Halloween Puns: 70 Original Lines, Sorted by Monster
The best Halloween puns hide a second word inside an ordinary sentence: a ghost who "went straight through", a skeleton who says "see you to-marrow". Below are 70 original Halloween puns sorted by monster, from ghost and boo puns to skeleton and bone puns, each labelled with its trick.
Most will be read, not heard: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone and each averages 11.1 views (platform-wide figures). Every line is clean: "for adults" here means grown-up wit, not innuendo.
What is a pun, and how do Halloween puns work?
A pun is wordplay in which similar sounds, or different meanings of one word, are deliberately confused, as Wiktionary's entry for "pun" puts it. The listener briefly holds two meanings at once, through one of five mechanics:
- Homophone: same sound, different spelling (mourning, morning).
- Near-homophone: almost the same sound (marrow, tomorrow).
- Double meaning: one word, two senses (backbone).
- Literal idiom: a figure of speech made physically true (a bat, head over heels).
- Phrase swap: one word in a fixed phrase swapped for a spooky one (don't hex the messenger).
Near-sound puns are not second-rate: in Kao, Levy and Goodman's Cognitive Science study, 65 identical-homophone puns and 80 near-homophone puns rated equally funny (p = .896). Across 435 sentences, funniness rose when both meanings stayed plausible and each was propped up by different words. In "only the skeleton had the backbone", "skeleton" supports one meaning and "volunteer" the other.
The trick is old. In Romeo and Juliet, the dying Mercutio says "ask for me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man" (Act 3, Scene 1).

Which pun type fits a caption, a card or a sign?
Here are five mechanics and where each lands. The last column is its slot on the Halloween card.
| Monster and mechanic | Example | Best use | Slot on the Halloween card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost, double meaning | "You're my favourite boo…" | Partner card | Last line of the letter |
| Skeleton, near-homophone | "See you to-marrow." | Caption under 50 characters | Inside the letter |
| Mummy, near-homophone | "Tomb it may concern:" | Letter opener | First line of the letter |
| Pumpkin, double meaning | "Let's patch things up…" | Apology card | Carved word: PATCH |
| Witch, phrase swap | "Don't hex the messenger." | Door sign | None; print it |
Near-homophones need the reader's eye. Double meanings survive being read aloud.
Funny, for adults or for kids: how to choose
Death puns should feel grim, yet amuse. In Sun and colleagues' 2025 Communications Biology study, 42 people rated pun sentences built on negative words 5.06 for amusement against 2.96 for plain sentences, and also more negative (5.36 against 4.39). The authors, testing Chinese puns, call this mixed feelings.
That is the adult Halloween pun: the zombie and vampire groups carry the darkest words, and the wit sits in grown-up idioms.
For children, stay with the pumpkin, bat and candy groups. Skip the mourning and six-feet-down lines.
Put one pun on a Halloween card for one person
One pun can carry a whole greeting. The interactive Halloween card with photos and music takes about five minutes: names, a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin.
They knock three times, carve until your word glows, and read your letter by flashlight. The closing question defaults to "Will you be my boo?", editable up to 60 characters, and you get an email the first time they answer. Its Boo License assigns one of eight costumes, from ghost to bat, matching the groups above.
If your pun lands better spoken, the premium Halloween page with a voice note adds a recording of up to 60 seconds and a 280-character reply box, so they can pun back. Platform-wide, 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page and 90.9% of started pages get published.
When a pun page is the wrong choice
Both pages greet one person; neither is a party tool. For a party sign or group chat, print or paste the line.
Puns rarely survive translation: Kao's 435 sentences were English, Sun's 150 puns Chinese. The card's interface is English, so for a recipient who reads another language first, pun in theirs.
