- • Instagram's Help Center now allows up to 5 hashtags on a post, and the same cap applies to comments, so the first-comment trick no longer adds more.
- • Instagram publishes no character count for where a caption folds behind "more"; this page keeps each wish under 80 characters, most under 70.
- • In a 2023 study of about 900 public library posts, no library in the initial sample added alt text to its Instagram images, and automatic alt text called one poster "may be an image of text".
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh's shared-page views come from a phone, so the first line of any greeting does most of the work.

Halloween Wishes for Instagram, Sorted by the Post You Are Making
The best Halloween wishes for Instagram are short enough to read before the caption folds, written for the post they sit under, and paired with at most five hashtags, the limit in Instagram's own Help Center. Small screens decide how much shows: on SubhSandesh's own shared greeting pages, 48.3% of views come from a phone and each page averages 11.1 views. Below are 42 original wishes by post type, then lengths, hashtags, alt text, and when a public post is the wrong way to wish someone.
What makes a Halloween wish work on Instagram?
A Halloween wish for Instagram is a one-line greeting written to sit under a feed post, where it competes with the photo, your username and the "more" fold. Instagram's developer reference for publishing media caps a caption at 2,200 characters, but little of that shows without a tap.
Instagram does not publish where the feed cuts a caption off; neither the Help Center nor the developer documentation gives a figure, and the fold moves with screen width and username length. The 70-character target used here is a working rule, not an Instagram number.
42 original Halloween wishes for Instagram, by post type
Every line was written for this page. Each runs under 80 characters, so hashtags can follow on a new line.
1. Single photo posts
Wish first, costume or place on line two. Aim for under 70 characters.
- Wishing you a Halloween with more treats than tricks, and both on time.
- Happy Halloween from one carved pumpkin to your whole feed.
- Lit the lantern, made a wish: a cosy, candle-bright Halloween for you.
- Happy Halloween. May your sweets bowl outlast the doorbell.
- Here's to a Halloween night that's spooky outside and warm inside.
- Dressed up, lit up and wishing you a very happy Halloween.
2. Carousel first slide and last slide
The opener earns the swipe; the closer lands the wish. Keep the first under 60 characters.
- First slide: Swipe for proof I took this costume far too seriously. Happy Halloween!
- First slide: Happy Halloween! Slide one is the plan. The last slide is what happened.
- First slide: Happy Halloween, from every angle of this costume.
- Last slide: Made it to the end? Your treat: my warmest Halloween wishes.
- Last slide: Last slide, last candle: happy Halloween, everyone.
- Last slide: That's the whole haunt. Wishing you a sweet one tonight.
3. Reel cover text
Cover text is read on a small grid tile, so use two to five words. Put the full wish in the caption.
- Happy Halloween, from us
- One night, all the boos
- Our Halloween in 30 seconds
- Wait for the ghost
- Carving night, uncut
- Treats first, tricks later
4. Couple posts
A couple post is a note to one person that everyone else reads. Save anything private for a message only they see.
- Happy Halloween to the only person I'd share my last toffee with.
- Two costumes, one plan: grow old and keep dressing up. Happy Halloween.
- My favourite scare is still how lucky I got. Happy Halloween, love.
- Same couch, new costumes, still my favourite boo. Happy Halloween.
- Wishing my person a Halloween as sweet as the bowl they keep raiding.
- You picked the costumes, I picked you. Happy Halloween.
5. Friends group posts
Name something the whole group lived through. Tag people rather than naming them.
- Happy Halloween to the group chat that finally left the group chat.
- Five costumes, zero coordination, one great night. Happy Halloween, crew.
- Wishing my favourite ghouls a loud, late, laugh-till-it-hurts Halloween.
- If found wandering in capes, return to this group. Happy Halloween.
- Every year, same faces under new masks. Happy Halloween, you lot.
- Six people, one bag of sweets, friendship tested. Happy Halloween.
6. Family and kids posts
Family posts reach grandparents and old school friends too. Think twice before naming a child or their school in a public caption.
- Happy Halloween from our littlest pumpkin and their very tired helpers.
- Wishing every small trick-or-treater safe steps and full buckets.
- Three generations, one pumpkin, a lot of glue. Happy Halloween from us.
- Our tiny ghost says boo. We say happy Halloween.
- Requested: a friendly dragon. Delivered. Happy Halloween from all of us.
