Halloween Ideas for Teachers: 26 Lessons by Subject and Grade
Good Halloween ideas for teachers are ordinary curriculum lessons in an October costume: a pumpkin that floats, a jar of plastic spiders to estimate, a Poe poem by torchlight. Below are 26, each tagged with grade band (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12), minutes, prep and standard area.
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, so many schools mark it on Friday 30 October 2026 or Friday 29 October 2027. For the one colleague who carried you through October, a personal card page beats a class party: 90.9% of pages started on SubhSandesh are published and shared, and 48.3% are opened on a phone. Inclusion, costume and allergy rules follow.
When is a Halloween lesson worth class time?
A Halloween lesson earns its place when it teaches a lesson you already owed the class. The theme buys attention; the standard justifies the time.
The evidence favours play an adult steers. A 2022 Child Development meta-analysis by Skene and colleagues at the University of Cambridge (open access on Europe PMC) pooled 17 studies covering 3,893 children aged 1 to 8. Guided play beat direct instruction on early maths skills (g = 0.24) and shape knowledge (g = 0.63).
Every child studied was under 9, and half the papers had fewer than 50 participants. Read it as support for guided maths in K–2, not proof that teenagers learn more in costume.
26 Halloween classroom activities by subject and grade band
Each entry reads: grade band · minutes · prep · standard area. Standard areas are generic, so map them to your own curriculum.
Maths: 5 activities for estimation, data and measurement
- Seed bundles of ten (K–2 · 40 min · a pumpkin per table, paper cups · place value). Guess the seed count, bundle in tens, count cups.
- Spider-jar benchmark (3–5 · 20 min · two identical jars, plastic spiders · estimation). One jar holds 10; estimate the full jar.
- Spider-leg arrays (3–5 · 25 min · squared paper · multiplication). Draw 3, 6 and 9 spiders as arrays for the 8-times table.
- Is the fun-size bag fair? (6–8 · 45 min · a table you count at home · statistics). Pieces in 12 bags of one brand; find mean, median and range. No sweets reach the room.
- Sphere or not? (9–12 · 50 min · pumpkin, tape measure, water bucket · geometric modelling). Predict volume from circumference as a sphere, check by displacement, explain the error.
Literacy: 5 activities for writing and public-domain read-alouds
- One-line story starters (3–5 · 30 min · the lines below · narrative writing). Pick one, write 150 words, end somewhere safe.
- "The class hamster had been missing since Tuesday, and now the lost-property box was humming."
- "Every year the school bell rang once at midnight, and this year someone answered it."
- "The pumpkin on the reception desk grew a new tooth every morning."
- Six-word scary stories (9–12 · 20 min · none · word choice). Draft ten, keep one, defend every word.
- "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" (K–2 · 15 min · Edward Lear's 1871 poem · listening and rhyme). Read twice; children clap the rhymes.
- "The Cask of Amontillado" (6–8 · 40 min · Poe's 1846 story · inference). Stop before the last paragraph and ask why Montresor tells this now.
- "The Raven" sound hunt (9–12 · 45 min · Poe's 1845 poem · poetic devices). Mark internal rhyme and alliteration; track how "nevermore" shifts meaning.
Science: 4 activities with water, scales and bones
- Float or sink? (K–2 · 30 min · small and large pumpkins, water tub · properties of materials). Predict, test, then try an apple. Pumpkins usually float.
- Pumpkin density (6–8 · 45 min · kitchen scale, bucket, measuring jug · density). Mass ÷ displaced volume; compare two varieties.
- Decomposer tub (3–5 · 10 min weekly for 4 weeks · pumpkin slice in a taped clear tub · decomposers). Sketch weekly; bin it unopened, since mould spores trouble allergic children.
- Bat wing, human hand (3–5 · 30 min · printed skeleton diagrams · structure and function). Match bat finger bones to your own.
Social studies: 4 activities on Día de los Muertos and harvest festivals
- Día de los Muertos, explained not costumed (3–8 · 40 min · UNESCO's description · cultures and traditions). UNESCO added Mexico's indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead to its intangible heritage list in 2008. Teach it as remembrance around 1–2 November, and let families from the tradition share if they wish.
- Harvest festivals map (3–5 · 45 min · world map, festival cards · geography). Pin Sukkot, Chuseok, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Pongal, Homowo and Thanksgiving; sort by crop and season.
- Upside-down October (3–5 · 20 min · globe, torch · seasons). October is spring in Sydney and Buenos Aires; explain why.
- Three dates, one week (9–12 · 40 min · blank timeline · chronology). Place Halloween (31 October), All Saints' Day (1 November) and Bonfire Night (5 November); label each religious, political or commercial.
