- • Size a Halloween garland to its spot: about 1.5 times the mantel width for one swag and 1.25 times the handrail length for a banister (rules of thumb).
- • Almost every DIY garland here weighs under 1 kg (2.2 lb), so the fixing fails before the strand does; 3M rates its medium wire hook at 2 lb and its large hook at 5 lb.
- • Removable hooks need 1 hour before loading and 7 days on fresh paint, and are not for wallpaper.
- • Extra-low-voltage (12–24 V) LED lights are the safest choice near fabric, paper and dried fruit; outdoors, look for an IP code ending in 3 or higher.
- • Real candles do not belong beside a garland; London Fire Brigade recommends flameless LED candles instead.

Halloween Garland Ideas: 11 Strands Sized for Every Spot
The best Halloween garland ideas start with the spot, not the craft: a mantel swag needs about 1.5 times the mantel's width, a banister about 1.25 times the rail, and every strand needs a hook rated above its weight. Below are 11 DIY Halloween garland ideas grouped by mantel, staircase, window, doorway, tree and bunting, each with an estimated weight, build time and cost.
Start earlier than instinct says. SubhSandesh has no Halloween data, but on Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we measured (a small sample of 89 pages), 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself, and a removable hook needs an hour before it takes weight. Photograph the finished line in portrait, too: 48.3% of the pages shared on SubhSandesh are opened on a phone.
Below: sizing, the 11 strands, a comparison table, damage-free hanging, light and candle safety, and when a garland is wrong. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
What is a Halloween garland, and how long should it be?
A Halloween garland is any decoration strung along a line, such as a cord, ribbon or wire, and hung across or along a surface. Bunting is the flat, pennant version; a swag is a garland that dips between two fixing points.
Length is where most garlands go wrong: a strand that looks generous in the shop pulls tight on the wall. These rules of thumb are estimates, not measured data, but they keep the dip looking intentional:
- Straight runs (window top, door lintel): span plus 15 cm (6 in) at each end for tie-off.
- One mantel swag: 1.5 times the mantel width. Two swags: 2 times.
- Banister: 1.25 times the handrail length, looped at every third or fourth spindle.
- Vertical drops (window, doorway): the drop height plus 20 cm (8 in) for the knot at the top.
11 Halloween garland ideas by where they hang
Each idea lists the same four fields: what it is, the best spot, an estimated weight, and estimated time and materials cost in US dollars. The weight decides which hook you need.
1. Blood-orange and jet-bead mantel strand

- Time, cost (EST): 1.5 hours; US$12–18.
Halloween garland ideas compared: length, weight and hook by spot
The table turns the sizing rules into a shopping list by spot. Lengths and weights are estimates; the fixing column uses 3M's published hook capacities.
| Spot | Length to buy (EST) | Weight of a typical strand (EST) | Fixing that holds it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mantel, 1.2 m (4 ft) wide | 1.8 m (6 ft) | 80–300 g | 2 hooks rated 1.4 kg (3 lb) each, or weighted mantel clips if the fire is lit |
| Staircase, 3 m (10 ft) rail | 3.75 m (12 ft) | 250–700 g | Ties to spindles; no adhesive |
| Window, 1.2 m (4 ft) | 1.5 m (5 ft) or six drops | 30–200 g | Clear hooks rated 0.9 kg (2 lb) |
| Doorway, 0.9 m (3 ft) | 1.2 m (4 ft) | 200–300 g | Tension rod or 2 hooks rated 1.4 kg (3 lb) |
| Outdoor rail or tree | 3–5 m (10–16 ft) | 250 g–1 kg | Zip ties; outdoor-rated hooks only on smooth surfaces |
Almost every Halloween garland here weighs under 1 kg (2.2 lb). The weak point is the fixing, not the strand.
How to hang a garland without damaging walls
Wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol rather than household cleaner, press for 30 seconds, and wait 1 hour before hanging anything. The same page says to wait 7 days after painting, not to use the hooks on wallpaper, and that indoor hooks are rated for 50°F to 105°F (10–40°C) while outdoor hooks with blue liners cover -20°F to 125°F.
Command's weight-limit guide lists the medium wire hook at 2 lb and the large hook at 5 lb, and a swag pulls sideways as well as down, so split the load across two or three hooks. Remove each one by stretching the tab straight down along the wall, never towards you, for at least 12 inches (30 cm).
The ladder is a bigger risk than the wall. In the Robert Koch Institute's 2024 accident panel of 26,923 German adults, 36.0% of accidents needing treatment happened at home and falls were the most common cause at 30.4%, with "from a ladder" named as an example of a fall from height. Use a stepladder above shoulder height, never a chair, and have someone hand the strand up.
String lights and candles near a garland: what is safe
Lights put heat and current next to paper, felt and dried fruit. UK charity Electrical Safety First says the safest Christmas-style lights run at extra-low voltage, typically 12–24 volts, and that LEDs use much less power and run cooler than filament bulbs. Four more of its rules matter for garlands:
- Outdoors, use only sets marked with a water-drop symbol or an IP code whose last digit is 3 or higher.
- Keep the plug and transformer indoors even when the lights are rated for outside.
- Do not join different lighting sets together, and keep lights well away from flammable decorations.
- Switch off and unplug before bed or before going out.
London Fire Brigade advises that candles should never be left unattended and never sit close to anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, papers and clothes, and recommends flameless LED candles as the safer alternative. Next to lace or dried fruit on a mantel, that means battery candles only, including on 31 October.
When a garland is the wrong choice, and who it cannot reach
A garland is the wrong project in four cases: wallpapered or textured walls, which removable hooks are not recommended for; a cat that chews string or fishing line; a rental where the only anchor points are fragile plaster; and a staircase that elderly relatives will grip on the day. A decorated table does the job with less risk.
A garland also cannot reach someone in another city. For that one person, the Halloween card with a haunted house they walk through takes about 5 minutes, holds up to six photos and lets them carve your word into a jack-o'-lantern. The premium Halloween page with your voice note takes about 10 minutes and adds a voice note of up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos, an optional unlock time and a reply box.
Both are one-person greeting pages, not party tools. Across SubhSandesh, a shared page averages 11.1 views. If Halloween is not the right occasion, browse every SubhSandesh template instead.
