Kali Puja 2027: Thursday Night, a Day Before Lakshmi Puja
Kali Puja 2027 falls on Thursday 28 October 2027, one night before Diwali's Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October. Amavasya, the new-moon tithi, begins at about 8:48 PM IST on Thursday and ends at about 7:06 PM on Friday, so only Thursday has the new moon at midnight, and Kolkata's nishita window for the puja runs from 10:55 to 11:45 PM.
If you are greeting someone in Bengal from far away, the message will probably be read on a small screen: 48.3% of the 57,456 recorded views of shared SubhSandesh pages came from a phone. Our nearest festival data is Raksha Bandhan 2026, a different festival with only 89 pages, and 49.4% of those were built on the festival day itself. Below are nishita times for five cities, why Bhoot Chaturdashi shares the same evening, the night's sequence, and dictionary-checked Bengali words.
What is Kali Puja, and why is 2027's on Thursday 28 October?
Kali Puja, also called Shyama Puja (শ্যামা পূজা, śyāmā pūjā), is the night worship of the goddess Kali on the Kartik new moon, kept mainly in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Odisha. Bengalis also call that night দীপান্বিতা (dīpānbitā), which the Samsad Bengali-English dictionary defines as "the day of the new moon in the month of Kartik when Goddess Kali is worshipped", with houses lit by rows of lamps.
The two pujas follow different clocks. Lakshmi Puja needs Amavasya during pradosh, the hours just after sunset, while Kali Puja needs Amavasya at nishita, the eighth of the fifteen equal parts of the night. In 2027 Amavasya starts too late on Thursday for pradosh but is well under way by midnight, and it ends at about 7:06 PM on Friday, long before Friday's midnight.
Kali Puja 2027 in Kolkata, set against 2026
We computed these with the open-source Astronomy Engine library, which its author describes as accurate to within ±1 arcminute and tested against NOVAS and JPL Horizons. Nishita is sunset plus seven to eight fifteenths of the night until sunrise, and Drik Panchang's pages for Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar and New Delhi, used only as a date reference, agree to within one minute.
| Night | Date | What the rule needs | Kolkata window (IST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bhoot Chaturdashi 2027 | Thu 28 Oct | Chaturdashi at dusk, until 8:49 PM | Lamps from 5:01 PM sunset |
| Kali Puja 2027 | Thu 28 Oct | Amavasya at midnight, from 8:49 PM | Nishita 10:55 to 11:45 PM |
| Lakshmi Puja 2027 | Fri 29 Oct | Amavasya in pradosh, until about 7:06 PM | 5:01 PM sunset to about 7:06 PM |
| Kali Puja 2026 | Sun 8 Nov | Amavasya at midnight | Nishita 10:54 to 11:46 PM |
| Lakshmi Puja 2026 | Sun 8 Nov | Amavasya in pradosh | From 4:55 PM sunset |
The takeaway is that 2027 stacks three observances into about 26 hours, where 2026 gave Kali and Lakshmi one shared Sunday. Elsewhere the 2027 nishita lasts about 50 minutes too, opening earlier the further east the sun sets:
- Guwahati: 10:41 to 11:32 PM
- Agartala: 10:43 to 11:34 PM
- Bhubaneswar: 11:05 to 11:55 PM
- New Delhi: 11:39 PM to 12:30 AM
Bhoot Chaturdashi shares the same Thursday evening in 2027
Bhoot Chaturdashi (ভূত চতুর্দশী, bhūta caturdaśī) is the Chaturdashi evening before Kali Puja. The dictionary gives ভূত as a ghost or spirit and চতুর্দশী as the fourteenth day of a lunar fortnight, and many Bengali homes mark it with চৌদ্দ প্রদীপ (caudda pradīpa), fourteen lamps for the ancestors, and a dish of চৌদ্দ শাক (caudda śāka), fourteen leafy greens.
In 2027 Chaturdashi runs from 10:50 PM on Wednesday 27 October to 8:49 PM on Thursday 28 October by our computation. Thursday's sunset at 5:01 PM in Kolkata therefore falls inside Chaturdashi, so the fourteen lamps and the Kali Puja belong to one evening, about four hours apart.
In 2026 the two were separate evenings, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November. If a household tradition keeps the greens for lunch, 2027 puts that lunch on Thursday too; check your own panjika before planning, since family practice varies.
The night, hour by hour, on 28 October 2027
This is the general shape of a household or para (neighbourhood) Kali Puja in Bengal; families differ, and your own priest's vidhi comes first. Each step gives the Kolkata time, what happens and the Bengali word.
1. 5:01 PM: lamps at dusk
At Kolkata sunset the house is lit, starting with the fourteen Bhoot Chaturdashi lamps at doors and dark corners. The dictionary gives প্রদীপ (pradīpa) as a lamp and প্রদীপন as the lighting of lamps.
