- • All 10 classic lines here were checked word for word against Project Gutenberg editions; Poe's "Annabel Lee" (1849) actually begins "But we loved with a love that was more than love".
- • "Sleep, those little slices of death" appears nowhere in the five-volume Raven Edition of Poe, and "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" is not in Stoker's 1897 Dracula.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so a romantic Halloween quote should fit one screen: one classic plus two lines of your own.
- • In two 2007 randomised trials, writing about affection for 20 minutes on three occasions over five weeks lowered total cholesterol (abstract read only).

Romantic Halloween Quotes: 10 Verified Classics and 40 Originals
The best romantic Halloween quotes come in two kinds: a short Gothic classic you can attribute exactly, and an original line in your own voice. Here are 10 public-domain lines from Poe, Shakespeare, Emily Brontë, Keats, Rossetti and Dickinson, each checked against a Project Gutenberg edition, plus 40 originals.
Keep it short. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, and the romantic "I love you" page is the most-viewed template, with 29.7% of all page views. Love notes get read on small screens.
We also checked five famous lines credited to Poe, Stoker or Shelley: three are not in the texts at all, and two come from horror scenes.
Why do love and death go together on Halloween?
Gothic writing pairs love with death because death is the one test love cannot pass in life, so the poem lets it pass anyway.
Poe said so himself. In "The Philosophy of Composition" (Graham's Magazine, April 1846) he called "the death, then, of a beautiful woman" "unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world", spoken by a bereaved lover. Read it in the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore's transcription.
A 2025 study in Diálogo das Letras, Lima's reading of "Annabel Lee", notes it was Poe's last complete poem, published in 1849 in six stanzas and 41 lines, and argues its force rests on love and death together. Yukari Oda's 2010 article in Revue LISA, Emily Brontë and the Gothic, places Catherine Earnshaw among Gothic heroines and reads Heathcliff's identity as depending on her existence.
10 verified public-domain romantic Halloween quotes
Each line keeps the Gutenberg edition's spelling, capitals and dashes.
1. Edgar Allan Poe, "Annabel Lee" (1849)
"But we loved with a love that was more than love— I and my ANNABEL LEE—"
Usually trimmed to start at "We". Source: the Raven Edition, Volume 5 on Project Gutenberg.
2. Edgar Allan Poe, "Ulalume" (1847)
"It was night in the lonesome October Of my most immemorial year:"
A poem about lost love, and the natural opener for an October anniversary card.
3. Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven" (1845)
"For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—"
Write it above her name.
4. Edgar Allan Poe, "Introduction" (Poems, 1831)
"I could not love except where Death Was mingling his with Beauty's breath—"
A couplet Poe later dropped, kept in the Raven Edition notes.
5. William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (first printed 1597)
"Shall I believe That unsubstantial death is amorous;"
Romeo in the tomb: a caption for a vampire couples' costume.
6. Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights (1847)
"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same;"
Change "his" to "yours" only if you drop the attribution.
7. Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights (1847)
"Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!"
Heathcliff to Catherine's ghost; for long marriages, not third dates.
8. John Keats, "La Belle Dame sans Merci" (1819)
"I met a Lady in the Meads Full beautiful, a faery's child,"
A supernatural meet-cute, if you stop before the ending.
9. Christina Rossetti, "Remember" (1862)
"Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land;"
Good for long distance.
10. Emily Dickinson, "Because I could not stop for Death" (1890)
"Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me;"
Death as a polite gentleman caller.
Which famous "Poe" and "Dracula" love quotes are fake?
We searched all five Raven Edition volumes, Dracula (1897) and Frankenstein (1818), then checked the Poe Museum's list, Did Poe Really Say That?, which says most circulating Poe quotes are misattributed. Skip these:
- "Sleep, those little slices of death—how I loathe them." Zero matches. The Poe Museum could not trace it; A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 credited it to Poe.
- "I have crossed oceans of time to find you." Absent from Stoker's novel; usually traced to the 1992 film.
- "The best things in life make you sweaty." The Poe Museum says it is not his.
- "Words have no power to impress the mind with the exquisite horror of their reality." Genuine Poe, but from chapter 12 of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), where starving sailors drink a shipmate's blood.
- "I will be with you on your wedding-night!" Genuine Mary Shelley, but it is the creature's threat.

Where should a romantic Halloween quote go?
Put it in writing, where it gets read twice. In Floyd and colleagues' two randomised trials in Human Communication Research (2007), students who wrote about their affection for someone for 20 minutes on three occasions over five weeks saw significant drops in total cholesterol. We read only the abstract; the full text is paywalled.
| Where it goes | Which kind fits | Length to aim for | SubhSandesh data point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text message | One original line | 1–2 lines | 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone |
| Card or letter | One classic plus two lines of yours | Under 88 words | Median miss-you letter: 88 words (n=214) |
| Instagram Story | One caption line | Under 10 words | Boo License card: 1080×1920, Story size |
| Interactive page | Classic in the letter, original as the question | Question up to 60 characters | Pages average 11.1 views each |
The 88-word median covers 214 miss-you pages from the two months after that template launched on 28 July 2026, so it is not a Halloween figure; views count opens, not unique visitors.
For one person, the interactive Halloween card gives the quote a stage. They knock three times on a little haunted house, carve a jack-o'-lantern until your word glows, and read your letter by flashlight in a dark attic: put the Poe or Brontë line there. The closing question defaults to "Will you be my boo?" and takes up to 60 characters. You're emailed when they first answer.
For a longer letter, the premium Halloween page allows 3,000 characters and a 60-second voice note. For a partner in another city, the miss-you page adds "open when" letters and a reunion countdown.
When a romantic Halloween quote is the wrong choice
Skip the death-and-love classics when your person is grieving or seriously ill: "Annabel Lee" and "Remember" are about a lover who has died.
If you'll be in the same room on 31 October, a handwritten card beats any page. The Halloween card is English-only, built for one person rather than a party, and will not find you a date. On SubhSandesh 90.9% of started pages get published and shared, but that is no reason to send one where paper is warmer.
