Pumpkin Puns: 48 Original Lines, Sorted by Where You'll Use Them
The best pumpkin puns hang on one pumpkin word with a second meaning, such as gourd, squash, seed, stem, pulp or the "kin" hiding inside pumpkin, and they are chosen for where they will land. A spelled pun like "gourd" always works on a screen, but said aloud it depends on accent. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, where a line is read rather than heard, and a page averages 11.1 recorded views, so one good line gets reread.
Below: 48 original pumpkin puns for Instagram, kids, love and autumn, a table of which pun words survive British, American and Australian English, and two studies on what makes a pun land.
What is a pumpkin pun?
A pumpkin pun is wordplay where a pumpkin word carries two meanings at once, so "out of my gourd" means both a squash and a head. It works only when the reader holds both senses together.
Wiktionary's entry for pumpkin traces it to the older "pompion" plus the diminutive "-kin", ultimately from a Greek word for "ripe", first attested in 1647. It also lists a US sense, a term of endearment for someone small and cute, which powers the love section below. Wiktionary's gourd entry adds a slang sense, a person's head, behind most gourd lines here.
48 pumpkin puns, grouped by where you'll use them
Every line was written for this post. Each group names its best use, whether it works read or spoken, and the pumpkin words it leans on.
1. Instagram captions: 12 puns written for the screen
These suit a porch photo, a carving shot or a pumpkin selfie. They are built to be read, so spelling tricks are fine, and they lean on gourd, stem, seed, pulp and "ripe".
- Ripe for the 'gram, and so is the pumpkin.
- Out of my gourd and into October.
- Gourd-ening leave: back online in November.
- Stemming from a long line of porch royalty.
- Seeded number one in the porch rankings.
- Pulp fiction, starring one pumpkin and a very brave spoon.
- Light-hearted, literally: there's a candle in there.
- Gourd-ian of the front step, on duty until 1 November.
- Hollowed out, lit up, still smiling.
- Cut me some slack, I carved this by hand.
- Jack of all trades, lantern of one.
- Pumped. Also scooped, carved and lit.
2. Kids' pumpkin puns: 12 that work out loud
These suit a lunchbox note or trick-or-treat walk on 31 October. They are built to be heard, so none depends on how "gourd" is pronounced, and they lean on pumped, kin, seeds and stems.
- How do pumpkins feel on Halloween morning? Pumped.
- Who comes to a pumpkin's birthday party? All its pump-kin.
- Why don't pumpkins keep secrets? Somebody always spills the seeds.
- What did the pumpkin say after carving night? "I'm all scooped out."
- Why did the pumpkin fail its spelling test? It wrote G-O-U-R-D for "good".
- Why did the pumpkin visit the doctor? It was feeling a bit seedy.
- What does a pumpkin wear to bed? Pump-jamas.
- Why can't a carved pumpkin keep quiet? It has a big mouth now.
- Why did the jack-o'-lantern join the choir? Nobody could hold a candle to it.
- What do pumpkins lift at the gym? Pump-kin iron.
- Why did the little pumpkin hold its mum's stem? It didn't want to get picked on.
- How did the pumpkin win the race? It had a head start, being mostly head.
3. Love puns: 12 for a partner, a best friend or a crush
These suit a text, a card or a caption under a photo of two people. They work read or spoken, and they lean on the endearment sense of "pumpkin", plus carve, pulp and kin. The last two are for a crush and leave an easy way out.
- Of every pumpkin this October, you're the only one I call "pumpkin".
- You've carved out a permanent spot on my porch and in my head.
- I'd go out of my gourd without you.
- You make my insides go all pulpy.
- Without you I'm a hollow head with a nice stem.
- You're the candle; I'm just the orange bit around you.
- Stem to bottom, I'm yours.
- You're the only gourd thing that happened to me this week.
- For a best friend: pump-kin by choice, the friend who became family.
- For a best friend: two seeds from the same pumpkin, different vines.
- For a crush: no pressure, but my jack-o'-lantern is smiling about you.
- For a crush: if the answer's no, I'll still share the pie.
4. Fall and autumn puns: 12 for harvest weekends
These suit harvest tables, soup photos and the weeks either side of Halloween. They lean on vine, squash, seed, stalk, peel and pulp, and two of them assume British English.
- Vine and dandy, thanks for asking.
- Orange squash in the glass, orange squash on the step.