2. 8:48 PM: Amavasya begins
Around 8:48 PM IST the new-moon tithi starts and the night becomes দীপান্বিতা proper. Pandals finish dressing the image, the প্রতিমা (pratimā), usually a clay figure of Kali standing on Shiva. Red hibiscus, জবা (jabā), which the dictionary defines as a red species of China rose, is strung into garlands for the goddess.
3. 10:55 PM: the nishita puja
In Kolkata the main worship falls between 10:55 and 11:45 PM, the 50-minute nishita window. The priest offers flowers, lamps and food to the image while the family keeps the fast that many observe until the puja ends. Our honest advice is to send nothing during these 50 minutes; nobody in the room is looking at a phone.
4. After midnight: songs to Shyama
Late in the night many households and pandals sing Shyama sangeet, devotional songs to Kali, most famously by the 18th-century poet Ramprasad Sen. The prasad is shared, and the image stays until its বিসর্জন (bisarjana), the immersion, on a later day set by each puja committee.
Ramprasad's songs and what two old books say about the night
Two public-domain books show how long this night has had its shape. Edward Thompson and Arthur Spencer's 1923 Bengali Religious Lyrics, Śākta, published in Calcutta and by Oxford University Press, notes that after Vijaya "on the next new moon night, the Kali-puja is held", with Durga tied to the bright half of the moon and Kali to the dark.
The same volume admits that "a scholarly edition of Ramprasad is badly wanted" and builds its selection mostly from his songs, glossing Syama as "the Dark Goddess". Sister Nivedita's 1900 essay collection Kali the Mother calls his output "a collection of folk-songs, full of the sentiment of Kali-worship, left to the memories of his people", many unrecorded in Bengal's villages.
Both were written by outsiders to Bengali devotion. We cite them for what they record, not as the last word.
Is 28 October 2027 a holiday in Bengal?
Not yet confirmed for state offices. The Department of Personnel and Training's 2027 holiday order for central government offices lists Diwali on Friday 29 October 2027, and its paragraph 6 lets central offices move that holiday to Naraka Chaturdasi where a state declares only that day. Its restricted list already carries Naraka Chaturdasi on Thursday 28 October.
West Bengal's own 2027 list was not on the state's holiday page when we checked on 22 October 2026, which showed lists up to 2026. Until it appears, plan travel to Kolkata for Thursday 28 October as a possible working day.
Bengali words for Kali Puja 2027, dictionary-checked
Every word below was checked in the Samsad dictionary on DSAL. শুভ (śubha), কালী (kālī) and পূজা (pūjā) are listed separately, though the joined কালীপূজা is not a headword.
- শুভ কালীপূজা (śubha kālīpūjā, "Shubho Kali Puja") — a blessed Kali Puja.
- অমাবস্যা (amābasyā) — the new moon.
- নিশীথ (niśītha) — midnight, late night; the root of "nishita".
- কার্তিক (kārtika) — the Bengali month, mid-October to mid-November.
- ভাইফোঁটা (bhāiphom̐ṭā) — Bhai Phonta, the brother's forehead mark, which our computation puts on Sunday 31 October 2027, when Dwitiya holds at sunrise.
Three original lines follow, in English with one Bengali phrase. Each names a detail of this year's night:
- "Shubho Kali Puja. May the fourteen lamps tonight light every corner, and the fifteenth one be you."
- "Thursday night, 10:55 in Kolkata. I will be thinking of the pandal and the jaba garlands from here."
- "A blessed Shyama Puja to the whole para, from someone who will be humming Ramprasad at midnight."
Sending a Kali Puja greeting from away
SubhSandesh has no Kali Puja template, and we would rather say so than stretch one. The closest is the interactive Diwali card on SubhSandesh: they light a diya at their door with your tag, a row of wish diyas, a rangoli that glows with your initials, and sky lanterns holding up to six photos. A letter opens from a red-and-gold liffafa, and the drawn crackers make no noise or smoke.
It takes about five minutes, opens from a private link in any browser with no app or account, and has love, family and friend modes. It says Shubh Deepavali, not Kali, so it suits Friday's Lakshmi Puja evening better than Thursday's puja. Shared SubhSandesh pages average 11.1 views each, so a page sent on Friday can be reopened over the weekend.
For a partner who could not get home to Kolkata this year, the miss-you page with a countdown to your next visit fits better, because it is built for someone far away. Of 214 miss-you pages made since July 2026, 43.5% were password-protected; that is two months of data and says nothing about festivals.
When a link is the wrong way to mark Kali Puja 2027
For a grandparent fasting until the puja ends after 11:45 PM, a phone call before 5 PM or after the prasad does more than any page. If you are in the same city, walking to the para pandal with them is the gift.
The Raksha Bandhan figures above also cut against planning early: 27.0% of those 89 pages were built the day before, and none more than 7 days ahead. For Kali Puja that suggests Wednesday 27 October is soon enough to prepare a message, and the greeting itself can wait until the puja is over.
