Sharad Purnima Wishes for Kheer Night, Kojagari and Garba
Send Sharad Purnima wishes on the evening of Sunday 25 October 2026, before the moon rises at about 5:00 PM in New Delhi. That is the only full-moon night this year: the Purnima tithi starts at 11:55 AM on the 25th and ends at 9:41 AM on Monday the 26th. Most of these wishes will be read on a phone, since 48.3% of the pages shared through SubhSandesh are opened on one. People also leave festival greetings late: in our nearest measured festival, Raksha Bandhan 2026, 49.4% of 89 pages were built on the festival day itself, and the median lead time was 0 days. Different festival, small sample, same lesson: you will probably write on Sunday afternoon.
Below: the 2026 date split, original wishes for five traditions, and greetings in four Indian scripts.
The 2026 date problem: one full-moon night, two calendar days
Purnima runs from 11:55 AM IST on 25 October to 9:41 AM IST on 26 October 2026, per Drik Panchang's Sharad Purnima page for New Delhi. Only the night of the 25th has the full moon overhead, so the kheer, the vigil and the garba all happen that night.
Kojagari Lakshmi Puja follows the same night. Drik Panchang's Kojagara page says the puja belongs to the day when Purnima covers midnight (Nishitha). In 2026 that is Sunday, with the midnight window at 10:56 to 11:46 PM in Kolkata and 11:40 PM to 12:31 AM in New Delhi.
Purnima still runs on Monday morning until 9:41 AM, which is why some calendars print the 26th. A wish that arrives Monday evening has missed the moon.
Drik Panchang puts Sharad Purnima 2027 on Thursday 14 October for New Delhi, with the tithi from 6:49 PM that day to 7:16 PM on the 15th. The Odisha regional holiday list on Office Holidays shows Kumar Purnima on Friday 15 October 2027. Check your own panjika before you schedule anything.
What is Sharad Purnima?
Sharad Purnima is the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashwin, in the autumn (sharad) season. It falls five days after Dussehra (Tuesday 20 October in 2026) and closes the stretch Navratri opens.
The same night carries several names. It is Kojagari or Kojagara Purnima where Lakshmi is worshipped, Kumar Purnima in Odisha and Raas Purnima in the Braj region. Drik Panchang also records Kaumudi Vrat as another name for the Kojagara fast.
Sharad Purnima wishes, tradition by tradition
Each tradition gets the same fields: where, the rite, the 2026 timing, and three original wishes.
1. Kheer under the moonlight
Where: across north and central India. The rite: rice kheer made with milk is left out in the moonlight overnight and eaten in the morning as prasad, because the moon's rays are believed to drip nectar on this night. 2026 timing: set the bowl out after the 5:00 PM moonrise on the 25th.
Udaipur has its own version. A 2024 ethnobotanical study by Vartika Jain in the Journal of Traditional and Folk Practices documents chapda, a glass-like sugarcane sweet made only on Sharad Purnima, set out in the full moonlight and sold for ₹30 to ₹50 a piece.
- "May tonight's moon sweeten your kheer and everything else on the table. Happy Sharad Purnima."
- "One bowl on the terrace, the whole family waiting till morning. Wishing you a full moon and a fuller house."
- "Leave the kheer out, leave the worries in. Happy Sharad Purnima from all of us."
2. Kojagari Lakshmi Puja
Where: West Bengal, Odisha and Assam, as Drik Panchang lists them. The rite: Lakshmi is worshipped at night, and the vigil gives the fast its name. Lakshmi is believed to visit on this night and bless those who stay awake. 2026 timing: the Nishitha window, 10:56 to 11:46 PM in Kolkata on the 25th.
Staying up may come naturally. A 2021 study in Science Advances by Casiraghi and colleagues tracked sleep with wrist monitors in Toba/Qom communities in Argentina and 464 Seattle students. In both groups, people fell asleep later and slept less in the 3 to 5 nights before a full moon.
- "Ma Lakshmi is asking who is awake tonight. May she find your lamp lit and your door open."
- "Stay up a little longer tonight. Wishing you Lakshmi's footsteps on your alpana and peace in your home."
- "Shubho Kojagari Lakshmi Puja. May the moon keep you company until the conch sounds."
3. Kumar Purnima in Odisha
Where: Odisha, where the day is a regional holiday on Sunday 25 October 2026. The rite: OrissaPOST's 2019 report from Bhubaneswar describes unmarried girls fasting and greeting the sun with a kula holding fried paddy and 7 fruits. In the evening they break the fast by offering a dish of that paddy, fruit, curd and jaggery to the moon before the tulsi plant. 2026 timing: the evening offering after the 4:34 PM moonrise in Bhubaneswar. Office Holidays notes that 11 days of Gajalaxmi Puja start on this day.
