to be optional, clean and finished before the next meeting.
A study of 491 hourly staff across 141 stores of one US retailer (Tews, Jolly and Stafford, Employee Relations, 2020) linked fun activities to lower turnover six months later only when staff saw the fun as less managed; when it felt contrived, the activities had no effect. Keep rules short and never take attendance.
15-minute Halloween games for a meeting slot
These replace the first quarter-hour of a stand-up or all-hands. Each needs one host, a timer and your usual poll tool.
1. Jargon Exorcism
- How it works: everyone nominates one phrase to banish, such as "circle back". A poll picks the winner, exorcised from meetings until 1 November; anyone who says it drops a sweet in the team jar.
- Remote version: nominations in a chat thread, final vote in the built-in poll.
- Opt-out role: the exorcist, who reads nominations aloud deadpan.
- Prep and prize: 2 minutes; the jar, up to $5 / £5 / ₹300 EST.
2. The Haunted Mug Line-up
- How it works: volunteers send the host a photo of their work mug. Everyone guesses owners of 8 numbered photos, one point per match.
- Remote version: a photo grid on one slide, guesses sent privately to the host so no wrong answer is public.
- Opt-out role: not sending a photo, and nobody sees who declined.
- Prep and prize: 10 minutes; $5 / £5 / ₹300 EST of sweets.
3. The Scariest Number in the Building
- How it works: the host collects 5 harmless real figures, such as coffee pods used in October, tickets older than 90 days, or the age in days of the oldest thing in the fridge. Teams guess; closest without going over scores.
- Remote version: figures from the ticket queue, guesses in a form.
- Opt-out role: the auditor, who checks and announces the real numbers.
- Prep and prize: 15 minutes; first pick of leftover sweets, no spend.
30-minute Halloween games for a lunch break
These fit a half-hour lunch with 5 minutes spare. Use teams of 3, mixed across departments.
4. The Haunted Org Chart
- How it works: each team gets a blank org chart for Graveyard Holdings Ltd, 6 monsters on 3 levels, and 8 logic clues, such as "The vampire reports to nobody who works days". The first correct chart wins.
- Remote version: breakout rooms of 3 with one shared slide; a broadcast hint at minute 15.
- Opt-out role: the auditor, who checks charts against the answer key.
- Prep and prize: 20 minutes to write and test the clues; $10–20 / £10–20 / ₹500–1,000 EST.
5. Cobweb Cleanup
- How it works: a 25-minute race to clear digital cobwebs: archive stale shared-drive files, close duplicate tickets, end dead recurring meetings. Each logged item earns a point; a "skeleton", untouched since last Halloween, earns 3.
- Remote version: identical; everyone works on their own screen.
- Opt-out role: the scorekeeper who spot-checks entries.
- Prep and prize: 5 minutes, plus each system owner's agreement on what may be archived. The winners pick next month’s meeting-free afternoon, no spend.
6. The Soul-Coin Auction
- How it works: each team of 3–5 gets 1,000 paper soul coins to bid on 8 sealed envelopes. Each holds a perk (first choice of desk next week, one skipped recurring meeting with the manager's sign-off) or a dud (a single candy corn), revealed at the end.
- Remote version: balances in a shared sheet, bids in chat.
- Opt-out role: the auctioneer, or the banker who tracks balances.
- Prep and prize: 15 minutes; most perks are non-cash, plus $10–15 / £10–15 / ₹500–800 EST of sweets.
A 60-minute office Halloween game, with a run sheet
One longer game suits a Friday afternoon. It doubles as the event.
7. The Kitchen Pumpkin Audit
- How it works: the office pumpkin has vanished. Teams of 3 get mock paperwork: a badge-swipe log, 6 chat screenshots, a calendar export, a cleaning rota and one receipt. Every name is a monster; one clue contradicts the obvious suspect. Teams submit who, when and why.
- Remote version: the pack as shared PDFs, breakout rooms, answers through a timestamped form.
- Opt-out role: the auditor general, who reads evidence aloud on request and marks answers.
