- • Rizz was Oxford's Word of the Year 2023 after more than 32,000 votes; it means attracting someone through style, charm or attractiveness, and comes from 'charisma'.
- • A pickup line is a script; rizz is the delivery. Gen-Z rizz lines are short (under about 15 words in a story reply), self-aware and judged on the follow-up.
- • The bigger the audience, the less flirty the line: a public costume-post comment should be a compliment, and the flirting belongs in a one-to-one DM.
- • Flirting has gone one-to-one and mobile: 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone and 38.5% of creators password-protect theirs (platform-wide, not Halloween data).
- • In a 619-person study, people felt embarrassed for others whether the blunder was deliberate or not, so 'I know this is cringe' protects you less than you think.

Halloween Rizz Lines for DMs, Story Replies and the Party
Halloween rizz lines are short, self-aware openers that use the costume, the candy or the spooky mood as an excuse to start talking, and they work on delivery more than wording. Most of that happens on a phone. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, and 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it. Those are platform-wide figures, not Halloween ones, but they show the same thing: flirting now happens one-to-one, on a small screen.
Below are 32 original, clean lines sorted by where you send them, four unspoken-rizz moves, and what research says about where cringe starts.
What does rizz mean, and how is it different from a pickup line?
Rizz is the ability to attract someone through style, charm or attractiveness. Oxford University Press made it the Oxford Word of the Year 2023 after more than 32,000 votes, beating finalists "Swiftie", "situationship" and "prompt".
The word comes from the middle of "charisma", like "fridge" from refrigerator. Oxford's corpus showed use peaking in June 2023, when Tom Holland said in an interview that he had "limited rizz".
A pickup line is a script. Rizz is everything around it: timing, delivery and how you handle the reply. In practice:
- Irony. A Gen-Z rizz line usually admits it is a line. The joke is partly on the sender.
- Brevity. It fits in a story reply, under about 15 words.
- The second message. Rizz is judged on how you follow up, not on the opener.
32 original Halloween rizz lines, sorted by where you send them
Every line was written for this page and kept clean. Each group gives who it suits and the cringe risk.
1. DM openers when you have never really talked
Best for: someone you follow but have not spoken to. Cringe risk: medium, because it lands cold, so end on a question.
- "Not to be dramatic, but your costume just ended my whole feed. Who are you supposed to be?"
- "I was going to send a pumpkin emoji and leave it there. Then I remembered I have rizz. Hi."
- "Be honest: is your Halloween plan open to one (1) extra skeleton?"
- "Your fit is giving haunted Victorian portrait, and I mean that as the highest compliment."
- "Not saying it's fate, but we both posted a black cat this week."
- "Quick poll: group costume this year, or are you taking applications for a plus-one ghost?"
2. Story and Snap replies
Best for: someone you already talk to a little. Cringe risk: low, because a story reply is private and easy to ignore.
- "Your pumpkin has more rizz than me and I'm not okay."
- "That costume is a 10. The cat in the background is an 11. Respectfully."
- "Who did your makeup? I need them to fix my entire life."
- "Costume rating: 10/10. Scary level: 0. My heart rate: concerning."
- "Is this a soft launch for the costume or for you? Because I'm seated."
- "Tell your ghost decorations I said hi. And you. Mostly you."
3. Comments under their costume post
Best for: a compliment their friends will also read. Cringe risk: high if flirty, low if a straight compliment.
- "Costume of the year and it's not close."
- "The commitment to the bit is unmatched."
- "Main character energy, spooky edition."
- "This is going in the group chat as the new standard."
- "Witch era looks good on you."
4. Out loud at the Halloween party
Best for: a costume party you are both at. Cringe risk: medium; a question about their costume beats any line.
- "I've been trying to work out your costume for ten minutes. Put me out of my misery."
- "I came as a ghost so I could vanish if this goes badly. How's it going so far?"
- "Settle a debate: candy corn, a treat or a crime?"
- "Your costume made me rethink mine, which is a bedsheet. So, thanks."
- "You're the only costume here I'd want a photo with. Can I get one?"
- "On a scale from zombie to vampire, how's your night going?"
5. Self-aware lines that admit they are cringe
Best for: someone who already laughs at your jokes. Cringe risk: the point is to own it, so keep it to one per conversation.
- "Legally I have to say one Halloween rizz line. You're my favorite treat. Okay, normal conversation now."
