Happy Halloween Images with Quotes: Sizes, Text and Licences
How to make happy Halloween images with quotes that stay readable on a phone: the canvas each app expects, text size and 4.5:1 contrast, which Creative Commons licences allow a text overlay, alt text, and 30 original quotes sized to fit.

- • Design vertical quote images at 1080 × 1920 (9:16) and feed images at 1080 × 1350 (4:5); Meta caps both at 8 MB.
- • 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so set quote text at 72–96 px on a 1080-pixel canvas, never below about 60 px.
- • WCAG 2.2 asks for 4.5:1 contrast for text and images of text, 3:1 for large text; a dark band behind the words is the reliable fix.
- • Creative Commons ND licences forbid adaptations, so a quote overlay is only allowed on CC BY, BY-SA and (non-commercially) NC photos.
- • Only 0.1% of image tweets in a 9-million-tweet sample carried a description; for a quote image, the alt text is the quote itself.

Happy Halloween Images with Quotes: Sizes, Text and Licences
Happy Halloween images with quotes work when they are phone-shaped: 1080 pixels wide, one short original line, and text with enough contrast to read at a glance. That matters because 48.3% of shared pages on SubhSandesh are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views), and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so whatever you send gets read small, and more than once.
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027. This page covers canvas sizes per app, text size and contrast, 30 original quotes that fit, stock-photo licences, and alt text.
What is a Halloween quote image?
A Halloween quote image is a single picture that carries a short line of text over a background, made to be posted or forwarded instead of typed. Unlike a caption, the words are baked into the pixels, so the app cannot resize them and a screen reader cannot read them unless you add alt text.
That trade-off shapes every rule below. It will mostly be seen small: 48.4% of SubhSandesh views come from a touch device.
Halloween image sizes by platform, and how big the text must be
Meta's Instagram publishing specification, updated 28 September 2026, sets the feed limits: JPEG, 8 MB maximum, an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1, and a width of 320 to 1,440 pixels. Story images carry the same 8 MB cap, with 9:16 recommended "to avoid cropping or blank space". The table compares the four canvases a quote image usually lands on.
| Where it goes | Canvas to design | Shape and limit | What happens to your text |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed post | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5, JPEG, 8 MB max | Full width; the tallest shape the feed accepts |
| Instagram Story or WhatsApp Status | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16, 8 MB max on Instagram | Name and reply bars cover the edges |
| WhatsApp chat | 1080 × 1350 px | Standard 1600 × 1052 vs HD 4096 × 2692, reported August 2023 | Standard recompresses; thin fonts blur first |
| Boo License from the Halloween card | 1080 × 1920 px | PNG download | Their photo, costume and your reason, laid out |
Design once at 1080 × 1920 for anything vertical and once at 1080 × 1350 for the rest; a square leaves a fifth of a 4:5 feed slot empty. TechRadar's WhatsApp report of 17 August 2023 showed the HD button offering 4096 × 2692 against 1600 × 1052 for Standard, so tap HD for fine lettering.
Text size is where most quote images fail. The W3C's WCAG 2.2 contrast rule asks for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 between text and background, or 3:1 for large text, which it pegs at 18 point, or 14 point bold, and it names "images of text" explicitly.
Now the pixel maths. A phone about 390 points wide shows a 1080-pixel image at roughly 36% scale, so a letter meant to read like 24 px on screen needs about 66 px on the canvas. We set quote text at 72 to 96 px and never below 60; at 80 px, with 90 px side margins, one line holds about 20 to 22 characters.
Busy photos are the other trap. A 2022 eye-tracking study in the Journal of Vision (Yu, Shamsi and Kwon, 14 adults) found that as text contrast fell towards 2.6% and blur rose, fixations lengthened and reading slowed, while background brightness alone (1.3 to 265 cd/m²) made no significant difference. A dark photo is fine; a faint letterform is not, so put a solid band or 60% dark overlay behind the words.
30 original Halloween quotes written to fit an image
Every line below is original, and each group is sized to a canvas from the table: Story lines run 3 to 8 words, feed lines up to 12. None quote a film, a song or a book.
1. Story and Status quotes (9:16, 3 to 8 words)
Who it suits: anyone posting to a 24-hour Story or Status. Canvas and type: 1080 × 1920, two or three stacked lines in the upper third, 80 to 96 px.
- Lights low. Candles lit. Hello, 31 October.
- The moon is working overtime tonight.
- Tonight the porch light means yes.
- Even the shadows dressed up.
- One night a year, everyone is someone else.
