- • Thoreau wrote "October is the month for painted leaves" in "Autumnal Tints" (1862); the Gutenberg text says "for", not the "of" many lists print.
- • Robert Frost's "October" (A Boy's Will, 1913) is public domain in the US but stays in copyright until the end of 2033 in life-plus-70 countries such as the UK.
- • Autumn colour is mostly unmasking: chlorophyll breaks down to reveal yellow carotenes, while red anthocyanins form fresh in autumn (SUNY ESF).
- • A 2020 PLOS ONE study of 5,282 Dutch adults found seasonal mood effects small or very small, and only in people higher in neuroticism.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so October lines of 2 to 12 words suit captions best.

October Quotes for the Whole Month, From Keats to Captions
The best October quotes cover the whole month, not only Halloween: checked autumn verse for a card, "hello October" lines for the 1st, and short captions for the leaves in between. Below are 6 public-domain lines matched word for word against Project Gutenberg, including Thoreau's 1862 "October is the month for painted leaves" (many lists print "of"), plus 55 original lines sorted by use. Keep them short: across SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views), and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so the line you pick gets read on a small screen, more than once.
Below the lines sit the science of why leaves turn red and what a 5,282-person study found about autumn mood. A table then matches each theme to a caption, card or planner.
6 public-domain October and autumn lines, checked against Gutenberg
Each line below matches the Project Gutenberg text linked, spelling and punctuation included. October, the 10th month, has 31 days.
-
"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, / Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;"
John Keats, "To Autumn", written 19 September 1819 and printed in Keats: Poems Published in 1820. Keats was born on 31 October 1795.
-
"Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? / Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—"
Keats, the third stanza of the same poem.
-
"October is the month for painted leaves. Their rich glow now flashes round the world."
Henry David Thoreau, "Autumnal Tints" (1862), in Excursions (1863). The Gutenberg text reads "for", not "of".
-
"October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight."
Thoreau, the same essay, three sentences later.
-
"The month of carnival of all the year, / When Nature lets the wild earth go its way / And spend whole seasons on a single day."
Helen Hunt Jackson, "October", in A Calendar of Sonnets (1886), published the year after her death.
-
"O hushed October morning mild, / Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;"
Robert Frost, "October", in A Boy's Will (London, 1913).
Emily Brontë's "Fall, leaves, fall" and Jackson's "October's Bright Blue Weather" are left out: no Gutenberg edition we found prints them to check against. One caution on Frost: he died in 1963, so "October" is public domain in the US but stays in copyright until the end of 2033 in countries with a life-plus-70 term, such as the UK.

Why October leaves turn red, orange and yellow
Leaves change colour because the green pigment breaks down and reveals, or adds, other pigments. SUNY ESF's forestry explainer, "Why Leaves Change Color", says that shorter daylight and falling temperatures make leaves stop making food, so chlorophyll breaks down and the green disappears.
The yellows and oranges were there all summer: carotenes and xanthophylls, the pigments that colour a carrot, masked by chlorophyll. The reds and purples are new, from anthocyanin pigments that form in autumn; ESF credits them for the reds of dogwoods and sumacs and, mixed with other pigments, the sugar maple's brilliant orange. Oaks lean brown.
Meanwhile a layer of cells cuts the leaf loose at the stalk and seals the wound. So Thoreau's "painted" leaves are partly unmasked rather than painted, worth a caption: "October doesn't add the gold. It just stops hiding it."
Does October actually change your mood?
Less than most quote pages assume. Winthorst and colleagues surveyed 5,282 Dutch adults online and reported in PLOS ONE in 2020 that people scored higher on positive affect and lower on depressive symptoms in spring than in summer, autumn or winter, and lower on negative affect in spring than in autumn.
The effects were "small or very small". Only participants higher in neuroticism showed seasonality at all, and the 503 who answered twice in different seasons showed no within-person change. Its autumn ran 21 September to 20 December.
So a cheerful "hello October" line is not fighting a universal autumn slump. For someone who struggles as the days shorten, a quote is a kindness, not care.
Which October quote fits a caption, card or planner?
Lengths are the word range of this page's own examples. Pick by where the line will sit.
| Theme | Best use | Length | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public-domain verse | Card, letter, framed print | 9–25 words | "October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight." |
| Hello October | 1 October post, planner cover | 6–12 words | Hello October. Last quarter, first scarf. |
| Cosy and leaves | Story caption, letter board | 6–14 words | Lamps on at five, and nobody complaining. |
| Halloween countdown | Story or status, 24–31 October | 4–12 words | Pumpkins bought, carving date pending. |
| Motivational | Planner, work chat, journal | 4–11 words | You do not need January to start again. October will do. |
Short captions win on a phone screen. The verse is better on paper, where nobody scrolls past it.
Ending October on the 31st with one Halloween page
October ends on Halloween, 31 October, every year. The interactive Halloween card takes your letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin, and takes about five minutes to make. They knock three times on a little haunted house, carve a jack-o'-lantern until your word glows, and read your letter by flashlight in a dark attic: put the Keats or Frost line there.
It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes, and it ends with "Will you be my boo?" and a 1080×1920 Boo License marked "Valid every 31 October, forever". You get an email the first time they answer.
For a countdown, the cinematic Halloween page adds an optional unlock time: until then the link shows only their name and a countdown. It also takes a voice note of up to 60 seconds.
Start early: for Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we have measured, 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself. That is a different festival and a small sample, n = 89.
When an October quote is the wrong choice
Neither page is a party tool. Both are one-person greeting pages with an English interface, so for a group chat, a classroom or a shop window, post or print the quote instead.
October is not Halloween for everyone. In India it often carries Navratri, Dussehra or Diwali, and UK Bonfire Night follows on 5 November. And for a printed product sold in the UK, use Keats, Thoreau or Jackson rather than Frost.
