Halloween Social Media Post Ideas: A 31-Day Plan for October
Halloween social media post ideas laid out as a 31-day October calendar: one format per day across carousels, Reels, polls, a costume contest and behind-the-scenes posts, with 2026 and 2027 weekdays, contest rules and an alt-text routine.

- • A 31-day October plan rotating carousels, Reels, polls, a costume contest and behind-the-scenes posts never repeats a format on consecutive days.
- • In a 2025 study of 1,304 Instagram posts, Reels drew the highest engagement despite being only 17.4% of posts.
- • Facebook's Pages Terms (revised 8 March 2018) ban 'tag your friends to enter' and 'share on your Timeline to enter' promotions.
- • 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so every post should read on a vertical screen.
- • Caption the sounds in Halloween Reels and keep strobe edits under W3C's three-flashes-per-second limit.

Halloween Social Media Post Ideas: A 31-Day Plan for October
The most useful set of Halloween social media post ideas is a dated plan: one post a day from 1 to 31 October, rotating five formats (carousel, Reel, poll, a user-generated costume contest and behind-the-scenes) so that no format runs two days in a row. Front-load the heavy work, because people act late. On SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 greeting pages were built on the festival day itself; that is a different festival used as the nearest analogue, and n = 89 is too small to split further. Make every post phone-first too, since 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone.
Below: the calendar with 2026 and 2027 weekdays, two engagement studies on formats, contest rules from Meta and the US FTC, and an accessibility routine.
What is a Halloween content calendar?
A Halloween content calendar fixes one post format and one topic for every day of October before the month starts. It turns a loose list of Halloween content ideas into 31 decisions made once.
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, so Day 1 is a Thursday in 2026 and a Friday in 2027. Each day names a format and a job rather than a product, so it suits a café, a salon or a solo creator.
The 31-day Halloween posting plan, week by week
BTS means behind-the-scenes; Contest means the user-generated costume contest. Entries open on Day 8 and close at 23:59 on Day 28, with the time zone stated in the rules.
Days 1–7: Thu–Wed in 2026, Fri–Thu in 2027
- Day 1, Carousel: "October at our place": contest dates, the prize, poll days, and how to mute seasonal posts.
- Day 2, BTS: opening last year's decoration box and showing what survived.
- Day 3, Poll: three costumes for your mascot, logo character or pet; the winner is revealed on Day 24.
- Day 4, Reel: a 15-second clip of the first orange detail going on your window, desk or packaging.
- Day 5, Carousel: your products re-sorted into an orange, black and purple palette.
- Day 6, BTS: the person on your team (or you) who takes Halloween most seriously, and their reason.
- Day 7, Contest: the announcement post with theme, entry window, prize, judging criteria and a link to full rules.
Days 8–14: Thu–Wed in 2026, Fri–Thu in 2027
- Day 8, Reel: the costume you nearly chose, tried on badly, in ten seconds.
- Day 9, BTS: making or packing the contest prize.
- Day 10, Poll: spooky or cute for this year's packaging, menu board or thumbnail.
- Day 11, Carousel: a five-step how-to using something you sell or make, finished with a Halloween touch.
- Day 12, Contest: a first-entries roundup, reposting only entrants who said yes.
- Day 13, Reel: a sound-on process clip (pouring, cutting, stitching) with captions that name each sound.
- Day 14, BTS: how many hours the October push really takes, shown as a handwritten tally.
Days 15–21: Thu–Wed in 2026, Fri–Thu in 2027
- Day 15, Carousel: three costumes a follower could build from items in your shop or studio.
- Day 16, Poll: when should decorations go up: 1 September, 1 October or 24 October?
- Day 17, Reel: a time-lapse of your logo traced as a stencil onto a pumpkin or paper lantern.
- Day 18, Contest: one entrant's setup in full, credited by name with their consent.
- Day 19, BTS: prepping orders or the counter, close on the small seasonal details.
- Day 20, Carousel: "Not into Halloween?" with your options for people who skip it.
- Day 21, Reel: answer your most-asked October comment in 20 seconds.
Days 22–28: Thu–Wed in 2026, Fri–Thu in 2027
- Day 22, Carousel: six favourite entries so far, each slide with alt text describing the costume.
- Day 23, BTS: the messiest corner of your workspace this week, unedited.
- Day 24, Reel: the Day 3 poll result, worn by the mascot.
- Day 25, Poll: two ideas for your 31 October post; followers pick one.
- Day 26, Carousel: three last-minute costumes from things your audience already owns.
- Day 27, Contest: final call, repeating the closing time and time zone.
- Day 28, BTS: the judging sheet, showing who judges and on what criteria.