- Pumpkin glowing, plans unknown, mood excellent.
2. Feed post quotes (4:5, up to 12 words)
Who it suits: a costume photo, a porch shot or a carousel cover. Canvas and type: 1080 × 1350, one or two lines on a dark band across the bottom fifth, 64 to 80 px.
- The candy bowl is full, and I take no responsibility for it.
- Carved it crooked on purpose. It has character.
- The leaves gave up and the ghosts showed up.
- A street full of strangers in disguise, and all of them smiling.
- If the cat looks judgemental, the costume is working.
- Trick accepted. Treat still expected.
3. WhatsApp chat quotes with a name slot
Who it suits: a one-to-one forward to a friend or relative. Canvas and type: 1080 × 1350, the line at 64 px with their name set larger in the middle, so it looks made for them.
- [Name], you are the best treat in the whole neighbourhood.
- Saving you the last mini chocolate, [Name]. Tell no one.
- [Name], happy Halloween from the least scary person you know.
- No costume needed, [Name]. You were always this much fun.
- [Name], wishing you a heavy sweet bag and an early night.
- From our porch to yours, [Name]: happy Halloween.
4. Kid-safe quotes for family groups
Who it suits: family groups with children and grandparents in them. Canvas and type: 1080 × 1350, round fonts in pale orange on deep purple, nothing dripping, 72 px or larger.
- Little ghost, big smile, sticky fingers.
- Our tiny pumpkin is out collecting smiles.
- Boo just means hello in ghost.
- Sweets counted twice, teeth brushed once.
- Grandma, the witch hat was your idea.
- Two small skeletons, one shared bag, zero fights so far.
5. Couple quotes for one person
Who it suits: a partner, on an image sent to them alone rather than posted. Canvas and type: 1080 × 1920, one centred line on a soft dark background, 88 px.
- Every ghost in town is jealous of us.
- You are my favourite thing about the dark.
- Still choosing you, costume and all.
- Two pumpkins, one porch, no plans to leave.
- You make the candles look dim.
- Haunt me forever. I have cleared my schedule.
Can you put a quote on a stock Halloween photo?
Only if the photo's licence allows changes. Of the six Creative Commons licences, the two marked ND permit sharing "in unadapted form only", and typing a quote across a picture adapts it. The two marked SA allow changes but require you to share the result under the same or a compatible licence.
- CC BY and CC BY-SA: add your quote and credit the photographer in the caption.
- CC BY-NC and CC BY-NC-SA: a personal post to friends, not a shop or brand page, because NC rules out use "primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage".
- CC BY-ND and CC BY-NC-ND: no quote overlays at all.
- No licence shown, as with most image-search results: treat it as all rights reserved and leave it.
The safest background is your own photo of a porch light or a carved pumpkin. Nobody else will post the same picture.
Alt text for a quote image: type the quote in
When the words live inside the pixels, a screen reader user hears nothing unless you write them out. A 2020 comment in Nature Communications by Chiarella, Yarbrough and Jackson cites a sample of more than nine million tweets in which 11.84% carried an image and only 0.1% of those images had a description. Their advice: skip "photo of", keep it short, and keep links out.
For a quote image, the alt text is the quote word for word, then a few words on the picture: "Text: Every ghost in town is jealous of us. Over a dim porch with two pumpkins." Meta's specification added alt text for image posts on 24 March 2025 but lists Reels and Stories as unsupported.
From a quote image to a Halloween page for one person
If your line is meant for one person, the interactive Happy Halloween card takes about 5 minutes: up to six photos, your letter read by flashlight, a pumpkin carved with your word, and "Will you be my boo?" at the end. It finishes with a Boo License, a 1080 × 1920 PNG at Instagram Story size with their photo, the costume you chose for them and "Valid every 31 October, forever", so the shareable image comes built in.
For more room, the premium Halloween page with a voice note takes about 10 minutes: up to 12 photos, a 60-second voice note, an unlock time and a reply box. Both have partner, bestie, family and kids modes, and 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators add a password before sharing. If Halloween is not their thing, the full template gallery covers other occasions.
When a quote image is the wrong choice
An image is the wrong format for a long message. Past about 12 words the type has to drop below the 60 px floor, and the line stops being readable on a phone. It also shuts out screen reader users if the alt text is skipped, and a Story disappears after 24 hours.
The SubhSandesh templates have limits too: the interface is English-only, and they are one-person greeting pages, not party invitations. For a family group of 30, a plain quote image in the chat is the better tool.
