- • Instagram has allowed only 5 hashtags per post or reel since its @creators account announced the cap in December 2025.
- • Threads uses one topic tag per post, a feature Adam Mosseri announced was rolling out globally on 7 December 2023.
- • TikTok has been blocked in India since 29 June 2020, so Indian readers' Halloween tags belong on Instagram or Threads.
- • This page prints no hashtag post counts: Instagram's tag page required a login when checked on 13 October 2026.
- • For a photo meant for one person, skip the tag: 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page before sharing.

Halloween Hashtags for Instagram, Threads and TikTok, by Use
The Halloween hashtags worth using are a short, specific set: one broad tag, one or two for what is in the photo, and one for the mood or place. Never use more than five, because Instagram has allowed only five hashtags per post or reel since December 2025. Below are 60 tags already packed into twelve five-tag sets, so each one pastes straight into a caption.
A hashtag makes a post findable by strangers, yet on SubhSandesh 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it, and 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, so plenty of people want the opposite of reach. This page covers each platform's hashtag rules with the date we checked them, the sets, a comparison table, and when to skip the hashtag entirely. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
What does a Halloween hashtag actually do?
A Halloween hashtag is a word or phrase after a # symbol that the platform turns into a tap-through link, grouping your post with others carrying the same tag. It works as a label for search and recommendation, not as a promise that anyone will see the post.
Media researcher Tim Highfield, writing in First Monday in September 2018, noted that what shows up as a hashtag on one platform will not necessarily be recognised as one on another. His example was emoji: Instagram began supporting emoji hashtags in 2015, so a tag like #Halloween🎃 became clickable there, while Twitter at the time did not support emoji tags at all. So write one set per platform, and treat each rule below as a dated fact that can change.
Halloween hashtag rules by platform, checked 13 October 2026
Instagram: five hashtags per post or reel
Instagram's official @creators account announced on Threads in December 2025: "Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post." Several Halloween lists ranking on Google in October 2026 still recommend 20 or more tags per post, advice that no longer fits in an Instagram caption.
We also tried to read live post counts for #halloween on 13 October 2026. Instagram's tag page sent us to a login screen, so this page prints no post counts; treat any undated count elsewhere as stale.
Threads: one topic tag per post
Threads does not use classic hashtag stacks. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced on 7 December 2023 that the ability to tag a topic on a post was rolling out globally, so people could categorise posts and others could find the conversation. Social Media Today reported on 18 December 2025 that Threads limits these tags to one per post.
So pick the one topic that names the conversation, such as Halloween Costumes. Put the costume, place and mood in the sentence itself.
TikTok: blocked in India since 29 June 2020
For readers in India, TikTok hashtags are moot. The Ministry of Electronics and IT blocked 59 apps on 29 June 2020, with TikTok first on the list, and tiktok.com still showed that notice to an Indian connection on 13 October 2026.
Elsewhere, TikTok's own hashtag help page returned a server error when we checked on 13 October 2026, so we make no claim about a TikTok tag limit. Posting from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, trust what the caption screen allows on the day.
X: no verified limit, so none given
X's hashtag help page returned a bot check (HTTP 403) on 13 October 2026, and we do not work around those. The one dated fact we can give comes from Highfield's 2018 study: Twitter turned any unbroken string of letters and numbers after a # into a search link, and attached branded emoji, called hashflags, only to tags it chose.
60 Halloween hashtags in twelve five-tag sets, by use
Each set has the same shape: one broad anchor tag, three specific tags, then one local or personal slot. The 48 specific tags were written for this page, so some will have few posts yet, which is fine for a personal photo.
1. Costume reveal
- #Halloween
- #CostumeReveal
- #DIYCostumeWin
- #ThriftedCostume
- #[YourCity]Costume
Best for one full-length photo or a before-and-after reel. Swap #ThriftedCostume for #LastMinuteCostume if you built it on 30 October.
2. Couple costume
- #HappyHalloween
- #TwoPartCostume
- #MatchingMonsters
- #OurCostumeCollab
- #BooAndBae
Best for a photo where the costume only makes sense with both of you in frame. Drop #BooAndBae if either of you would cringe at it later.
3. Group and squad costume
- #HalloweenNight
- #SquadCostume
- #GroupCostumeCrew
- #CostumeCrewPhoto
- #[NumberOf]GhostsOneCar
Best for a group shot of four or more. Ask everyone before tagging, since a tag makes their faces public too.
4. Kids and trick-or-treat
- #TrickOrTreat
- #FirstTrickOrTreat
- #LittlePumpkinPatrol
- #CandyCountCheck
- #TrickOrTreatRoute
Best for a back-of-the-head or masked shot on the walk. Never add a school, street or estate name to a child's photo; the fifth slot here is deliberately not a place.
