- • US films released before 1931, such as Nosferatu (1922) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925), are in the public domain, so their intertitles can be quoted word for word.
- • Dracula and Frankenstein (both 1931) stay under US copyright through 31 December 2026 and enter the public domain on 1 January 2027.
- • Night of the Living Dead (1968) is public domain because its copyright notice was dropped when the film was retitled.
- • The US Copyright Office's Circular 33 says short phrases are not copyrightable, but they can still be trademarks, which matters for merchandise.

Halloween Movie Quotes You Can Actually Copy, Film by Film
The Halloween movie quotes you can print word for word come from films in the US public domain: silents released before 1931, such as Nosferatu (1922), plus Night of the Living Dead (1968), which lost its copyright notice. Format matters too: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so a line must survive a small screen and a second read. Below: 10 verified lines from five public-domain films, the Dracula and Frankenstein (1931) scenes that unlock on 1 January 2027, modern moments described, and 40 original lines.
What makes a Halloween movie quote safe to copy?
A public-domain movie quote is a line from a film whose US copyright has expired or never attached, so anyone may reprint it. For films released before 1978, the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain gives the maths: 95 years, ending on 1 January after the 95th year.
That frees every film from 1930 or earlier. The Cornell University Library copyright chart adds a second route: US works published from 1931 to 1977 without a copyright notice lost protection on release.
| Film | Year | US public-domain status | What you may quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nosferatu | 1922 | Public domain: pre-1931 | Any intertitle, from an old print or your own translation |
| The Phantom of the Opera | 1925 | Public domain: pre-1931 | Any intertitle, 1925 cut or 1929 reissue |
| Dracula, Frankenstein | 1931 | Protected to 31 Dec 2026; public domain 1 Jan 2027 | Nothing verbatim before 2027 |
| Night of the Living Dead | 1968 | Public domain: no copyright notice | Any line of dialogue |
| Halloween | 1978 | Protected; public domain no earlier than 2074 | Describe the scene only |
The line between "free" and "ask first" falls on a date. Every 1 January it moves forward one year.
10 Halloween movie quotes from public-domain films
Each line comes from a pre-1931 film or Night of the Living Dead. Quote it as written and credit film and year.
1. Nosferatu (1922)
F. W. Murnau's German silent predates 1931. English intertitles vary; a restoration's new translation can carry its own copyright, so use an old print or translate the German.
- "Is this your wife? What a lovely throat!" (Count Orlok)
- "Blood is life! Blood is life!" (Knock, the estate agent)
- "We will go no further. Here begins the land of phantoms." (the coachmen)
2. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
John Barrymore's American silent needs no translation. Its best-known card is lifted from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890).
- "The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it." (intertitle)
3. The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Lon Chaney's Phantom premiered in New York on 6 September 1925. The lines follow Wikiquote's transcription; check them against your print.
- "Feast your eyes! Glut your soul on my accursed ugliness!" (the Phantom, unmasked)
- "Beneath your dancing feet are the tombs of tortured men!" (the Phantom, as the Red Death)
- "Look not upon my mask — think rather of my devotion which has brought you the gift of song." (the Phantom, to Christine)
4. The Bat Whispers (1930)
This early talkie entered the US public domain on 1 January 2026, with all of 1930. It is more mystery than horror.
- "The entire police force won't do no good. They can't stop ghosts." (the caretaker)
5. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The distributor dropped the copyright notice when it retitled the film from Night of the Flesh Eaters, per Wikipedia's account. Before 1978, no notice meant no copyright.
- "They're coming to get you, Barbra!" (Johnny, teasing his sister)
- "Don't you know what's goin' on out there? This is no Sunday School picnic!" (Ben)
Dracula and Frankenstein become quotable on 1 January 2027
Dracula premiered in New York on 12 February 1931, and Frankenstein followed later that year. Both stay protected through 31 December 2026; Duke's own example of a 1931 work waiting until 2027 is Mood Indigo.
These four scenes become quotable word for word on 1 January 2027. Until then, describe them.
- Bela Lugosi's slow self-introduction on the cobwebbed staircase.
- His reply when he pours Renfield wine and declines a glass himself.
- Colin Clive's repeated cry in the laboratory as the creature's hand moves.
- The boast that follows, about knowing how it feels to be God.
Sequels such as Bride of Frankenstein (1935) keep their own clocks, and trademarks can still cover a character on merchandise. Stoker's 1897 novel, source of the "children of the night" line, is already free.
Modern Halloween movies: the moments people quote
Newer films stay protected for decades, so here is the moment people repeat, not the line. The US Copyright Office's Circular 33 (revised March 2021) says short phrases are not copyrightable but may fall under trademark law, while longer exchanges are protected script.
- Halloween (1978): the sheriff granting everyone a fright on Halloween night.
- The Shining (1980): Jack's grin through the splintered door.
- Poltergeist (1982): Carol Anne at the static-filled television.
- Beetlejuice (1988): the name you never say three times.
- Hocus Pocus (1993): Winifred urging her sisters to run riot through Salem.
- Scream (1996): the phone call asking about your favourite scary movie.
40 original movie-style Halloween lines, by genre
Every line here is original to this page, so use it without credit. In a study of 310 US adults surveyed in April 2020, horror fans were more resilient during the pandemic, and fans of zombie and other "prepper" genres were also better prepared; the authors read scary fiction as safe practice, though the design is correlational.

Putting one movie line on a Halloween page for one person
A quote lands harder inside something the person opens. The interactive Halloween card lets you write a letter they read by flashlight in a dark attic, choose the word they carve into a jack-o'-lantern, and end on a question of up to 60 characters.
A witchy line fits the letter, PHANTOMS the pumpkin, and "Will you haunt the drive-in with me on the 31st?" the question. Its kids mode has no blood, gore or jump scares, so use witchy or B-movie lines there.
The premium Halloween page adds a voice note of up to 60 seconds, enough to read the Phantom's unmasking card aloud. Across the platform, 38.5% of creators password-protect a page before sharing it.
When a movie quote is the wrong choice
Public domain here means the United States. Duke notes that EU countries and many others use life-plus-70 terms, so a US-free film may be protected elsewhere.
Merchandise is the second trap. Circular 33 points short phrases toward trademark law, and studio monsters keep trademarks after copyright ends, so a shirt needs more care than a caption.
The page greets one person, not a party crowd, and its interface is English. For someone who has seen Night of the Living Dead ten times, watching it with them may beat any quote.
