Halloween Movies to Watch in October, Sorted by Mood and Scare
The best Halloween movies to watch are matched to your nerve: start October on a cosy 1/5 like Practical Magic (1998, PG-13) and finish on a 5/5 like The Exorcist (1973, R). Below are 27 films in seven moods with year, runtime, MPA and BBFC rating, scare score and a "watch if you liked" pointer, then a five-weekend schedule and three public-domain classics you can watch legally. If you invite someone, expect the link to be opened on a phone: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are, and each is viewed 11.1 times on average (platform-wide, not Halloween data).
How do you pick a Halloween movie by scare level?
A scare level is a 1–5 score for how hard a film frightens a general adult audience: 1 means no real fear, 5 means sustained dread or graphic horror. It is our editorial judgment, so read it next to the official rating, which describes content rather than fear.
Official ratings carry the detail. The MPA says rating descriptors have been part of every PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 rating since 1990, and the BBFC writes a line of content advice for each release. A 2022 PLOS ONE systematic review notes that the UK has classified films since 1912 and sorts content warnings into 14 domains.
Taste matters too. In a 2025 Cureus study of 300 Bengaluru students aged 20 to 23, a preference for horror correlated with extraversion (0.55) and agreeableness (0.71); the authors suggest horror's shared, group viewing as one reason. It is a small correlational sample, but it backs a plan built around company.
27 Halloween movies to watch, grouped by mood
Each entry gives year, runtime, US MPA/UK BBFC rating, scare score and a film you may know. Runtimes come from BBFC classifications, and "NR" means that body's search returned no record.
1. Cosy and not scary
These suit the first weekend or a friend who hates jump scares. None goes above 1/5.
- Practical Magic (1998), 104 min, PG-13/12A, scare 1/5; if you liked Hocus Pocus
- Young Frankenstein (1974), 105 min, PG/12A, scare 1/5; if you liked Airplane!
- Edward Scissorhands (1990), 104 min, PG-13/12, scare 1/5; if you liked The Nightmare Before Christmas
2. Gothic classics
Gothic horror means old houses and secrets, not chases. Atmosphere comes first.
- The Innocents (1961), 100 min, NR/12A, scare 3/5; if you liked The Others
- Crimson Peak (2015), 118 min, R/15, scare 3/5; if you liked Rebecca
- Sleepy Hollow (1999), 105 min, R/15, scare 3/5; if you liked Beetlejuice
3. Folk horror
Folk horror puts the threat in a village ritual, often in daylight. It unsettles more than it startles.
- The Wicker Man (1973), 84 min, NR/15, scare 3/5; if you liked Hot Fuzz
- The Witch (2015), 93 min, R/NR, scare 4/5; if you liked The Crucible
- Midsommar (2019), 146 min, R/18, scare 4/5; if you liked Get Out
4. Slashers
Slashers are the most predictable genre here, which is the fun. Their ratings run high for violence, not dread.
- Black Christmas (1974), 98 min, R/18, scare 4/5; if you liked When a Stranger Calls
- A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), 91 min, R/15, scare 4/5; if you liked Stranger Things
- Trick 'r Treat (2007), 82 min, R/15, scare 3/5; if you liked Creepshow
- Happy Death Day (2017), 96 min, PG-13/15, scare 2/5; if you liked Groundhog Day
5. Supernatural
This is the top of the ladder. Two of the four score 5/5, so save them for the last weekend.
- The Exorcist (1973), 121 min, R/18, scare 5/5; if you liked Rosemary's Baby
- The Conjuring (2013), 111 min, R/15, scare 4/5; if you liked Insidious
- The Babadook (2014), 93 min, NR/15, scare 4/5; if you liked The Sixth Sense
- Hereditary (2018), 127 min, R/15, scare 5/5; if you liked Midsommar
6. Horror-comedy
Horror-comedy is the safest pick for a mixed group. The laughs land first.
- Shaun of the Dead (2004), 99 min, R/15, scare 2/5; if you liked Zombieland
- What We Do in the Shadows (2014), 85 min, R/15, scare 1/5; if you liked The Office
- Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010), 88 min, R/15, scare 2/5; if you liked The Cabin in the Woods
7. International horror: Japan, Korea, Spain and India
Subtitles keep phones down, so these work well for groups. Years are production years as the BBFC records them.
