Happy Diwali Images: Make or Find Ones You Can Legally Share
A text page can't host a Diwali gallery, so this one does the useful part: which images Indian copyright law and Creative Commons let you forward, why WhatsApp blurs them, and six original Diwali images you can make yourself before 29 October 2027.

- • Copyright in India is automatic: a Diwali image saved from a search page belongs to whoever made it, watermark or not.
- • Creative Commons licences pre-approve reuse; NC rules out a shop's post and ND rules out adding your own text on top.
- • WhatsApp compresses photos by default; HD quality is a per-send or settings choice and is not available for Status, as of October 2026.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh shared pages are opened on a phone, so design Diwali images upright at 1080 × 1920.
- • Six home-made Diwali images take 5 to 20 minutes each and are your own copyright as the photographer.

Happy Diwali Images: Make or Find Ones You Can Legally Share
The happy Diwali images worth sending are the ones you made yourself, or the ones whose licence you actually read before forwarding. Under India's Copyright Act a photograph or drawing is protected the moment it exists, with no registration, so a picture saved from a search page still belongs to whoever shot or drew it. Make it for a phone screen: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views, measured September 2026), and a page is viewed 11.1 times on average, so whatever you send is looked at more than once.
A text page cannot host a gallery, so this one covers what the law and Creative Commons let you forward, why WhatsApp blurs images, and six originals to make before Diwali on Friday 29 October 2027.
What makes a Diwali image yours to forward under Indian law
The Hand Book of Copyright Law from India's Copyright Office defines an artistic work as a painting, drawing or photograph "whether or not any such work possesses artistic quality". A quick diya graphic made in a phone app is therefore protected exactly like a gallery print, and the handbook names the photographer as the author of a photograph. The same handbook states that "acquisition of copyright is automatic", so a missing © sign or watermark tells you nothing.
The exemptions it lists are narrow: research or private study, criticism or review, reporting current events, judicial proceedings and a handful of others. Pasting your name over an illustrator's greeting and sending it to 150 contacts is none of those. The handbook puts the minimum punishment for criminal infringement under Section 63 at six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000, which matters most to a shop or a brand page posting someone else's artwork as its own greeting.
Three questions settle almost every case. Ask them before you press send:
- Who made this image, and can I see their name?
- Does the page it came from state a licence?
- Am I sending it as a person, or posting it for a business?
How to read a Creative Commons licence on a Diwali image
A Creative Commons (CC) licence is a creator's advance permission: you may reuse the image without asking, on the conditions printed in its short code. A 2025 practical guide by Himel Mondal of AIIMS Deoghar, published in the Journal of Clinical Imaging Science, lays out the range from CC BY, which allows reuse with attribution, to CC BY-NC-ND, which prohibits commercial use and derivative works. A CC0 work sits in the public domain and can be used without attribution.
The CC BY-NC 4.0 deed shows what "attribution" means in practice: give appropriate credit, link to the licence, and indicate if changes were made. NC rules out a shop's Diwali post, because that is a commercial purpose. ND is the one people trip on: adding "Happy Diwali from the Sharmas" across the top creates an adapted version, which in our reading is exactly what a no-derivatives licence withholds.
The deed also warns that a licence "may not give you all of the permissions necessary", naming publicity, privacy and moral rights. Mondal's guide gives the four parts of a clean credit, title, author, source and licence, which fit on one line:
"Diyas on the Ghat" by [creator's name], via [site], CC BY 4.0. Cropped, text added.
Why your Diwali image looks blurred on WhatsApp, and the settings that help
WhatsApp says it plainly on its help page on sending media: media files are usually compressed when shared, so quality "might be lower than the original version". The same page caps a Document attachment at 2 GB and lets you pick up to 100 Gallery images at once.
Its page on HD photos and videos gives the fix and its limits. As of October 2026 they are:
- Tap the HD Media icon before sending and choose HD quality, or set it once in Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality.
- HD is not available for status updates or profile pictures.
- You cannot upgrade a photo already sent; resend it in HD.
- Your internet connection affects quality even when HD is chosen.
How much detail survives the trip? A 2026 study in Oral Radiology by Jardim and colleagues sent 121 panoramic X-rays, each a JPG of 2864 × 1348 pixels and about 1.16 MB, over WhatsApp. Examiners reading them on their own phones were correct in 85.1% of cases, against 86.5% on a computer monitor, with no statistically significant difference. Our inference: a sharp image of around a megabyte is plenty.
