- • A best-friend Navratri wish needs one private detail; Robin Dunbar's 2025 review puts the optimal number of close relationships at five, and a forward written for 200 contacts does not reach that circle.
- • Dancing's bonding effect reaches only the people present (Dunbar, 2025), so a best friend who moved away needs the wish, a call or a voice note more than anyone in the circle.
- • Sharad Navratri 2026 runs 11–19 October; Dussehra is 20 October in Delhi but 21 October in Bengal and Mysuru. In 2027 the nine nights run 30 September to 8 October.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so keep a best-friend wish to about three lines.
On this page
- 1. The friend you have played garba with every year since school
- 2. The best friend who moved away this year
- 3. The friend of a different faith who comes with you anyway
- 4. The friend going through a hard year
- 5. The best friend who just got a partner
- 6. A best friend of any gender, kept clearly platonic
Navratri Wishes for Best Friend, by the Year You Two Had
The rule for Navratri wishes for best friend messages: name one thing only the two of you share, such as the garba ground you return to, the city they moved to, or the year they had. Write for a small screen, because 48.3% of the pages shared through SubhSandesh are opened on a phone.
Do not wait for the perfect moment either: in our nearest festival measurement, Raksha Bandhan 2026 (89 pages, a one-day festival, not Navratri data), 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself. Below are 24 original wishes sorted by situation, some in Hinglish, plus what friendship research says about why the wish matters most when your best friend is not in the circle.
What makes a Navratri wish feel like it came from a best friend?
A best-friend Navratri wish is a festival greeting that carries a private reference: a shared night, a running joke, a promise. Without one, it is a forward.
Robin Dunbar's 2025 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences reports that wellbeing is best predicted by the number and quality of close relationships, with five being the optimal number. Your best friend sits in that innermost five, so write one blessing, one shared detail and one line about the nights ahead.
24 Navratri wishes for a best friend, by situation
Each group gives who it suits, the tone, when to send, and four original lines. Change one detail so it sounds like you.
1. The friend you have played garba with every year since school
Who: the buddy for whom the circle is tradition. Tone: nostalgic, teasing. When: the evening before night one.
- "Same ground, same chaniya choli drama, same you. Nine more nights of holding your dupatta. Happy Navratri, partner in crime."
- "Saal badalte hain, garba wala dost nahi. Nau raatein, ek bhi miss nahi." (Years change, the garba friend doesn't. Nine nights, not one skipped.)
- "You still owe me the last dhol round from Class 10. Collecting it this Navratri."
- "Happy Navratri to the only person who has seen every one of my garba outfits, including the ones we don't talk about."
2. The best friend who moved away this year
Who: a friend who changed city or country. Tone: warm, never guilt-inducing. When: the first and last nights.
- "First Navratri without you in the circle. I'll dance your half of the steps and send you the shaky video."
- "Tum wahan, main yahan, beech mein sirf ek video call. Ek garba round tumhare naam." (You there, me here, only a video call between us. One garba round in your name.)
- "May Maa Durga watch over your new city the way she watched over our old one. I miss you more than the dhol."
- "Nine nights, nine voice notes. That's the deal this year."
The voice notes matter. Roberts and Dunbar's 18-month study of 25 school-leavers found friendships declined more than family ties, slowed most by more talking for women and more shared activities for men.
3. The friend of a different faith who comes with you anyway
Who: a Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Parsi or non-religious best friend who joins your garba. Tone: grateful, with no assumption that they pray. When: before your first night together.
- "You don't have to know the aarti. You just have to show up, which you always do. Happy Navratri, and thank you."
- "My festival, your nine nights of patience. Happy Navratri to my favourite guest, who was never really a guest."
- "Mera tyohaar, tera dhol pe naach. Isse achha kya?" (My festival, you dancing to the dhol. What could be better?)
- "Whatever you believe, I believe in you. Happy Navratri from your loudest friend."
4. The friend going through a hard year
Who: a friend after a breakup, a death in the family, or an exam result that hurt. Tone: gentle, no "cheer up". When: day one, privately, never as a public story.
- "No pressure to dance this year. If you want to come, I'll stand next to you. If you don't, I'll bring the prasad over."
- "Koi jaldi nahi. Tu aaye toh garba, na aaye toh chai. Dono mein main hoon." (No hurry. If you come, garba; if not, chai. I'm there for both.)
- "I'm not going to say 'be happy'. I'm going to say I'm here, all nine nights and after."