- Prep and prize: 60–90 minutes to write; $20–40 / £20–40 / ₹1,000–2,500 EST.
Run sheet: minutes 0–5 brief; 5–40 investigate, with hints at 20 and 30; 40–50 submit and reveal; 50–60 prizes and one round of Jargon Exorcism. Bingo, scavenger hunts, charades and Pictionary have their own guides, so they are left out.
Office Halloween games compared by slot, prep and prize budget
The table groups the 7 games by slot. Prize figures are estimates, not quotes.
| Slot | Games | Host prep | Remote format | Prize budget (EST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 1, 2, 3 | 2–15 min | Poll, chat, form | up to $5 / £5 / ₹300 |
| 30 minutes | 4, 5, 6 | 5–20 min | Breakout rooms of 3, shared sheet | $10–20 / £10–20 / ₹500–1,000 |
| 60 minutes | 7 | 60–90 min | Shared PDFs, timed form | $20–40 / £20–40 / ₹1,000–2,500 |
| Fully remote team | 1, 3, 5 | 2–15 min | Runs on a phone | up to $5 / £5 / ₹300 |
Give prizes as things, not gift cards. The IRS de minimis fringe benefits guidance says cash and cash-equivalent items are never excludable in the US. In the UK, HMRC's trivial benefits rule only exempts a benefit costing £50 or less that is not cash, a cash voucher, or a reward for work or performance. Elsewhere, ask payroll first.
Remote and hybrid versions that do not leave half the team watching
Hybrid games fail when the room plays and the screen watches. Give everyone their own device, keep scores in one shared sheet, and mix teams across locations.
Remote teams invent their own rituals. An ethnographic study of one software team working from home in the pandemic (Santos and Ralph, 2022 preprint) recorded 3 practices it created, a costume meeting, a second-language day and a project happy hour, which appeared to raise involvement, improve cohesion and reduce monotony. Borrow the idea and make the happy hour alcohol-free.
In a survey of 506 mostly Brazilian workers (da Silva-Guimaraes et al., 2025), psychological safety, the sense that interpersonal risk is safe, averaged 5.56 for remote workers against 5.00 in person. It is one cross-sectional study, but it supports giving remote colleagues the host and auditor roles. Design for small screens too: with 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages opened on a phone, a tiny-text PDF loses half your remote players.
Opt-outs that do not single anyone out
Not everyone celebrates Halloween: some colleagues avoid it for religious reasons, some for cultural ones, some dislike horror. The US EEOC's religious discrimination guidance states that an employee cannot be forced to participate in a religious activity as a condition of employment, and that employers may need to accommodate religious beliefs short of undue hardship.
A game is not a religious activity, but the same design works. Five rules:
- Mark the invite optional and say no reason is needed to decline.
- Give every game a non-playing role, and let people decline that too.
- Never require or score a costume.
- No alcohol-centred games or drinking forfeits; finish before any bar opens.
- No gore, jump scares or real names in puzzle material.
Keep it in working hours. The 2020 retail study found contrived fun did nothing for retention, and an after-hours game people feel obliged to attend is the most contrived kind.
When office Halloween games are the wrong call
Skip games during a quarter close, a launch week, or after layoffs or a bereavement. If 2 or 3 people have quietly said they would rather not, a bowl of sweets does the job.
SubhSandesh is the wrong tool for the games themselves. Our Halloween pages are one-person greeting pages: they cannot run a poll, keep score or invite a department. Use one to thank a single colleague, such as the organiser.
The interactive Halloween card for one colleague takes about 5 minutes and holds up to 6 photos and a letter read by flashlight; choose bestie mode and edit the default "Will you be my boo?" question (up to 60 characters) so it reads as thanks. For a remote teammate, the premium Halloween page with a 60-second voice note takes about 10 minutes, holds up to 12 photos, can unlock at a set time and has one reply box. 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators add a password before sharing, wise on a work network. If Halloween is not their thing, browse the full template list for a plain thank-you.
