Pushya Nakshatra 2027: Diwali's Pushya Is Saturday 23 October
Pushya Nakshatra 2027 before Diwali runs from 8:24 PM IST on Friday 22 October to 7:07 PM IST on Saturday 23 October, six days before Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October. The Moon is in Pushya at Saturday's sunrise, so the day is Shani Pushya. There is no Guru Pushya or Ravi Pushya anywhere between 27 September and 18 November 2027, and we computed every time below from the Moon's position before checking it against a published panchang.
The shopping can start a week early; the greeting usually waits. On Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival SubhSandesh has data for (n = 89 pages, a different festival and a small sample), 49.4% of greeting pages were built on the festival day itself. Not one of those 89 was built more than 7 days ahead, which is about where Pushya sits from Diwali this year.
All 13 Pushya Nakshatra dates in 2027, with IST start and end
The Moon passes through Pushya once every 27.3 days, so 2027 has 13 visits. Times are IST from our own calculation, and the named yogas follow the weekday at sunrise, as the Drik Panchang Guru Pushya list for 2027 does.
- January: 10:24 AM Fri 22 Jan to 7:31 AM Sat 23 Jan.
- February: 9:05 PM Thu 18 Feb to 6:35 PM Fri 19 Feb (Guru Pushya on Thursday night).

- April: 10:52 AM Wed 14 Apr to 9:33 AM Thu 15 Apr (Guru Pushya on Thursday morning).
- May: 4:25 PM Tue 11 May to 2:55 PM Wed 12 May.

Our times agree with Drik Panchang's New Delhi list to within a minute for every month. One page in the top 10 we measured on 22 October 2026 prints a second table that runs about 70 minutes later, 9:35 PM to 8:00 PM for the October visit; we could not reproduce it.
Why October 2027 gets Shani Pushya, not Guru Pushya
The Moon returns to the same star in 27.32 days, which is three weeks plus 6.32 days. So each visit lands roughly one weekday earlier than the last, and the Thursday matches cluster together and then vanish for months.
In 2027 that means Guru Pushya in February, March and April, then a slide through Wednesday, Tuesday, Monday and Sunday until the Diwali visit reaches Saturday. Thursday returns only in the pre-dawn hours of 19 November, which Drik counts from 1:51 to 6:47 AM, three weeks after Lakshmi Puja.
The pairing with Thursday matters because of a name. In the table of presiding deities in Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, Pushya belongs to Brihaspati, and Thursday is Brihaspati's day, Guruvar.
What Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita says about Pushya
The custom has a textual root, though a narrower one than shop windows suggest. In the 1884 English translation of the Brihat Samhita by N. Chidambaram Iyer, the chapter on garments says that a new garment first worn "in that of Pushya" brings "acquisition of wealth".
Pushya is not alone in that verse. The same chapter promises wealth for Rohini and Uttara Phalguni, more garments for Ashwini, and loss for Ashlesha, the very next nakshatra. Elsewhere the text names Pushya for a royal purification bath, Pushya Snana, and for sinking wells and planting trees.
We found no line in that translation telling anyone to buy gold on Pushya. The leap from wearing something new to buying something new is a later popular reading, and families who keep the custom keep it as tradition rather than a rule from this text.
Ravi Pushya on 26 September 2027 lands in Pitru Paksha
The last Sunday Pushya before Diwali falls from sunrise to 12:37 PM on 26 September 2027. That date sits inside Pitru Paksha, which the Drik Panchang Shraddha calendar runs from Purnima Shraddha on 15 September to Sarva Pitru Amavasya on 29 September 2027.
Families who keep the ancestral fortnight free of new purchases will skip it. For them the choice before Diwali narrows to the one Saturday visit, or to waiting for Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October.
