Halloween Hairstyles: 28 Looks by Hair Length, Time and Skill
The quickest Halloween hairstyles need five minutes and a pack of clips; a witch braid crown or spider-web braid needs 25 to 30 minutes and a helper. Here are 28 halloween hair ideas grouped by hair length, curly and coily texture, kids and five-minute fixes, each with time, skill (1 to 3), tools, hair type and estimated accessory cost.
Photograph the result vertically for anyone who missed it: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of page views come from phones and a page is opened 11.1 times on average (all pages, measured 2026-09-24; we hold no Halloween data). We also cover colour safety, with test dates for Halloween 2026 (Saturday) and 2027 (Sunday), and fake hair near candles.
What turns a hairstyle into a Halloween costume?
A Halloween hairstyle is a shape, colour or accessory that tells a stranger who you are before they see your outfit. The test: if someone three metres away can name the character from your head alone, it works.
Of the 28 styles below, 9 take five minutes or less and 6 are complete costumes on their own. Skill 1 means anyone can do it, skill 2 needs a basic braid or bun, and skill 3 needs Dutch braiding or confident backcombing.

Halloween hairstyles compared by hair length
One example per group, side by side. Match time and skill to the hour you actually have.
| Hair length | Style example | Time | Skill (1–3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short | Bat-clip pixie | 5 min | 1 |
| Medium | Medusa twist-and-pin | 25 min | 2 |
| Long | Witch braid crown | 25 min | 3 |
| Curly or coily | Orange-and-black Bantu knots | 45 min | 2 |
| Kids | Googly-eye pigtails | 5 min | 1 |
Hair length matters less than skill. A skill 1 style in any length is ready in ten minutes or less.
Is temporary Halloween hair colour safe?
Sprays and chalks sit on the surface, but semi-permanent dyes can carry the allergen behind most dye reactions. In a Dutch study of 70,897 adults, 63.1% had used hair dye and 6.8% of those users reported a skin reaction to it (Rosenberg et al., 2025).
The NHS says many permanent and some semi-permanent dyes contain PPD (paraphenylenediamine), that a past black henna tattoo raises the risk, and that symptoms can take up to 72 hours to appear. It advises testing at least 48 hours ahead: for a Saturday 31 October 2026 party, test by Thursday 29 October; in 2027, by Friday 29 October.
The FDA asks for a skin test before every use, not just the first, and warns that dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes can cause blindness. It also says to wait 14 days after bleaching, relaxing or perming.
Bleached or very light hair is porous, so blue, green and purple pigment can outlast one wash. Strand-test a hidden section on that timetable and shampoo it once.
Accessories count too. A 2024 review names PPD the most common scalp allergen in several studies and flags nickel in hair clasps, hairpins and brushes as another (Hwang et al.). If metal clips have ever itched, use plastic ones for the clip looks.
Hairspray, fake hair and candles: the fire rule
Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service says to keep flowing items like fake hair and capes away from candle and other flames and to light pumpkins with LED battery lights. It adds that UK fancy dress is regulated as a toy, not clothing.
That covers wigs, raffia, tulle veils and craft cobweb. Aerosol hairspray has its own label warning: read the can, let it dry before going near a candle, and teach children stop, drop and roll.
Show your Halloween hair to someone who stayed home
A hair photo dropped into a busy group chat is buried by morning. Our interactive Halloween card hides your six best shots behind fogged portraits the recipient wipes clear, lets them carve a pumpkin and read your letter by flashlight, then hands them a Boo License sized for an Instagram Story. Pick partner, bestie, family or kids mode to match who it is for.
Want them to hear you explain the spider-web braid? The premium Halloween page takes a 60-second voice note and 12 photos. Most people who start a SubhSandesh page finish it: 90.9% are published (all pages, 2026-09-24).
When to skip the colour, the wig or our card
Skip colour if your scalp is sunburned, broken or itchy, if the 48-hour test left redness, or if you have reacted to dye or black henna before. A skill 1 shape carries no dye risk, and tulle, raffia or a wig is a poor match for candles at head height.
Our card loses whenever they are standing next to you; just turn your head. It speaks to a single person rather than inviting a crowd, its screens are in English, and it will not style, colour or sell you anything.