Art: 4 activities on symmetry, value and light
- Fold-print monsters (K–2 · 20 min · paint, paper · symmetry). Paint one half, fold, open, name it.
- Orange value scale (3–5 · 30 min · orange, white and black paint · tints and shades). Mix seven steps, paint a pumpkin in three.
- Notan bats (6–8 · 45 min · black and white paper · positive and negative space). Cut from one edge and flip each piece out.
- Side-lit pumpkin study (9–12 · 50 min · LED tea light, charcoal · value and light). Light a pumpkin from one side; draw the shadow.
SEL: 2 activities for naming fears
- Feelings faces (K–2 · 15 min · paper pumpkins · emotion vocabulary). Draw "surprised", "nervous" and "excited", then point to today's feeling.
- Spooky scale of 1 to 5 (3–5 · 20 min · private cards · self-awareness). Rate ten spooky things privately, then see the class spread. Nobody shares their own card.
ESL vocabulary: 2 activities
- Twelve-word picture sort (K–5 beginners · 20 min · picture cards · core vocabulary). Sort pumpkin, lantern, mask, bat, owl, cobweb, candle, harvest, scarecrow, broom, cauldron and costume: real or pretend?
- Idiom match (6–12 · 25 min · idiom cards · figurative language). Match "jumped out of my skin", "my hair stood on end" and "gave me goosebumps" to plain meanings.
One lesson per grade band: 4 picks compared
Got one free lesson? These four need the least prep.
| Subject | Grade band | Activity | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science | K–2 | Float or sink? (#11) | 30 |
| Maths | 3–5 | Spider-jar benchmark (#2) | 20 |
| Literacy | 6–8 | "The Cask of Amontillado" (#9) | 40 |
| Maths | 9–12 | Sphere or not? (#5) | 50 |
Short and hands-on suits K–2. The 9–12 pick ties the theme to an assessed skill.
A 45-minute classroom Halloween party plan
Run four 10-minute stations plus 5 minutes to tidy and reveal the jar count, groups of 5 to 7 rotating. Every station reuses a lesson above.
- Estimation: the spider jar (#2), guesses on sticky notes.
- Art: fold-print monsters (#19), or notan bats (#21) for older classes.
- Story: one starter (#6) read by torchlight, then a group ending.
- Thank-you cards: each child writes to one staff member, such as the caretaker.
Prizes are non-food: stickers, pencils, bookmarks. Serve food only if your school allows it, sealed and labelled.
Inclusion: families who don't celebrate, costumes and allergies
Every child should be able to join in without a costume, a sweet or belief in the holiday. Plan the harvest version of each activity first, then add the Halloween layer.
Auten Road Intermediate School in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, sends a Fall Fest letter to families that ends the day with 25 minutes of fall-themed educational activities. Students can join in with a funny hat, a themed T-shirt or orange and black.
Butler Middle School's costume guidelines, in Utah's Canyons School District, ban full-face masks and full-face paint, weapons real or fake, and costumes that stereotype a culture, gender, heritage or religion. Dressing up is optional.
Food rules diverge most. Food allergy affects 7–8% of children worldwide, notes a 2023 study of 16 Winnipeg elementary teachers, who described inconsistent enforcement of allergy policies between and within schools. Check this year's rule with the office; Auten Road's staff hand out no food or candy at all.
Costumes you can teach in all day: 4 rules and 4 ideas
A teaching costume must survive six lessons, a duty and a fire drill. Office and team costumes are a separate topic, covered in our work-costume guide. Four rules first, then four ideas that pass them.
- Face visible. Both schools above ban student masks; lip-readers and ESL learners need your mouth too.
- Arms free to write above shoulder height.
- Flat shoes for playground duty.
- Off in 30 seconds for a drill.
- Weather forecaster: blazer, felt sun and cloud badges, a map pointer.
- Library book: cardigan with a pinned card pocket, stamped due 31 October.
- Human calendar: white top with a large October page, the 31st circled.
- Gold star: yellow top with a big felt star, stickers to award all day.
One colleague, one Halloween card: where it fits
The colleague who swapped your duty deserves something personal. The interactive Halloween card with photos is a one-person page: they knock three times, carve a jack-o'-lantern until your word glows, wipe fog off up to six photos and read your letter by flashlight.
Edit the closing question (up to 60 characters) to "Will you be my lunch-duty boo forever?" and pick bestie mode; you get an email when they first answer. Kids mode greets one child, so never send it to a class list.
The Halloween page with a 60-second voice note adds up to 12 photos and a reply box. Skip both if you would need student photos, your district restricts staff messaging, or the colleague doesn't celebrate. The pages are English only, and 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page, sensible if photos show the staffroom.
