Lakshmi Puja Vidhi: The Diwali Puja at Home, Step by Step
Lakshmi puja vidhi at home is a fixed order of offerings to Lakshmi, made after Ganesha is worshipped first, on the Amavasya evening of Diwali, which falls on Friday 29 October 2027. The full form has 16 offerings (shodashopachara) and takes about 90 minutes with setup; a five-offering form takes about 15.
The usual failure is not the ritual but the shopping. On SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself and 27.0% the day before (n = 89, a different festival, used only as the nearest measure we have of how late people prepare). This page sets out the 16 offerings in five stages, a samagri timeline starting 25 October, and how five regions do the puja differently.
What is Lakshmi puja vidhi?
Lakshmi puja vidhi is the prescribed order of worship (vidhi means method) for the goddess of prosperity on Diwali's new-moon night. It is a household rite, usually led by a family member rather than a priest, and its unit is the upachara: an act of hospitality offered to the deity as to an honoured guest.
Describing household worship in Brahmanism and Hinduism (1887), the Sanskritist Monier Monier-Williams lists sixteen acts of homage, each said with one of the sixteen verses of the Purusha Sukta, Rig Veda X.90. That pattern underlies most Lakshmi puja vidhis, and the short home form, panchopachara, keeps five of them: sandal paste, flowers, incense, lamp and food.
Where the vidhi comes from: the Vishnu Purana scene
In Book I, chapter 9 of the Vishnu Purana in H. H. Wilson's translation (1864 edition), Sri rises from the churned ocean "seated on a full-blown lotos" with a water-lily in her hand, and the elephants of the skies pour water over her from golden vases. That scene explains the kamal gatta (lotus seeds) on the thali, the Gaja Lakshmi image, and the bath at the vidhi's centre.
The same chapter says the sages praised her with the Sri Sukta, the hymn opening "Hiranyavarnam", which many families still recite during the bath. A 2023 review in the journal Ayu adds that in the Vishnu Purana's churning account Lakshmi appeared soon after Dhanvantari, which is why Dhanvantari Jayanti is kept on Dhanteras, ahead of Lakshmi Puja; in 2027 that is Wednesday 27 October.
Lakshmi puja vidhi step by step: 16 offerings in 5 stages
The ten steps below group the sixteen upacharas into stages, with the preliminaries most North Indian homes add. Timings are our estimates, not measured data.
1. Clean, bathe and set the chowki
- Do: Sweep the puja corner and doorway, bathe, and spread a red or yellow cloth on a chowki facing east or north.
- Time: About 20 minutes, before sunset.
- If short of time: A clean shelf and a fresh cloth.
2. Place the kalash and the murtis
- Do: Fill a kalash three-quarters with water, add a coin, a supari and rice, ring it with five mango leaves and top it with a coconut. Seat Ganesha and Lakshmi beside it in your family's arrangement.
- Time: 10 minutes.
- If short of time: Skip the kalash; a Lakshmi-Ganesh photo is a complete altar.
3. Purify, light the lamp, take the sankalp
- Do: Sip water three times (achamana), sprinkle water on yourself and the samagri, light the ghee lamp, and state your name, place, date and intention with rice and a flower in your right palm.
- Time: 5 minutes.
- If short of time: The lamp and a one-line sankalp in your own language.
4. Worship Ganesha first
- Do: Offer roli, akshat, durva and a sweet. Monier-Williams records Ganesha being invoked with Rig Veda II.23, "Ganapatim gananam", before the main offerings.
- Time: 5 minutes.
- If short of time: "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah", once, with a flower.
5. Welcome her (offerings 1–5)
- Do: Invite Lakshmi (avahana), offer a seat of flowers (asana), water for her feet (padya), water with rice (arghya) and water to sip (achamaniya).
- Time: 5 to 7 minutes.
- If short of time: One offering of flowers and water.
6. Bathe her (offering 6)
- Do: Bathe a metal murti with panchamrit, then clean water, and wipe it dry. Monier-Williams names milk, clarified butter, honey and sugar; curd is the usual fifth.
- Time: 10 minutes.
- If short of time: For clay or a photo, sprinkle a few drops with a flower; unbaked clay softens.
7. Dress and anoint (offerings 7–9)
- Do: Offer cloth or mauli (vastra), ornaments (upavastra), then sandal paste, kumkum and haldi (gandha).
- Time: 5 minutes.
- If short of time: Mauli and a dot of kumkum.
8. Flowers, incense, lamp, food (offerings 10–13)
- Do: Offer lotus or marigold (pushpa), wave incense (dhupa) and the lamp (dipa), and set out food (naivedya): kheel-batashe, sweets, fruit, then paan with supari.
- Time: 10 minutes.