Six original Diwali images you can make before 29 October 2027
Each idea gives the shot, who it suits, what you need and the time, in that order. Each is your own copyright, because the handbook names the photographer as the author of a photograph. Hold the phone upright so a 9:16 frame fills the screen.
1. The first diya at your own door
Shoot one lit clay diya on your threshold at dusk, phone at floor level so the doorframe rises behind the flame. It suits parents and grandparents, who know that door better than any stock photo. You need one diya, oil, a wick and a swept step. Allow 10 minutes around sunset.
2. Their initial, laid out in tealights
Arrange 12 to 16 tealights in the first letter of the recipient's name on a dark floor and shoot straight down from a chair. It suits a partner, a child or a best friend, because only one person reads it as theirs. You need tealights, a lighter and a dark sheet. Allow 20 minutes.
3. An opened mithai box with a handwritten tag
Open a box of sweets, lay a handwritten tag on top, and shoot from directly above in daylight. It suits friends and colleagues who will get the real box later. You need the box, a strip of card and a dark pen. Allow 5 minutes. One line that fits on a tag:
Half of this box is already missing. The other half is yours.
4. Hands lighting wicks, faces out of frame
Photograph only hands: an elder's hand steadying a diya, a child's hand holding the match. It suits the society group and the office, because nobody in it is identifiable. You need one helper, window light and a plate of diyas. Allow 10 minutes, and ask the helper before sending it.
5. A typographic card in two scripts
Set one line on a plain dark background in any phone editor at 1080 × 1920 pixels, the Instagram Story size. It suits WhatsApp Status, where HD is unavailable, so large type survives compression better than fine detail. You need nothing but the phone. Allow 15 minutes. Two original lines, in Devanagari, Roman and English:
- शुभ दीपावली, घर के हर कोने तक रोशनी पहुँचे — Shubh Deepavali, ghar ke har kone tak roshni pahunche — "Happy Diwali; may the light reach every corner of the house."
- दीया आपका, उजाला हम सबका — Diya aapka, ujaala hum sabka — "Your lamp, and light for all of us."
6. Last year's doorstep beside this year's
Put your own photo from Diwali 2026 (Sunday 8 November) beside the same spot on 29 October 2027, as a split frame. It suits someone away from home this year. You need both photos, both taken by you, and any collage tool. Allow 10 minutes.
Forwarded, licensed, home-made or a page: how the options compare
This table compares four ways to send a Diwali greeting by rights, transit and what we can measure. Values are as of October 2026.
| Option | Who holds the rights | What happens in transit | SubhSandesh measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image saved from a search page | Its creator; copyright is automatic | Compressed in standard quality; HD not on Status | None; we do not measure images |
| CC-licensed image | Its creator; licence sets credit, NC and ND terms | Same as above | None |
| Your own photo | You, as the photographer | Same; resend in HD if it looks soft | None |
| A personal Diwali page link | You, for your words and photos | A link, opened in a browser | 48.3% of views on a phone; 11.1 views per page; 38.5% password-protected |
Only the page row has data, and it is platform-wide. The Diwali template is new and has no usage history yet.
When a Diwali image beats a SubhSandesh page, and when it does not
An image wins whenever the audience is wide. For a 150-person family group or a WhatsApp Status, send a home-made image from the list above; a personal page for each person would take hours. An image also wins for an elder who opens photos but never taps a link.
A page earns its place for one person. SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card opens on a diya waiting at their door with a tag from you, then a row of diyas that each lift one of your wishes, a rangoli that glows with your initials, sky lanterns holding up to six of your photos, and a letter in a red-and-gold shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes, opens in any browser with no app or account, and the closing Shubh Deepavali card saves as a 1080 × 1920 image, so the recipient keeps an image too. If you want that for one person, build the interactive Diwali card on SubhSandesh; 38.5% of creators across the platform password-protect their page, which suits family photos.
If you already have one photograph that matters more than any greeting, The Last Piece photo jigsaw turns it into a puzzle where each piece placed reveals a line of your letter. It is not a Diwali template, so the festival lives only in what you write.