- "Happy Navratri. You don't have to reply to this."
For a grieving friend, the last line can be the whole message. Do not chase a reply.
5. The best friend who just got a partner
Who: the bestie spending this Navratri as half of a couple. Tone: honest and funny, never bitter. When: before they announce their plans.
- "Congratulations on your first Navratri as a couple. Now accepting applications for the vacant garba buddy post. Requirements: be you."
- "Ek raat mere naam kar de, baaki aath unke. Deal?" (Give me one night, the other eight are theirs. Deal?)
- "Tell them the rules: you're theirs for garba, mine for the post-garba Maggi."
- "May your partner learn the steps faster than you did. Happy Navratri, both of you."
6. A best friend of any gender, kept clearly platonic
Who: a close friend where no line should read as a proposal. Tone: sibling-like. When: any night.
- "Happy Navratri to my best friend, my garba bodyguard and my second opinion on outfits. In that order."
- "Dost hai tu, dandiya date nahi, aur yahi sabse achha hai." (You're my friend, not my dandiya date, and that's the best part.)
- "To the friend who has heard every one of my crush stories and still dances with me: Happy Navratri."
- "Happy Navratri to the sister I picked myself."
"Yaar" or a named shared history keeps a line platonic, and for a female best friend that naming is not small. A 2025 EHESS doctoral thesis surveying 1,062 people in Purnea (Bihar) and Margao (Goa) found men more likely than women to have close friends, with intimacy between women often viewed as indulgent or threatening. Only the abstract is public.
Why the wish matters most when your best friend is not in the circle
Dunbar's 2025 review lists dancing, singing, feasting and religious ritual among activities that produce an enhanced sense of bonding, then adds the catch: that bonding has no effect on existing relationships, "even for best friendships", when the friend is not present. The review also says that failing to meet often enough makes emotional closeness decline measurably within a few months. For a friend who moved away, the wish, the call and the shaky video are the part of the nine nights they can share.
When to send each wish in 2026 and 2027
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October, per Drik Panchang's New Delhi calendar. Durga Ashtami falls on 19 October, the ninth night itself, so those two wishes go out together.
Dussehra is Tuesday 20 October in Delhi and North India but Wednesday 21 October in Bengal and Mysuru. In Gujarat, garba returns on Sharad Purnima, the night of Sunday 25 October 2026.
In 2027, Sharad Navratri runs from 30 September to 8 October, with Dussehra on 9 October in Delhi, per the same calendar for 2027. In the Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, our nearest analogue, the median lead time was 0 days. Navratri lasts nine nights, so a wish on night three is not late.
Which way to send it, for which best friend
Four ways to deliver the wish are compared below by who each suits, who can see it, and one measured number. Match the format to distance: a friend who can come needs an invitation, and a friend who can't needs contact.
| Format | Best for | Who can see it | The number behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp text, three lines | Same-city garba buddy | Only them | 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone |
| Voice note | Friend who moved away | Only them | Talking slowed friendship decline most for women (Roberts and Dunbar, 25 people) |
| Be My Dandiya Partner page | Asking a same-city bestie to be your garba buddy | Anyone with the link, unless you add a password | 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page |
| Turning up in person | Any friend in the same city | Just the two of you | Dancing's bonding effect reaches only those present (Dunbar, 2025) |
Asking your best friend to be your garba buddy
For a same-city bestie, the wish can become the ask. SubhSandesh's Be My Dandiya Partner invitation has a best-friend mode that asks "Will you be my garba buddy, all nine nights?" and changes the pass and reply to match.
You add both names, nine short lines (one per night, where the wishes above fit), up to six photos, and the night's details. Your friend needs no app or account, lights nine diyas to read your lines, picks the colour they will twirl in, and gets a downloadable 1080×1920 Dandiya Pass. The No button turns into a second Yes after five tries; the interface is in English only.
For a friend who moved away, Streak fits better: two people, one tap a day, for a hundred days. For anything else, browse every SubhSandesh template.
When a page, or any wish, is the wrong choice
For your whole friend group, the dandiya partner page is the wrong tool: it is a one-to-one invitation whose 1080×1920 pass carries two names, not ten. Use the group chat.
For a grieving friend, skip the invitation and the game; turning up with food is better. For a best friend with a new partner, send a line from group 5, not a competing ask. A friend who reads Gujarati or Hindi more comfortably should get a plain message.