5. Pets in costume
- #HalloweenCostume
- #PetInCostume
- #DogsInCapes
- #CatWitchEnergy
- #TreatsForPaws
Best for a costume your pet tolerated for one photo, not a whole evening. With a cat, cut #DogsInCapes and keep #CatWitchEnergy; with a dog, do the reverse.
6. Pumpkin carving
- #JackOLantern
- #PumpkinCarvingNight
- #JackOLanternGlow
- #CarvedNotPainted
- #PumpkinGutsEverywhere
Best for a lit pumpkin shot in the dark. Use #CarvedNotPainted only if you actually carved it.
7. Porch and home decor
- #HalloweenDecor
- #SpookyPorch
- #FrontStepFright
- #CobwebCorner
- #HauntedHallway
Best for a wide shot of a doorway, hallway or balcony. Leave your house number out of the frame if the account is public.
8. Baking and food
- #HalloweenTreats
- #MonsterCupcakes
- #GhostToast
- #CauldronSoup
- #PumpkinPieNight
Best for a top-down photo of one dish rather than a whole table. Cut any tag that does not match what is on the plate.
9. Makeup and face paint
- #HalloweenMakeup
- #FacePaintLook
- #SFXMakeupTry
- #CreepyCuteMakeup
- #SkeletonSmile
Best for a close-up in daylight. Name any brand in the caption, not a tag.
10. Horror movie night
- #HorrorMovies
- #HorrorMovieNight
- #ScreamOnTheSofa
- #PopcornAndPoltergeists
- #BlanketFortFrights
Best for a sofa-and-screen photo on the night itself. Name the film in the caption so people searching for it can find you.
11. UK fancy dress and Bonfire week
- #HalloweenParty
- #HalloweenFancyDress
- #BonfireWeek
- #FancyDressAndFireworks
- #[YourTown]FancyDress
Best for UK posts between 31 October and Bonfire Night, which is Thursday 5 November 2026 and Friday 5 November 2027. Swap #BonfireWeek out after the 5th.
12. Halloween parties in India
- #October31
- #HalloweenInIndia
- #DesiHalloween
- #SareeWitch
- #[City]HalloweenParty
Best for a house party or college event in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi or Pune. Replace #SareeWitch with whatever the desi twist on your costume actually was.
Halloween hashtag limits compared: Instagram, Threads, TikTok and X
The table compares what each platform allowed when we checked, the official or dated source, and what we could not verify, with a private page as the fifth row.
| Platform | Tags per post | Source and date | Status on 13 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 per post or reel | @creators on Threads, Dec 2025 | Tag pages need login; no counts readable | |
| Threads | 1 topic tag | Mosseri, 7 Dec 2023; Social Media Today, 18 Dec 2025 | Rule as reported |
| TikTok | Not verified | MeitY via PIB, 29 Jun 2020 | Blocked in India; help page error |
| X | Not verified | Highfield, First Monday, Sep 2018 | Help page bot check (403) |
| SubhSandesh Halloween page | 0 tags, private link | Template spec, 13 Oct 2026 | 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators add a password |
Five is the only hard number you can rely on, and only for Instagram. Everywhere else, write the caption first and treat tags as optional.
How to build your own five-tag Halloween set
Fewer tags each carry more weight, at least in one research model. A 2023 study from IIT Indore in Social Network Analysis and Mining built its hashtag recommender on the principle that the more hashtags a post carries, the less any single one contributes to its popularity; their method beat the previous best by 3.5%. That was a model trained on Twitter posts, not an Instagram experiment, so read it as a direction rather than a rule.
- One anchor. Pick one broad tag people already search, such as #Halloween or #HalloweenCostume, and only one.
- Two or three subject tags. Name what is literally in the photo: the costume, the pumpkin, the dog, the dish. A tag that describes something not in the frame earns you the wrong viewers.
- One mood or place tag. Add your town or a feeling, never your street, and skip the place tag entirely on children's photos.
When a hashtag is the wrong choice
A hashtag is built for strangers, so it is the wrong tool when your Halloween photo is really meant for one person. On SubhSandesh, 38.5% of creators password-protect their page, and a page gets 11.1 views on average, counted as views rather than unique visitors, which is what one person reopening something looks like.
If the photo is for a partner, best friend, parent or child, send it instead of tagging it. The interactive Halloween card with photos and music takes about five minutes, holds up to six photos and a letter, and ends with a Boo License sized 1080×1920 for an Instagram Story, so they can choose to post it themselves. The cinematic Halloween page with a voice note takes about ten minutes, holds up to 12 photos and a 60-second voice note, can stay locked until a time you set, and has a reply box for their answer.
Both are one-person pages in English, not party tools, and they will not grow an account. If your person skips Halloween, the full SubhSandesh template gallery covers other occasions.