Pushya before Diwali in 2026, 2027 and 2028, compared
The weekday of the Diwali Pushya changes every year. If you are reading this in October 2026, this year's is Ravi Pushya on Sunday 1 November 2026.
| Visit | Pushya window (IST) | Day at sunrise | Days before Lakshmi Puja |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diwali 2026 | 5:39 AM Sun 1 Nov to 4:30 AM Mon 2 Nov | Sunday: Ravi Pushya | 7 (Sun 8 Nov 2026) |
| Pitru Paksha 2027 | 2:27 PM Sat 25 Sep to 12:37 PM Sun 26 Sep | Sunday: Ravi Pushya | 33 (Fri 29 Oct 2027) |
| Diwali 2027 | 8:24 PM Fri 22 Oct to 7:07 PM Sat 23 Oct | Saturday: Shani Pushya | 6 (Fri 29 Oct 2027) |
| Diwali 2028 | 9:10 AM Thu 12 Oct to 8:13 AM Fri 13 Oct | Thursday: Guru Pushya | 5 (Tue 17 Oct 2028) |
The 2026 and 2028 rows also match Drik's Ravi Pushya and Guru Pushya lists for those years, to within a minute. So 2027 is the odd year of the three, the only one whose Diwali Pushya carries neither of the two named yogas.
One instant everywhere: Pushya timings for Indian cities and abroad
A nakshatra changes when the Moon crosses a fixed point among the stars, so it begins at the same instant for everyone on Earth. Pushya is the arc from 93°20′ to 106°40′ of sidereal longitude, the 13°20′ span that Ebenezer Burgess's 1866 study of the nakshatra system gives for "the whole of Pushya". We used the Lahiri ayanamsa, 24.24° in October 2027.
Only sunrise, which sets the weekday label, depends on the city. On Saturday 23 October 2027, Pushya is running at sunrise everywhere below, so it is Shani Pushya for all of them:
- Kolkata: sunrise 5:36 AM, about 13½ hours of Pushya left in the day.
- Delhi: sunrise 6:26 AM, Pushya until 7:07 PM.
- Mumbai: sunrise 6:35 AM, Pushya until 7:07 PM.
- London: 3:54 PM Friday to 2:37 PM Saturday, British Summer Time.
- New York and Toronto: 10:54 AM Friday to 9:37 AM Saturday, Eastern Daylight Time, so barely 2 hours after a 7:15 AM New York sunrise.
So "regional" Pushya tables that differ by an hour are not about geography. A different ayanamsa or calculation method moves both ends, by roughly 2 minutes of time for every arcminute of difference.
Seeing Pushya before dawn on Saturday 23 October 2027
You can see the nakshatra itself, not just read about it. Pushya's stars are the faint group in Cancer around the Beehive cluster, and its brightest marker, Asellus Australis (delta Cancri), sits less than a tenth of a degree from the ecliptic.
From Delhi the Moon rises at 11:36 PM on Friday, about half lit. By 5:30 AM on Saturday it stands high in the south-east, roughly 6 degrees from Asellus Australis, about three fingers' width at arm's length. It passes closest, about 1 degree, near 4:30 PM, in daylight.
What people buy on Pushya, and what this post will not advise
Drik Panchang's Ravi Pushya page describes the custom plainly: people shop for coming weddings, events and festivals, and the time is held auspicious for buying new items. Its Guru Pushya page adds education, starting new work and signing big deals to the list.
This post describes a custom; it does not recommend buying anything, on any date. Prices, purity and whether a purchase makes sense are outside its scope, and a calendar position is not a reason to spend.
Sending the Diwali greeting after the Pushya shopping
Shopping happens on Pushya; the greeting goes out on Diwali night, usually to a phone. Across SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone.
For one person you want to wish, the interactive Diwali card on SubhSandesh lets them light a diya at their door, light a row of wish diyas, colour a rangoli with your initials and open a letter from a shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes, works for love, family or a friend, and opens as a private link in any browser with no app or account.
If the Pushya market trip used to be something you did with a partner who now lives in another city, the miss-you page for a partner is built for that distance, with letters, memories and a reunion countdown. It is not a Diwali template, so use it alongside the Diwali card, not instead of it.
When Pushya timing, or a greeting page, is the wrong tool
These times assume the Lahiri ayanamsa and a sunrise rule for the weekday. A family panchang built on another method can move both ends, and some traditions read the yoga by whichever weekday the window touches, not by sunrise. Follow the panchang your family already uses.
The SubhSandesh page is a greeting for one person, not a muhurat tool or a shopping guide. The template is new, so the platform has no Diwali usage data yet, and the Raksha Bandhan figures above are an analogue, not a Diwali measurement.
