- • Run a Halloween party playlist in five phases: arrival 70–100 BPM, mingling 100–115, peak dance 115–130, an instrumental contest bed, then a 65–95 BPM wind-down.
- • Plan about 16 tracks an hour: the 23 phase tracks timed for this guide averaged 3 minutes 50 seconds, so a 3.5-hour party needs about 55 tracks plus 10% spare.
- • In a 2025 EEG study of 80 people dancing in pairs, a brain marker of moving together appeared only when partners could see each other, so keep dance-floor lights low, not off.
- • In NSW, amplified music should not reach a neighbour's home after midnight on a Saturday (31 October 2026) or after 10 pm on a Sunday (31 October 2027).
- • A home party needs no music licence; a bar, ticketed event or UK workplace generally does (PPL PRS TheMusicLicence in the UK, ASCAP or BMI in the US).

How to Build a Halloween Party Playlist That Runs All Night
A Halloween party playlist works when it follows the party clock in five phases, from a quiet arrival block at 70–100 BPM to a peak dance block at 115–130 BPM, then a contest bed and a wind-down; a 3.5-hour party needs about 55 tracks. Build it early: in SubhSandesh's nearest festival analogue, Raksha Bandhan 2026, 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself, and 86.1% of on-time ones within 24 hours of it.
Below are the phases with minutes, tempos and example tracks. Then come six mini-sets by crowd, runtime maths, a noise rule and the licence question.
What is a phase-based Halloween party playlist?
A phase-based playlist is five ordered blocks, each matched to what guests are doing: arriving, talking, dancing, watching a contest, leaving. Each block has a target tempo in beats per minute (BPM) and a length, so energy rises and falls on purpose, not by shuffle.
To find a track's BPM, tap along for 15 seconds and multiply by four. BPM databases often report double or half the felt tempo: "Nights in White Satin" is listed at 157 BPM and feels like about 78.
The 5 phases of a Halloween party playlist, with BPM and minutes
Bracketed BPMs come from a public BPM database, checked October 2026. The ranges are our planning targets, not a published standard.
1. Arrival (0–30 minutes): 70–100 BPM
Guests are taking coats, finding drinks and meeting strangers, so the music should sit under conversation. Run it at roughly half the volume you plan for the peak, about 8 tracks long.
- Ghost Town — The Specials (74)
- Feeling Good — Nina Simone (79)
- Heathens — Twenty One Pilots (90)
- Strange Magic — Electric Light Orchestra (95)
- Witchy Woman — Eagles (99)
2. Mingling (30–90 minutes): 100–115 BPM
Groups are forming, so familiar mid-tempo songs give people something to talk about. Plan about 15 tracks and raise the volume a notch every 20 minutes.
- Superstition — Stevie Wonder (100)
- Black Hole Sun — Soundgarden (105)
- Spooky — Classics IV (107)
- Running Up That Hill — Kate Bush (108)
- Wicked Game — Chris Isaak (113)
3. Peak dance block (90–150 minutes): 115–130 BPM
Costumes are on and someone moves the coffee table. Plan about 15 tracks, no ballads, lights low but not off.
- Bad Romance — Lady Gaga (119)
- Somebody's Watching Me — Rockwell (124)
- Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) — Eurythmics (125)
- Hungry Like the Wolf — Duran Duran (127)
- You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) — Dead or Alive (128)
Keep the lights up a little, and here is the evidence. In a 2025 Journal of Neuroscience study, Bigand and colleagues recorded EEG from 80 people dancing in pairs and found a brain signal for how well partners moved together, present only when they could see each other. Vertical bounce best drove a watching partner's brain activity, so pick bouncy tracks and leave dancers enough light.
4. Costume contest and games bed (150–170 minutes): 85–120 BPM, instrumental
During a parade or game, sung words compete with the host's voice. Use about 5 instrumentals at half the peak volume that can stop mid-bar unnoticed.
- The Pink Panther Theme — Henry Mancini (117)
- Main Titles from Beetlejuice — Danny Elfman (85)
- Spooky — Mike Sharpe, the 1967 instrumental original
- Batman Theme — Neal Hefti (152), a deliberate spike for the winner's walk
5. Wind-down (last 30–40 minutes): 65–95 BPM
Slower songs signal the end better than an announcement does. Plan about 8 tracks and drop the volume a notch every 10 minutes.
- Moondance — Van Morrison (67)
- Nights in White Satin — The Moody Blues (listed 157, felt at half that)
- Bad Moon Rising — Creedence Clearwater Revival (90)
- Creep — Radiohead (92)
- Lullaby — The Cure (94)
Halloween party playlist phases compared: minutes, BPM and energy
The table sets out the five phases for a party that runs 210 minutes (3.5 hours). Times are minutes from the first guest's arrival.
| Phase | Minutes | BPM target | Energy | Example track (BPM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | 0–30 | 70–100 | Low | Ghost Town (74) |
| Mingling | 30–90 | 100–115 | Medium | Spooky (107) |
| Peak dance | 90–150 | 115–130 | High | Hungry Like the Wolf (127) |
| Contest and games bed | 150–170 | 85–120, instrumental | Medium | The Pink Panther Theme (117) |
| Wind-down | 170–210 | 65–95 | Low | Lullaby (94) |
The peak block gets the most minutes, 60 of 210, but the two low blocks together take 70, which is where most host playlists run out of songs. Build those two blocks first.