- Pumpkin pie chart: 100% pie, 0% regrets.
- Squashed into one weekend: soup, pie, carving and a long nap.
- Gone to seed, and loving it.
- Stalk market update: pumpkins up, willpower down.
- Gourd morning, autumn.
- Thick-skinned since September.
- Peel-good soup weather.
- Pulp and circumstance: carving season is officially open.
- Roast in peace, little seeds.
- One pumpkin, three meals, zero leftovers worth mentioning.
Read or heard? Which pumpkin pun words survive every accent
Gourd is the riskiest pumpkin pun word in English, because Wiktionary lists 4 pronunciations of it: two British (/ɡʊəd/ and /ɡɔːd/) and two American (/ɡʊɚd/ and /ɡɔɹd/). A "gourd = good" pun only sounds right to listeners who say the first British or first American form; to everyone else it is a spelling joke.
Squash splits the other way. Wiktionary's squash entry gives a fruit-concentrate drink, a crush and a walled-court sport among its senses, so "orange squash in the glass" reads as a drink in the UK, India and Australia and as a vegetable in the US. Australians add a twist: the pumpkin entry notes that "pumpkin" there covers cultivars Americans call winter squash.
The table compares five pun words by meaning, risk and best use.
| Pun word | Second meaning used here | Safe said aloud? | Best group |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gourd | Good (some accents), a head (slang) | Only for 2 of the 4 listed pronunciations | Instagram, written cards |
| Squash | A crush, a cram, a UK fruit drink | Yes, but the drink sense is lost in the US | Fall, with British readers |
| Pumpkin | Pumped, kin (family), a term of endearment | Yes, in the UK, US and Australian forms listed | Kids, love |
| Seed | Seedy (unwell), a tournament seed | Yes | Kids, Instagram |
| Pulp | Pulp fiction, pulpy feelings | Yes | Love, Instagram |
The takeaway: write gourd puns for screens and save spoken jokes for pumpkin, seed and pulp, which sound the same everywhere.
Do close-sounding pumpkin puns score higher? Two studies
Yes, on average, which is the research case for the accent table above. Palmann and Miller's 2025 study in the journal Humor measured how far each pun word sounds from the word it hints at, across punning jokes that 1,063 US native English speakers had already rated in 28,210 head-to-head pairs.
Same-spelling puns averaged a funniness score of 0.60 against 0.52 for different-spelling ones, and a smaller sound gap went with higher ratings on two of four distance measures. "Gourd" for "good" is a different-spelling pun whose gap changes with accent, so it is a gamble out loud and safest in writing.
Konovalova and Petrova's 2023 study tracked the eyes of 55 people viewing posters, and summarises earlier ratings in which pun headlines scored as more attractive and original than plain ones. Viewers started with the text and spent longer on it than on the picture, which suggests a pumpkin photo's caption gets read, not skimmed.
A pumpkin punchline from 1820
Pumpkin humour is older than Instagram. At the end of Irving's Sleepy Hollow story, free on Project Gutenberg, searchers find Ichabod's hat with "a shattered pumpkin" beside it, and Brom Bones "always burst into a hearty laugh at the mention of the pumpkin".
The joke is a pumpkin with two meanings, a vegetable and a ghost's head. Every gourd-as-head line above runs on the same trick, two centuries later.
Put one pumpkin pun on a Halloween page for one person
A caption reaches a feed; a page reaches one person. Halloween is Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
Our Halloween card where they carve your word into a pumpkin suits a quick, playful send: roughly five minutes to build, up to six photos, and one carved word, so a single pun word like PUMPED or KIN fits. It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes.
The premium Halloween page with a voice note suits a bigger gesture of about ten minutes. Its 60-second voice note fixes the accent problem, because they hear your gourd line in your own voice, and it takes up to 12 photos plus a reply box.
On SubhSandesh, 38.5% of creators password-protect a page and 90.9% of started pages get published. If "pumpkin" is your partner's year-round nickname, the romantic "I love you" page for a partner suits it better than a Halloween one.
When a pumpkin pun is the wrong choice
Skip any pun for someone grieving, or when an apology is due; wordplay there reads as dodging. Say the plain thing on 31 October and save the gourd jokes for next year.
Skip our pages for a party or a classroom: each greets one recipient, and the interface is English only, so pumpkin wordplay suits someone who reads English first. For a grandparent who never opens links, a felt-tip pun on a real pumpkin beats any screen.