Days 29–31: Thu–Sat in 2026, Fri–Sun in 2027
- Day 29, Reel: the judges deciding, cut to 30 seconds.
- Day 30, Carousel: the winner, credited runners-up and how the prize will reach them.
- Day 31, Reel: your own Halloween in 15 seconds, with a thank-you to everyone who entered.
The totals are 8 carousels, 8 Reels, 7 behind-the-scenes posts, 4 polls and 4 contest posts. On 1 November, a short thank-you post closes the month.
Carousel or Reel? What two engagement studies found
In a 2025 study of 1,304 Instagram posts from Gulf dental school accounts, Reels generated the highest engagement and visibility over 12 months. Yet Reels were only 17.4% of posts, against 25.8% carousels.
On Facebook, a 2026 study of 306 posts on a nutrition Facebook page found mean engagement per post rose from 5.3 to 17.7 after the page moved from 98.5% photo posts to a mix with 32.7% text-led posts and 7.7% infographics.
Neither study is about Halloween, and both measured health or education accounts. The 2026 authors did not control for day of the week or seasonality, so treat this calendar as a test of your own Reels against your carousels.
The five Halloween post formats compared
This table compares the five formats by frequency, effort and evidence. Prep times are our estimates for a one-person account, not measured figures.
| Format | Days in this plan | Prep time (estimate, Oct 2026) | What the evidence says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | 8 | 45–90 minutes | Highest engagement among 1,304 Instagram posts (2025) |
| Carousel | 8 | 30–60 minutes | 25.8% of the same 1,304 posts; engagement below Reels |
| Behind-the-scenes | 7 | 10–20 minutes | No study here; cheap filler between heavier posts |
| Poll | 4 | 5 minutes | No study here; it hands you two later posts (Days 3 and 24) |
| Costume contest | 4 | 2–3 hours of rules and judging | Platform rules apply; see the next section |
Spend production time on Reels, and let behind-the-scenes posts carry the low-effort days.
Costume contest and giveaway rules: Meta's Pages Terms and the FTC
Contest posts carry this plan's legal risk, so read current rules before Day 7. Facebook's Pages Terms (last revised 8 March 2018, still live as of October 2026) allow promotions on Pages but say personal Timelines and friend connections must not be used to run them. "Tag your friends in this post to enter" and "share on your Timeline to enter" are both named as not permitted.
The same terms require you to say you are collecting user content and to secure permission to reuse it. That is why Days 12 and 18 repost only entrants who said yes.
For US audiences, the FTC's Endorsement Guides at 16 CFR 255.5 (revised 26 July 2023, 88 FR 48102) list "the possibility of winning a prize" as a material connection that must be disclosed clearly when an audience would not expect it. If entrants post about your brand to enter, ask them to label the post as a contest entry.
A short rules post should cover these points:
- who can enter (age, country), and the entry window with a time zone
- how to enter, without any tag-a-friend or share-to-enter step on Facebook
- the prize, the judging criteria and who judges
- how and when you contact the winner, and how long they have to reply
- that you repost entries only with the entrant's permission
Rules differ by country, and this is not legal advice. Instagram and TikTok publish their own promotion rules; read the current versions on launch day.
Alt text and captions for 31 posts: what W3C guidance asks
Accessibility adds about two minutes per post when planned in. W3C's guidance on captions defines them as a text version of the speech and the non-speech audio needed to understand the content, which matters for Reels built on creaks and thunder.
The routine for every post:
- Reels: caption speech and the sounds that carry meaning, such as [door creaks] or [thunder], and do not rely on auto-captions without correcting them.
- Carousels and photos: write alt text naming the costume, the colours and any words printed on the image, in one or two sentences.
- Strobe effects: W3C's Success Criterion 2.3.1 says content should not flash more than three times in any one-second period, so cut lightning and strobe edits below that.
When a public post is the wrong tool
Thirty-one posts is too many for many solo creators. If you have under an hour a day, keep only the Reels and the contest posts (Days 4, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 21, 24, 27, 29 and 31), which still covers 12 days. A contest is also wrong for an account under a few hundred followers, because three entries make an awkward winner post.
A public feed is also the wrong channel for one person you want to reach on 31 October. The interactive Halloween card with a pumpkin to carve takes about 5 minutes, holds up to six photos and ends in a Boo License sized 1080×1920 for an Instagram Story. Its No button runs away a few times, so send it only to someone who has already said yes to you.
The premium Halloween page with a voice note takes about 10 minutes and adds a voice note up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos, an optional unlock time and a reply box. Both are one-person greeting pages in English, not a scheduling tool or a contest platform. SubhSandesh pages average 11.1 views per page created (views, not unique visitors).