- Wishing your family a cosy, sweet-sharing, early-to-bed Halloween.
7. Wishing all my followers
The brand-free version, for a personal account. Write it the way you would say it out loud.
- Wishing everyone who scrolls past this a calm, cosy Halloween.
- To everyone on this feed: may tonight be fun-scary, never real-scary.
- Wherever you are reading this, happy Halloween from my corner of the internet.
- Thank you for a year of comments and kindness. Happy Halloween, all.
- Happy Halloween to the quiet followers too. I see your likes.
- Celebrating or just eating the sweets, happy Halloween either way.
Wish length and hashtags by post type
The lengths below are this page's working rule, since Instagram publishes no fold position. The ceiling of 5 hashtags is Instagram's own.
| Post type | Ideal wish length | Hashtags | Example from this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single photo | Under 70 characters | 3 to 5 | "Happy Halloween. May your sweets bowl outlast the doorbell." |
| Carousel | Opener under 60 characters; closer under 80 | 3 to 5 | "Happy Halloween, from every angle of this costume." |
| Reel cover | 2 to 5 words; full wish in the caption | 3 to 5 | "Treats first, tricks later" |
| Couple, friends or family | Under 75 characters, then tags | 2 to 4 | "You picked the costumes, I picked you. Happy Halloween." |
| All my followers | Under 80 characters | 1 to 3 | "Happy Halloween to the quiet followers too. I see your likes." |
The more personal the post, the fewer hashtags it needs. The people you want to reach already follow you.
How many hashtags can a Halloween Instagram post have? Five
Instagram's Help Center page on hashtags says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that going over 5 stops the comment from posting. The page applies the same limit to comments, so moving extras into the first comment is not a workaround.
One wrinkle: Meta's developer reference for publishing still lists 30 hashtags for captions sent through its API. If you post from the app, follow the Help Center figure of five.
- One broad tag, such as #halloween.
- One for the post type, such as #pumpkincarving.
- One for your city or community.
- One you reuse for your group or family.
- One spare, or none.
The same page notes that posts from private accounts do not appear publicly on hashtag pages. On a private account, hashtags are decoration rather than reach.
Alt text for Halloween photos: what Instagram's automatic version misses
Alt text is the description a screen reader speaks in place of your photo. Instagram's Help Center guide to editing alt text says automatic alt text uses object recognition, that you can replace it, and that the box sits under Accessibility before you share or after you tap Edit.
The automatic version is often poor. In a 2023 study of about 900 Ontario public library posts across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, Hill and Oswald found no library in their initial sample added alt text to its Instagram images. The fallback described one contest poster only as "may be an image of text".
That matters at Halloween, when so many posts put the wish inside the image. Say what is there in one sentence:
- "Two friends dressed as a ghost and a black cat, holding a carved pumpkin on a doorstep."
- "A slide reading 'Happy Halloween from all of us' over a photo of paper bats."
Why a costume selfie caption should point outward
In a 2026 PLOS ONE study by Desjarlais, 125 undergraduates were told a selfie, an "elsie" (a photo taken by someone else) or a meme had been posted to Instagram, then shown fabricated feedback. 71% of the explanations given for feedback on selfies and elsies pointed at the poster, often their looks, while every explanation for meme feedback pointed outward, mostly at the audience.
The study did not test captions, so this is an inference, not a finding. A line addressed to your followers shifts the post from "rate my costume" to "here is something for you", which is why every wish above speaks to someone.
When an Instagram post is the wrong way to wish someone
A feed post is a broadcast, and the wrong tool for one person who deserves more than a line among your other posts. People are private about these moments: on SubhSandesh, 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it.
For that person, the interactive Halloween card with photos and music takes their name and yours, a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin, sent as a private link by Instagram DM, WhatsApp or text. They knock three times, carve a jack-o'-lantern until your word glows, read your letter by flashlight and answer "Will you be my boo?". It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes, and you get an email the first time they answer.
It ends with a Boo License, a 1080×1920 card in Instagram Story size they can download as a PNG. The public moment can still happen, on their Story, after the private one.
For a voice note of up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos or a 3,000-character letter, the premium Halloween page adds those plus an optional unlock time. Both are one-person greetings with an English interface, not a way to wish 400 followers or invite a group to a party; for the crowd, the free wishes above are the better tool.