Check every kids' and office track for drinking lines, because more danceable songs are likelier to carry one. A 2026 study in Alcohol and Alcoholism by Alen and colleagues analysed 6,110 Billboard songs released 1959–2020: 16.1% referenced alcohol, more danceable songs had higher odds (OR 1.35), and instrumental tracks had lower odds (OR 0.85). Tempo itself showed no link.
No-English global set
- Monster — EXO (Korean, 2016)
- Psycho — Red Velvet (Korean, 2019)
- Kaibutsu — YOASOBI (Japanese; the opening theme of the anime Beastars)
- El Muerto Vivo — Peret (Catalan rumba sung in Spanish; the title means "the living dead man")
- Du Hast — Rammstein (German, 1997)

- Sikiliza Kwa Wahenga — Michael Abels, from Get Out (2017); Swahili for "listen to your ancestors"
How many songs does a Halloween party playlist need?
Plan on about 16 tracks an hour. The common rule of thumb is 3.5 minutes a song, or 17 an hour, but the 23 timed phase tracks above average 3 minutes 50 seconds, which works out to 15.7 an hour. A 3.5-hour party therefore needs about 55 tracks; add 10% spare, so around 60.
Set crossfade to 4–6 seconds for the low and mid blocks and off for the contest bed, so a stop lands cleanly. Download the playlist for offline play before guests arrive.
Volume and neighbours: the NSW rule for 31 October 2026 and 2027
Noise rules are local, so check your council. In New South Wales, the EPA's neighbourhood noise guidance (updated 31 August 2026) says amplified music should not be heard inside a neighbour's home after midnight on a Friday, Saturday or the day before a public holiday, and after 10 pm on other nights.
That splits the two Halloweens. Saturday 31 October 2026 runs to a midnight cut-off; Sunday 31 October 2027 has a 10 pm cut-off. A fine of $400 ($800 for corporations) may follow if the noise continues within 40 days of a warning, so start the wind-down block 40 minutes before the cut-off.
Do you need a music licence for a Halloween party playlist?
Not for a party at home with friends. US copyright law defines performing "publicly" as playing music at a place open to the public, or where a substantial number of people outside a normal circle of family and social acquaintances gather (17 U.S.C. §101). A ticketed event or bar night is public; venues license through organisations such as ASCAP and BMI.
In the UK, the PPL PRS licensing FAQ says music played outside a domestic environment counts as a public performance, even if only employees hear it. Music at an office Halloween party is usually covered only if the business holds TheMusicLicence, and PPL PRS can arrange a temporary permit for a one-off event.
A Halloween card with its own song, for one person
Our interactive Halloween card with music is not a party tool but a one-person greeting for the friend who missed it. Its soundtrack is your choice: a YouTube link (sound only, and you can set where it begins), one of eight built-in favourites including "Monster Mash", or the spooky music box. Nothing plays until your friend has knocked on the haunted house three times.
It takes about 5 minutes to make, with up to six photos and a letter. 48.3% of our shared pages are opened on a phone, and the card opens in any phone or laptop browser. The premium Halloween page timed to your song's chorus begins the music at the first tap, takes a voice message of up to a minute, and jumps to the chorus when they say yes.
When a playlist is the wrong tool: 2 limits
- Over 60 guests or a big room. A phone and one speaker cannot fill it; hire a DJ or a PA.
- The card. Every screen is English, and sound comes from a single phone or laptop, so it can never soundtrack a room.
