- • Size the quote to the card part: 8 words or fewer on the cover, 12 to 25 words on the inside-left panel, one line for the sign-off.
- • USPS card postage applies only to postcards up to 4¼ × 6 inches; a square envelope fails the 1.3 aspect-ratio rule and pays a nonmachinable surcharge.
- • USPS lists First-Class Mail at 1 to 5 days, so post by Friday 23 October 2026 or Friday 22 October 2027.
- • On SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself, so late deciders need a same-day option (nearest analogue; no Halloween data exists).
- • In a 2023 #KindnessByPost study of 20 interviewees, people kept their cards; a shop-bought card without a handwritten message could disappoint.

Halloween Quotes for Cards: 57 Lines Sized to Each Card Part
The best Halloween quotes for cards are sized for their spot: a cover headline of 8 words or fewer, a 12 to 25 word quote inside, a one-line sign-off, an envelope teaser and a short postcard back. Below are 57 original lines sorted by card part, plus 4 public-domain lines checked against Project Gutenberg.
A mailed card needs about a week, yet people decide late: on SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself, and not one was built more than 7 days ahead. That is our nearest analogue (no Halloween usage data exists), so this page ends with posting dates and a same-day option.
What makes a Halloween quote work on a card?
A Halloween card quote is a short line written for a fixed space on paper, so the card sets its length. A cover line must read from arm's length; the inside can carry a full thought.
The space is small. A US postcard that qualifies for card postage is at most 4¼ × 6 inches under the USPS Domestic Mail Manual, section 101. Quotes longer than 25 words crowd out the part people keep: your own handwriting.
57 original Halloween quotes for cards, sorted by card part
Every line is original and clean enough for a classroom or a grandparent. Swap [name] for the recipient or yourself.
1. Front-of-card headlines: 9 lines, 8 words or fewer
These must read at a glance. Write them large.
- Something wonderful is lurking inside.
- Open slowly. The bats are still asleep.
- Hello from the haunted side of town.
- Warning: contains one friendly ghost.
- Pumpkins lit, porch swept, thinking of you.
- A little spooky, mostly sweet.
- Knock twice. A note is waiting.
- Moonrise, candlelight and you on my mind.
- From our cauldron to your doorstep.
2. Inside-left quotes: 8 lines, 12 to 25 words
This panel faces your message and sets its mood. Match it to the person.
- Every carved pumpkin was once a plain one that someone decided to light from the inside.
- The best part of a dark night is the window someone left glowing for you.
- Ghosts are memories that refuse to leave the room, and some of my favourite ones are you.
- October hands out masks so everyone can be brave for one evening.
- A full moon, a cold street and a warm hand to hold: that is the whole recipe.
- Fear is loud for a moment. Laughter echoes for years.
- Some treats come in wrappers; the best ones arrive in envelopes.
- On the night of a thousand masks, the people who know your real face matter most.
3. Inside-right sign-offs: 8 lines
It sits under your message. One line keeps your name last.
- With love and one stolen toffee, [name]
- Yours from beyond the fog, [name]
- Your favourite ghost, [name]
- Sealed with a spell and a smile, [name]
- Haunting you kindly until next October, [name]
- Bats, cats and hugs, [name]
- Save me a pumpkin seed. Love, [name]
- Fondly, the crooked jack-o'-lantern household
4. Envelope teasers: 7 lines for the front or the flap
Everyone sees the envelope first, carrier included. Write on the flap, away from the address and stamp.
- Do not open before 31 October.
- Contents: one card, zero spiders. Probably.
- Handle gently: a ghost is napping inside.
- Special delivery from the pumpkin patch.
- Postie, please knock twice.
- Sealed at midnight. Read by daylight.
- Treat inside. No tricks, promise.
5. Postcard backs: 6 lines, 15 to 25 words
The address and stamp take half the back. These read like a short dispatch.
- Greetings from the land of long shadows. We carved three pumpkins and burnt two trays of cookies.
- The trees have gone full orange and the neighbours put a skeleton on the roof. Thinking of you.
- Fog this morning, sparklers tonight. The kids are a dragon and a toaster. Miss you on our porch.
- No ghosts sighted yet, but the cat is suspicious. Happy Halloween from all four of us.
- Halloween is not the same without your terrible jokes. Call me on the 31st.
- Wrote this by lamplight with a pumpkin watching. It insists I say hello.
6. Handmade-card lettering quotes: 9 lines, 2 to 5 words
Short lines are easiest to hand-letter or stencil. Pencil first, then ink.
