Halloween Trivia Questions With Answers Checked Against a Source
30 Halloween trivia questions and answers in five rounds, each answer checked against a named record: the 1917 trick-or-treat print, the October 2026 pumpkin record, NASA's next Halloween full moon in 2039, and six myths other quizzes repeat.

- • The earliest known print use of the trick-or-treat call is "tricks or treats" in an Ontario newspaper on 1 November 1917, a decade before the 1927 Alberta reports most quizzes cite.
- • The heaviest pumpkin record moved twice in a year: 1,278.8 kg on 6 October 2025, then 1,295.8 kg (2,856 lb 12.8 oz) on 3 October 2026, so 2023-era quiz answers are out of date.
- • No one was burned at Salem: 19 people were hanged in 1692 and Giles Corey was pressed to death.
- • The next full moon on Halloween is 31 October 2039 at 22:36 UT, which is already 1 November in India.
- • A 2024 npj Science of Learning study found high-curiosity trivia questions hurt memory for unrelated facts shown straight after, so save announcements for the gap between rounds.

Halloween Trivia Questions With Answers Checked Against a Source
These 30 Halloween trivia questions come in five rounds of six, and every answer was checked on 13 October 2026 against a named record, from a 1917 Ontario newspaper to the Guinness pumpkin ledger. The first six are myth-busters, and two more fix answers that ranking quiz lists still print out of date. SubhSandesh is a greeting-page site, not a quiz app: of the 5,199 pages people have built on it, 48.3% of views happen on a phone, so each question here is short enough to read aloud from one phone screen.
Below are the 30 questions and answers, a table comparing the rounds, and a hosting method based on 2024 memory research. The page ends with the cases where a different list will serve you better.
What makes a Halloween trivia answer trustworthy?
A Halloween trivia question is a short factual question about the holiday, its customs, creatures, books or calendar, with one checkable answer. It is trustworthy when that answer can be traced to a record a player could open, not to another quiz list.
That matters because quiz answers age. One top-ranking list still gives a 2023 pumpkin weight that has been beaten twice since, and another, updated on 2 October 2026, still anchors "trick or treat" in print to Alberta in 1927. Both are fixed below.
30 Halloween trivia questions and answers in 5 rounds
Read each question once, allow 20 seconds, then give the answer and the one-line reason. The reasons are the part that settles arguments.
1. Myth-buster round: answers other quizzes get wrong
- When did the trick-or-treat call first appear in print? In 1917, in Ontario, Canada. The Sault Daily Star printed "tricks or treats" on 1 November 1917, a decade before the 1927 Alberta reports of the exact wording that are usually quoted, per etymologist Barry Popik's dated newspaper citations.
- How many people were burned at the stake in the Salem witch trials of 1692? None. Nineteen were hanged, fourteen women and five men, and Giles Corey was pressed to death with stones for refusing to enter a plea.
- Is the "daddy-longlegs" a deadly spider whose fangs are too short to bite you? No. The name is used for harvestmen, crane flies and cellar spiders, and none of them carries super-powerful venom, according to the Burke Museum's spider myths pages.
- Does the average person swallow spiders in their sleep? No. The Burke Museum's spider specialist says there are no specimens and no eyewitness accounts behind the claim.
- Do female black widows always eat their mates? No. In most species that has been seen only in cages, never in the wild.
- How many bat species feed on blood? Three. All three are vampire bats of the Americas, and they are the only mammals that live on blood alone.
2. Pumpkins by the numbers
- What is the heaviest pumpkin ever recorded? "Bagheera", at 1,295.8 kg (2,856 lb 12.8 oz), grown by Ian Paton and weighed in Wargrave, Berkshire, UK, on 3 October 2026, per Guinness World Records. Correct as of 13 October 2026.
- Whose record did Bagheera beat? Paton's own: "Muggle", 1,278.8 kg, grown with his twin brother Stuart and weighed on 6 October 2025.
- Which US state grows the most pumpkins? Illinois, with about 533 million pounds in 2025, slightly more than the next four states combined, per the USDA Economic Research Service.
- Roughly how many pounds of pumpkins did the United States grow in 2025? About 1.47 billion pounds.
- What are most Illinois pumpkins grown for? Processing into purée and pie filling: nearly 70% of Illinois pumpkin acreage in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, while about 85% of US acreage overall grew fresh and decorative pumpkins.
- How many pounds of pumpkin were available per American in 2025? 5.2 pounds, against a 2022 to 2025 average of about 6.
3. Books before the films
- In what year was Frankenstein first published? 1818, by Mary Shelley; Project Gutenberg hosts the 1818 text.
- Is Frankenstein the monster? No. Victor Frankenstein is the student who builds the creature, and the creature is never given a name.