- "I had a really smooth line ready, then my plastic fangs fell out."
- "You must be a haunted house, because I keep coming back even though I'm scared."
- "Incoming cringe: you're boo-tiful. That's it. I'll see myself out."
- "Rate my rizz out of 10, and be gentle, it's spooky season."
6. Follow-ups once they reply
Best for: a conversation that is going well. Cringe risk: low, if you match their message length.
- "Okay, you passed the vibe check. Coffee first, or straight to a pumpkin patch?"
- "Upgrading you from 'story reply' to 'person I text first'."
- "So are we matching next year, or do I need to apply formally?"
- "I made you something. It asks one question and the No button has commitment issues."
Unspoken rizz: 4 Halloween moves that need no line
Unspoken rizz is attraction you create without a line: a gesture or choice that shows effort. Costumes make Halloween ideal for it.
Playfulness is the trait underneath. In a 2021 study of 1,191 Brazilian adults in Evolutionary Human Sciences, other-directed playfulness predicted more short- and long-term partners in men, and whimsical playfulness more short-term relationships in women. It counted partners, not rizz, and shows correlation, not cause.
- The coordinated costume. Pick halves that need each other: the moon and the werewolf, the ghost and the ghost hunter.
- The matching-costume soft launch. Post a group photo where only your two costumes match and let the comments work it out. Agree on it together first.
- The candy that proves you listened. If they once said they hate candy corn, bring their favorite instead.
- The detail compliment. "The stitching on your sleeve is unreal" beats "you look great".
Which rizz works where: DMs, comments, parties and the follow-up
The table compares five places Halloween rizz happens. Our figures are platform-wide, not Halloween-specific.
| Where | Who sees it | Ideal length | Relevant SubhSandesh number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold DM | 1 person | 10–20 words, ending in a question | 48.3% of shared pages open on a phone |
| Story or Snap reply | 1 person | Under 15 words | 48.4% of views are on a touch device |
| Public comment | Everyone who follows them | Under 8 words | 38.5% of creators password-protect their page |
| Out loud at a party | 2–6 people nearby | One sentence, then a question | No data; we don't measure parties |
| Follow-up page after a yes | 1 person | 5-minute build | 11.1 views per created page on average |
The bigger the audience, the less flirty the line. A public comment is a compliment, not a confession.
When does rizz turn into cringe?
Cringe is about the audience as much as the person you are flirting with. In a 2011 PLOS One study, Krach and colleagues surveyed 619 German-speaking adults. People felt embarrassed for someone whether that person acted on purpose or by accident, and whether or not they knew they looked foolish.
So "I know this is cringe" protects you less than you think, especially in a comment their friends will read. A 2021 paper on cringe humor in Humanities describes it as amusement plus embarrassment at someone breaking a social norm, shaped by the audience's closeness and whether the break looks intentional (we read the abstract only). In practice, rizz turns into cringe at four points:
- The third send. One ironic line is charming; three unanswered ones are a pattern.
- The public flirt. A flirty comment puts their friends in the audience.
- The dirty line. Every line here is clean on purpose: from someone they barely know, innuendo reads as pressure, not humor.
- No reply. Silence is an answer. Do not send a second line.
The W rizz follow-through: ask "Will you be my boo?"
Once you are actually talking, a one-question page can turn rizz into a real answer. The interactive Halloween card that asks "Will you be my boo?" takes about five minutes: add their name, a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin, then send a private link by WhatsApp, Instagram or text.
They knock three times, carve the jack-o'-lantern, read your letter by flashlight and reach the question. The No button runs away a few times, and you get an email the first time they answer. It ends with a 1080×1920 Boo License, Instagram Story size, showing the costume you chose for them: a soft launch they control.
On SubhSandesh, 90.9% of started pages are actually published and shared, and pages average 11.1 views each. Views are not unique visitors, so one person reopening the page counts more than once.
If you want an actual date rather than a label, The Invitation date page fits better. It is an invitation they must answer, and a yes turns into a countdown.
When rizz, or a page, is the wrong move
A page is the wrong move for someone you have never spoken to. The runaway No button is a joke between two people who already like each other; to a near-stranger it can read as not taking no for an answer. Send a page only once they have flirted back.
The page has limits too: the interface is English only, it is built for one person rather than a party group chat, and it will not find you a date. If they are standing next to you, just ask.