- Kwaidan (Japan, 1964), 183 min extended cut, NR/PG, scare 2/5; if you liked Spirited Away
- A Tale of Two Sisters (South Korea, 2003), 114 min, R/15, scare 4/5; if you liked The Sixth Sense
- Train to Busan (South Korea, 2016), 118 min, NR/15, scare 3/5; if you liked World War Z
- The Orphanage (Spain, 2007), 105 min, R/15, scare 3/5; if you liked The Devil's Backbone
- [REC] (Spain, 2007), 78 min, R/18, scare 5/5; if you liked The Blair Witch Project
- Tumbbad (India, 2018), 107 min, NR/15, scare 3/5; if you liked Pan's Labyrinth
- Stree (India, 2018), 127 min, NR/15, scare 2/5; if you liked Bhool Bhulaiyaa
Where to start: one film per scare level
One night only? Pick a row by how much fear you want. Each row is a strong pick under 100 minutes.
| Mood | Film | Year | MPA/BBFC | Scare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horror-comedy | What We Do in the Shadows | 2014 | R/15 | 1/5 |
| Slasher | Happy Death Day | 2017 | PG-13/15 | 2/5 |
| Folk horror | The Wicker Man | 1973 | NR/15 | 3/5 |
| Supernatural | The Babadook | 2014 | NR/15 | 4/5 |
| International | [REC] | 2007 | R/18 | 5/5 |
Notice that the rating does not track the scare. What We Do in the Shadows is rated R for bloody violent content yet scores 1/5, while The Babadook has no MPA rating at all and scores 4/5.
How to build an October watch schedule, weekend by weekend
October 2027 starts on a Friday, which gives five full weekends ending on Sunday 31 October, Halloween itself (in 2026, Halloween falls on a Saturday). Climb one step per weekend so nobody is thrown in at 5/5.
- Weekend 1, 2–3 Oct: cosy plus gothic, such as Practical Magic then The Innocents (204 minutes)
- Weekend 2, 9–10 Oct: horror-comedy plus folk horror, such as Shaun of the Dead then The Wicker Man (183 minutes)
- Weekend 3, 16–17 Oct: international night, either Kwaidan alone (183 minutes) or The Orphanage then [REC] (183 minutes)
- Weekend 4, 23–24 Oct: slashers, such as Black Christmas then A Nightmare on Elm Street (189 minutes)
- Weekend 5, 30–31 Oct: Hereditary or The Exorcist on Saturday, then Trick 'r Treat on Halloween night, since it is set on 31 October
End each night on the lighter film if anyone scares easily. Keep runtimes under about 3.5 hours a night, or the second film gets watched half-asleep.
A month of horror is unlikely to wreck anyone's nerves on current evidence. A 2026 BMC Psychology diary study of 199 adults found that anxiety one day predicted more violent true-crime viewing the next, and no evidence that this frightening media raised anxiety, though every effect fell below the authors' threshold for a meaningful size.
Public-domain Halloween classics you can watch legally
The US Copyright Office's duration circular states that all works published in the United States before 1 January 1931 are in the public domain. That covers the silent classics below, which the BBFC rates as low as U.
- Nosferatu (1922), about 91 min on video, BBFC PG, scare 2/5, the original vampire film
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920; the BBFC lists it as 1919), about 66 min, BBFC U, scare 2/5, painted, tilted sets that still look strange
- Night of the Living Dead (1968), 95 min on DVD, BBFC 15, scare 4/5, the film that set the modern zombie rules
Night of the Living Dead is the exception to the 1931 cut-off. It is widely treated as public domain in the US because its 1968 release prints lacked a copyright notice, and the Internet Archive hosts a copy marked public domain. Two cautions: public-domain status is a US rule and differs by country, and restorations or newly composed scores may be separately copyrighted.
Why this list names no streaming services
Streaming catalogues change monthly and differ by country, so a "where to watch" line printed for the US is wrong in India or the UK within weeks. A film's year, runtime and rating, by contrast, do not change.
So none of the 30 titles here carries a platform. Search each one in your own apps for your region on the day you watch; only the three public-domain films are near-certain to be findable, because anyone may host them.
Sending a watch-together invite, and when not to
For one person, the Halloween card on /happy-halloween works as the invite. After three knocks they carve a pumpkin until your chosen word lights up, find your letter by flashlight in a dark attic, then face the closing question, editable up to 60 characters, so it can name the film; an email reaches you on their first answer.
It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes, holds up to six photos, and ends in a 1080×1920 Boo License. If you want the invite to stay sealed until film night, the premium Halloween page adds an optional unlock time, a voice note of up to 60 seconds and a 280-character reply box. 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page before sharing, so private invites are normal here.
It is the wrong tool for a group. Both pages are one-person greeting pages in English, not party invitations, so for six friends a group chat with the five-weekend list above does the job better. And if the person is already on your sofa, skip the link and press play.