- At which university does Victor study? Ingolstadt, where he is sent at seventeen.
- What is the name of the ship that carries Dracula's boxes of earth to England? The Demeter, a Russian schooner from Varna, in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel.
- What is found beside Ichabod Crane's hat in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? A shattered pumpkin.
- Whose ghost is the Headless Horseman said to be? A Hessian trooper whose head was carried away by a cannonball in the Revolutionary War, as Washington Irving tells it.
4. Calendar and sky
- What day of the week is Halloween in 2026 and in 2027? Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
- When did a full moon last fall on Halloween? 31 October 2020, at 14:49 Universal Time, per NASA's moon-phase tables.
- When is the next full moon on Halloween? 31 October 2039, at 22:36 UT. In India that is 04:06 IST on 1 November, so Indian players can argue it misses.
- In which year did Harry Houdini die on Halloween? 1926. He died on 31 October in Detroit.
- What does the UK mark with bonfires on 5 November? The arrest of Guy Fawkes on 5 November 1605, guarding gunpowder beneath the House of Lords.
- Which Mexican festival, held from the end of October into early November, welcomes dead relatives home? Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.
5. Creatures and customs
- Do garden spiders move indoors when autumn arrives? No. Outdoor spiders cannot survive indoors; the ones in your house are separate species, called house spiders.
- Do two red marks on the skin prove a spider bite? No. Real spider fang punctures are hardly ever visible to the naked eye.
- Where does the common vampire bat live? From Mexico to Argentina and Chile, in warm climates only.
- In which year did UNESCO inscribe Mexico's Day of the Dead on its heritage list? 2008, after first proclaiming it in 2003, per the UNESCO listing.
- Which crop's yearly cycle ends around the Day of the Dead? Maize, Mexico's main food crop.
- What do families lay from the cemetery to the house to guide souls home? Flower petals, candles and offerings.
The 5 rounds compared
The table compares the rounds by size, where the answers were checked, and who they suit. It is the quickest way to pick two rounds for a short game.
| Round | Questions | Answers checked against | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myth-busters | 6 | 1917 newspaper citations, Burke Museum | Adults who think they know Halloween |
| Pumpkins by the numbers | 6 | Guinness (3 Oct 2026), USDA (2025 crop) | Mixed ages; numbers invite close guesses |
| Books before the films | 6 | Project Gutenberg texts of Shelley, Stoker and Irving | Readers and teenagers |
| Calendar and sky | 6 | NASA moon tables (2001 to 2100) | Groups across time zones |
| Creatures and customs | 6 | UNESCO (2008), museum and zoology records | Families with children over 8 |
The takeaway: the myth-buster and pumpkin rounds produce the most arguments, so run them first while the room is fresh. Save the calendar round for last, when a time-zone debate is welcome.
How to host it so the answers stick
Let each answer land before you say anything else. In three versions of a 2024 experiment in npj Science of Learning, people remembered unrelated school facts worse when those facts came straight after a trivia question that had made them highly curious.
So keep announcements, scores and snack calls for the gap between rounds, not between questions. For the myth-buster round, ask teams to bet 1, 2 or 3 points on how sure they are; a confident wrong answer about Salem gets the loudest groan and the longest memory.
- Budget about a minute per question including the reason: two rounds take roughly 12 minutes and all five roughly 30 (our estimate).
- Keep the reasons short: one sentence, then the next question.
After the quiz: one Halloween page for one person
The quiz is for the room. SubhSandesh's two Halloween templates are for one person, and neither runs a quiz, scores teams or invites guests. Pages built on the platform average 11.1 views each, which suggests people reopen a personal page in a way they never reopen a score sheet.
For the friend who won, or the one who could not come, the interactive Halloween card with up to six photos takes about 5 minutes. They knock three times, carve a pumpkin until your word glows and read your letter by flashlight.
If it is your partner and you want more, the cinematic Halloween website with a 60-second voice note takes about 10 minutes, holds up to 12 photos, can stay locked until a time you set, and has a reply box for one answer of up to 280 characters. For anything that is not Halloween, the full template gallery lists every other page type.
When this list is the wrong choice
Thirty questions is deliberate, but some games need more. A ten-round league night needs a longer bank, checked the same way.
- Film night: none of the 30 questions is about a film, so a movie crowd needs a film-only set.
- Young children: questions 2, 22 and 23 mention executions and death; drop them for under-8s.
- Non-US groups: the USDA questions use 2025 US figures only, not UK, Indian or Australian harvests.
- Records move: the pumpkin record changed on 6 October 2025 and again on 3 October 2026, so re-check question 7 before each October.
A printed sheet also beats any link when players have no phone. A SubhSandesh page is the wrong tool for the group itself, because it greets one person and has an English-only interface.