- If short of time: These four plus sandal paste are the whole panchopachara.
9. Circle, offer flowers, bow (offerings 14–16)
- Do: Walk clockwise around the altar, or turn in place (pradakshina), offer flowers with a mantra (mantra-pushpa), and bow (namaskara). Then sing the aarti and ask forgiveness for any mistake.
- Time: 10 minutes.
- If short of time: The aarti and a bow.
10. Light the house and the ledger
- Do: Carry flame from the altar lamp to diyas at the door, windows and balcony. Trading families open new account books marked with a swastik and "Shubh Labh".
- Time: 15 to 20 minutes.
- If short of time: One diya at the main door.
Lakshmi puja samagri list, by the day to get it
A samagri list works better as a timeline, because flowers wilt and murti stalls empty by Dhanteras. The last column shows how far ahead SubhSandesh users built their Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages, our nearest festival analogue (n = 89).
| When, for Diwali 2027 | What to get | Why then | Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages built this far ahead (SubhSandesh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4+ days ahead, by Mon 25 Oct | Murti pair or photo, chowki, red cloth, kalash, brass lamp, clay diyas, aasan | Durable; stalls thin out near Dhanteras | 6.7% |
| 2–3 days ahead, Tue 26 to Wed 27 Oct | Roli, haldi, chandan, akshat, kamal gatta, supari, elaichi, mauli, camphor, ghee, wicks, coins, bahi-khata | Dry goods keep; Dhanteras is the customary buying day | 5.6% |
| Day before, Thu 28 Oct | Kheel-batashe, sweets, dry fruit, honey, sugar, coconut | Keeps a day | 27.0% |
| The day, Fri 29 Oct | Lotus or marigold, garlands, durva, mango and paan leaves, fruit, milk, curd | Perishable | 49.4% |
Read the last column as a warning, not a plan. In that sample not one page was made more than 7 days ahead, so if your household works the same way, move only the first two rows earlier and the puja survives a late start.
Regional variations: five ways India does Lakshmi puja
There is no single correct Lakshmi puja. Monier-Williams recorded Divali as kept "in honour of Vishnu's wife Lakshmi or of Siva's wife Bhavani", and where your family's practice differs from the steps above, follow it.
- North India: Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped together after sunset on the Amavasya, Friday 29 October 2027, and many homes buy a new clay pair each year.
- Gujarat and Marwari trading families: The puja doubles as Chopda Pujan, when new account books are consecrated with a swastik and "Shubh Labh". The Gujarati new year, Bestu Varas, follows on Saturday 30 October 2027.
- Maharashtra: Lakshmi Pujan falls on the same evening, and many Marathi homes place a new broom in the puja as a form of Lakshmi and offer coriander seeds with jaggery (dhane-gul).
- Bengal, Odisha and Assam: The main Lakshmi puja is Kojagari Lokkhi Puja on the full moon after Durga Puja, and Diwali's new-moon night belongs to Kali Puja. In 2027 Kali Puja falls on the night of Thursday 28 October, so check a Bengali panjika rather than assuming the same night.
- Tamil Nadu and Kerala: Deepavali centres on the pre-dawn oil bath of Naraka Chaturdashi, Thursday 28 October 2027, and an evening Lakshmi puja is a family choice rather than the main rite.
For Jains the same night marks Mahavira's nirvana, and for Sikhs it is Bandi Chhor Divas. A greeting to a Jain or Sikh friend should not assume a Lakshmi puja.
Lighting diyas safely during the puja
The lamp is part of the vidhi, and it is also the night's commonest household injury. A 2024 review of five Diwalis at Safdarjung Hospital's burn unit in New Delhi found that 32.5% of the 489 Diwali-related burns it treated, over three days each year from 2018 to 2022, were caused by diyas, most often a burning diya left on the floor.
The same study found 70.4% of diya-burn patients were women. Set diyas on a ledge above walking height, pin dupattas while carrying flame, and keep the all-night lamp in a deep brass holder away from curtains.
When a full vidhi is the wrong choice, and where SubhSandesh fits
The sixteen-offering form is the wrong choice for a one-room flat, a shift ending at 9 pm or a hostel that bans open flames. The five-offering form with one diya on a steel plate is a complete puja, but never pour panchamrit on unbaked clay, and never skip Ganesha to save five minutes.
SubhSandesh is not a puja tool. It covers the greeting for one person who cannot be at your puja: the interactive Diwali card on SubhSandesh lets them light a diya at their door, a row of wish diyas and sky lanterns holding up to six of your photos, and takes about five minutes to make. Send it after the aarti; 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and this one needs no app or account.
If that person is a partner in another city, the miss-you page with open-when letters is built for distance rather than the festival. Pair it with a video call during the aarti.