- Hey, boo.
- Stay spooky, stay kind.
- Brewing up good wishes.
- Witching you well.
- Glow on, little pumpkin.
- Bats about you.
- Full moon, full heart.
- Moon-sized hugs.
- Hocus pocus, you're my focus.
7. Classroom card swaps: 10 lines for kids
These work like Valentine's swap cards, one per classmate. None mention sweets, so they suit any classroom rule.
- To ____: you are my favourite pumpkin in the patch!
- You make recess less scary. Happy Halloween!
- I would share my last gummy worm with you.
- Our class is the friendliest haunted house.
- You're a-maze-ing, just like a corn maze.
- Batty about our class!
- Owl always save you a seat.
- You make our classroom glow.
- Thanks for being a spook-tacular reading buddy.
- No tricks today, just high fives.
4 public-domain lines for a Halloween card, from Project Gutenberg
These are copied from the Project Gutenberg text of A Midsummer Night's Dream (first printed 1600) and Longfellow's Complete Poetical Works.
"Now it is the time of night / That the graves, all gaping wide, / Every one lets forth his sprite" (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck, 1600)
"Following darkness like a dream" (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck, 1600)
"I am sent with broom before, / To sweep the dust behind the door." (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck, 1600)
"All houses wherein men have lived and died / Are haunted houses." (Longfellow, "Haunted Houses", 1858)
How many words fit on each part of a Halloween card?
Card sizes are trade conventions: A2 cards sell at 4¼ × 5½ inches, A7 at 5 × 7 inches, and the UK's A6 at 105 × 148 mm. The limits below are our estimates for clear handwriting on an A2 card, not a standard.
| Card part | Max words (our estimate) | Tone | Example from this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front headline or lettering | 8 | Bold, playful | Something wonderful is lurking inside. |
| Inside-left quote | 25 | Reflective | Fear is loud for a moment. |
| Inside-right message and sign-off | 40 to 60 | Warm, personal | Haunting you kindly until next October, [name] |
| Envelope teaser | 8 | Mischievous | Postie, please knock twice. |
| Postcard back or swap card | 25 | Newsy, cheerful | No ghosts sighted yet. |
On an A7 card, roughly double the inside numbers. USPS treats a letter as nonmachinable if length divided by height is under 1.3, so square cards pay a surcharge, while a 5 × 7 card in an A7 envelope fits the 11½ × 6⅛ inch letter limit.
Handwriting tips that keep a Halloween card readable
Recipients notice effort. In a 2023 BMC Public Health study of the #KindnessByPost card exchange, 20 interviewees kept cards and returned to them to lift their mood, while a shop-bought card without a handwritten message could disappoint.
Legibility is the other half. A 2026 qualitative study of 10 adults aged 67 to 93 with vision loss found handwriting was often kept for meaningful writing such as cards, and one participant worried messy writing looked like low effort. Low-tech aids such as bold-lined paper helped.
- Use a dark pen on a pale card; orange ink on black card is hard to read.
- Write your message first and the quote last.
- Print the cover line in capitals and the inside in your usual hand.
When to post a Halloween card: allow a week
Post by Friday 23 October 2026 for Saturday 31 October 2026, and by Friday 22 October 2027 for Sunday 31 October 2027. USPS lists First-Class Mail at 1 to 5 days, with postcards from $0.65 and letters from $0.82 (checked 13 October 2026). Outside the US we did not verify times, so allow a week, longer abroad.
The $0.65 card price applies only up to 4¼ × 6 inches. A folded 5 × 7 card goes at the letter price, and a square one costs more again.
A same-day Halloween card when the post is too slow
If it is 29 October and the card is still blank, a Halloween card they open as a little haunted house arrives as a private link. You add a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin; they knock three times and read your letter by flashlight. You get an email the first time they answer "Will you be my boo?" (editable, up to 60 characters).
It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes; the kids tone has no gore or jump scares. It is a one-person page, not a party invitation.
The premium Halloween page with a voice note adds a 60-second voice note and up to 12 photos. A link suits phone readers: 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on one, platform-wide.
When a paper card beats a Halloween link
Paper wins when the card itself is the gift. The #KindnessByPost participants kept and displayed their post, which a link cannot do on a fridge door. Classroom swaps need paper too, since the point is a stack of small cards to hand out.
Paper also wins for a grandparent who rarely opens links and for a card signed by a whole class. Our rule: post a card if you are ahead of 23 October, and send a link if you are behind it.
