Halloween Instagram Notes: 63 Lines That Fit in 60 Characters
Halloween Instagram notes have to fit in 60 characters, so each of the 63 original notes below has been counted. Instagram's Help Centre (checked 13 Oct 2026) says a note shows at the top of the inbox and above your profile picture for up to 24 hours, to followers you follow back or your Close friends.
Notes live on phones, and 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on one too. Notes are also semi-private, and 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators lock their page with a password before sending it, the same instinct as choosing Close friends. Below: the rules, seven groups of notes, a format table and the limits.
What is an Instagram Note, and what are the rules?
An Instagram Note is a short text post of up to 60 characters that sits above your profile picture in the inbox and on your profile. It lasts up to 24 hours, one note at a time.
Per Instagram's Share a note help page, checked 13 October 2026, a new note replaces your current one and you can delete it any time. Only you see who liked or replied, and each reply opens a private chat with that person.
Two smaller rules matter. Notes with GIFs or videos do not appear on your profile, and a Close friends note reaches only Close friends who follow you back.
Music works differently. Instagram's Spotify note page says a linked note shows what you are playing in real time, for up to 24 hours or until 30 minutes after you stop. A new text note replaces it.
63 Halloween Instagram notes, grouped by what you want back
Every line below is 60 characters or fewer, counting spaces and punctuation, with no emoji. Instagram does not say how it counts emoji, so add them last and recheck.
1. Countdown to Halloween notes
Because Halloween lands on 31 October annually, countdown notes work from mid-October. Post one daily and the bubble becomes a running joke.
- 10 days to Halloween and my costume is still a bedsheet.
- One week until 31 October. Pumpkin status: uncarved.
- Five sleeps till Halloween. Witch hat already on.
- Halloween in 3 days. Fake cobwebs: everywhere. Plan: none.
- Two days left to decide: vampire or very tired vampire.
- Tomorrow is Halloween and I have bought 4 bags of sweets.
- It's 31 October. Doorbell on, lights low, bowl full.
- October countdown: day 24 of pretending I'm not scared.
- 1 day to go. The skeleton on my balcony is ready.
2. Mood and vibe notes
A mood note describes your evening without a photo. Keep it to one image, because 60 characters will not hold two.
- Candle lit, blanket on, horror film paused at the scary bit.
- Currently: pumpkin soup and a suspicious creaky floor.
- Soft spooky mode. Do not disturb unless it's a ghost.
- Main character energy, but the main character is a bat.
- Black nail polish drying, opinions forming.
- Autumn leaves outside, fake spiders inside.
- Lights off, torch under chin, storytime at 9.
- Feeling haunted, in a cosy way.
- Crisp air, orange lights, zero plans after dark.
3. Question notes that start a DM
A question gives followers an easy reason to answer, and every reply arrives as a private message. In a 2019 AoIR study of 400+ Instagram stories from Sydney's Mardi Gras festival, preliminary findings say the "ask me a question" feature afforded direct communication with audiences.
- Costume ideas on a tiny budget? Reply, I'm desperate.
- Scariest film you've actually finished? Reply.
- Sweet or savoury trick-or-treat haul? Settle this.
- Best thing you ever dressed up as? Tell me.
- Pumpkin carving tips? My last one looked worried.
- Who's free on the 31st? Reply with your costume.
- Ghost, witch or vampire for me? Vote in my DMs.
- Name a horror film that's actually funny. Go.
- Haunted house this weekend? Reply if you're brave.
4. Couple and crush hint notes
A hint note names nobody, and the right person can still reply privately. Keep it light, since everyone you follow back reads it too.
- Looking for a +1 for pumpkin carving. Applications open.
- Matching costumes need two people. Just saying.
- Someone told me ghosts get lonely. Asking for a ghost.
- My costume has a missing half. Hint hint.
- Scary films are better when someone holds the popcorn.
- Still deciding who gets my last mini chocolate.
- You, me and a haunted maze? Reply if that's a yes.
- Not scared of ghosts. Mildly scared of texting first.
- Boo-curious this October. Reply if you are too.
5. Friend-group notes
A friend-group note works like a noticeboard your friends pass every time they open messages. Put the date in it, and the replies become your RSVP list.
- Group costume vote closes Friday. Squad, check the chat.
- Group theme: horror film cast. Dibs on the hero.
- Annual scary-movie night is on. Bring snacks, not spoilers.
- Squad of skeletons, assemble at 8.
- Need one more witch for the coven. Interviews in DMs.
- Pumpkin carving at mine on the 30th. Bring a spoon.
- Our group chat is now a haunted house. Enter carefully.
- Who's driving and who's bringing the fake blood?
- Bestie costume locked in. Big reveal on the 31st.
6. Funny notes
The AoIR researchers also found self-deprecating humour common in ephemeral posts, used to sound authentic. Joke at your own expense, never at a named friend's.
- Dressed as a ghost. Mostly just ignoring messages.
- My costume is "tired adult". It's very realistic.
- Ate the trick-or-treat sweets. The kids will get raisins.
- Bedsheet costume, two eye holes, three trips over the hem.
- My pumpkin looks more scared than scary.
- Bought a skeleton for décor. It's now my best listener.
- Plot twist: the haunted house was just my laundry pile.
- My broom is in for repairs, so I'm walking to the party.
- Vampire costume on. Still asleep by 10.
7. Notes with a song suggestion
These name a genre or era, not a track, so friends reply with picks. A linked Spotify note shows the real song instead, but replaces any text note.
- Tonight's soundtrack: '80s synth horror scores.
- Spooky playlist rule: 1950s rock and roll only.
- Need a creepy organ track for my porch. Suggestions?
- Swing-era monster tunes on repeat while I carve.
- Lo-fi beats plus thunderstorm sounds. Perfect evening.
- Playing '90s goth rock and pretending I was there.
- Classical strings that sound like footsteps. Send some.
- Theremin music in the kitchen. Neighbours confused.
- Halloween disco: '70s funk with a zombie twist.
How Notes differ from Stories and captions
A note is text-first and capped at 60 characters. A Story is a photo or video that also lasts 24 hours, while a feed caption stays with the post and allows 2,200 characters. Every cell below was checked on 13 October 2026.
| Format | Max length | Duration | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text note | 60 characters | Up to 24 hours | Followers you follow back, or Close friends who follow you back |
| Story | Photo or video; no text limit stated | 24 hours, unless added to Highlights | Followers only (private account); public stories may reach Explore |
| Feed post caption | 2,200 characters | Until you delete the post | Anyone (public account) or your followers (private) |
The Stories row comes from Instagram's Stories help page. The caption limit is from Meta's content publishing API reference. The takeaway: only a note turns every reply into a private chat.
How to write a Halloween note that fits 60 characters
Draft in your phone's notes app and count, because Instagram caps a note at 60 characters. The longest lines above run to 12 words, so cut adjectives before you cut the joke.
- Lead with the hook word: "Costume", "Pumpkin", "31 October".
- Use numbers as digits: "3 days" saves four characters over "three days".
- Put the question mark early if you want replies.
- Add emoji last, then recount, since Instagram does not publish how it counts them.
Emoji also read differently by age. In a 2025 JMIR Formative Research focus-group study of 31 adolescents, mean age 16.2, the authors concluded adults are likely to misread emoji used between teens. If aunts and parents follow you back, say it in words.
When 60 characters is not enough for one person
A note goes to everyone you follow back and is gone within 24 hours. When the Halloween message is meant for one person, such as your partner, closest friend, a parent or your child, a private link carries far more.
On SubhSandesh, 90.9% of started pages reach the share step, and the average page collects 11.1 views. Our interactive Halloween card holds up to six photos, your letter and the word you want glowing in a carved pumpkin. Your person knocks on a little haunted house three times, carves the jack-o'-lantern, reads the letter by torchlight and is finally asked "Will you be my boo?"
Its modes cover partner, bestie, family and kids, and it greets a single person rather than a party. The premium cinematic Halloween page adds a 60-second voice note and room for 12 photos.
When an Instagram Note is the wrong choice
A note is the wrong tool for anything you want kept, because it disappears after 24 hours. Instagram says a note can still be reviewed after it disappears, so a one-day lifespan is no licence to post something careless.
It also fails as a crush hint to someone you don't follow back, because they never see it. And a SubhSandesh page loses to a note when you want 200 friends to see one line in passing: the page is a private link with an English-only interface, and setup takes roughly five minutes.