- "Kumar Purnima greetings to the girls of the house. May the moon answer every song you sing tonight."
- "New clothes, a full kula and the biggest moon of the year. Have a joyful Kumar Purnima."
- "Wishing you a moonlit evening of games, swings and laughter. Happy Kumar Purnima."
4. Raas Purnima for Krishna devotees
Where: the Braj region (Mathura and Vrindavan) and Krishna temples elsewhere. The rite: Drik Panchang tells the belief that Krishna danced the Maha-Raas with the gopis on this night, and stretched it to the length of one of Brahma's nights. 2026 timing: temple programmes run through the night of the 25th.
The moonlit vigil is old. A 2023 review in the journal Ayu describes Kaumudi Mahotsava, called Kaumudi Jagara (the Kaumudi vigil) in the Kamasutra, as a night of singing, dancing and lamp-lit streets, though it dates that festival to the Kartika full moon, not Ashwin's.
- "May the flute you hear tonight be the one that calls you home. Radhe Radhe, and a blessed Raas Purnima."
- "One moon, a thousand gopis, and room in the circle for you. Happy Sharad Purnima."
- "Wishing you a night long enough for every song you have been saving."
5. Sharad Purnima garba night in Gujarat
Where: Gujarat, and Gujarati societies wherever they live. The rite: the circles come back for one more night. Navratri ends on Monday 19 October 2026, and on Sunday 25 October the garba starts again under the full moon. 2026 timing: moonrise is at 5:25 PM in Ahmedabad.
- "Navratri ended, the moon did not get the memo. See you in the circle tonight."
- "One more garba, one more round, one full moon. Happy Sharad Purnima."
- "Save me the spot next to you. It's the last garba of the season and the brightest."
If one particular person should be in that circle with you, that is the one reader the Be My Dandiya Partner invitation suits. You add nine short lines, up to six photos and the night's date, time, venue and dress code. They open it in a phone browser with no app, light nine diyas, and get a 1080×1920 Dandiya Pass once they say yes. The No button turns into a second Yes after five tries. Set the date to 25 October, because an empty date prints "Any night you pick". The page is in English and built for one person, so it is the wrong tool for your society or office group.
Sharad Purnima greetings in Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia
Greetings in 4 scripts, each with romanisation and an English gloss, all written for this page.
Hindi: शरद पूर्णिमा की चाँदनी आपके घर को सुख और सुकून से भर दे। Sharad Purnima ki chandni aapke ghar ko sukh aur sukoon se bhar de. May Sharad Purnima's moonlight fill your home with happiness and calm.
Gujarati: શરદ પૂનમની ચાંદની રાતે ગરબા અને ખુશીઓ તમારા આંગણે રમે. Sharad Poonamni chandni raate garba ane khushio tamara aangane rame. On this moonlit Sharad Poonam night, may garba and joy dance in your courtyard.
Bengali: কোজাগরী লক্ষ্মীপূজার শুভেচ্ছা। মা লক্ষ্মী আপনার ঘরে চিরকাল থাকুন। Kojagori Lokkhipujar shubhechchha. Ma Lokkhi apnar ghore chirokal thakun. Kojagari Lakshmi Puja greetings. May Ma Lakshmi stay in your home forever.
Odia: କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମାର ଅନେକ ଶୁଭେଚ୍ଛା। Kumar Purnimara aneka shubhechha. Many good wishes for Kumar Purnima.
Use the name the recipient's family uses: Sharad Poonam in Gujarat, Kojagori Lokkhi Puja in Bengal.
Which wish fits which night
Five traditions, one date. Times are Drik Panchang's for 25 October 2026.
| Tradition | Where | Key time, 25 Oct 2026 | Name in the wish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kheer night | North and central India | Moonrise 5:00 PM (New Delhi) | Sharad Purnima, the kheer |
| Kojagari Lakshmi Puja | West Bengal, Odisha, Assam | Nishitha 10:56–11:46 PM (Kolkata) | Lakshmi, staying awake |
| Kumar Purnima | Odisha | Moonrise 4:34 PM (Bhubaneswar) | The moon, the girls' fast |
| Raas Purnima | Braj, Krishna temples | Tithi from 11:55 AM | Krishna, the flute, the Raas |
| Garba night | Gujarat | Moonrise 5:25 PM (Ahmedabad) | Sharad Poonam, the circle |
The safe default names the moon and the recipient's own tradition, not a generic Lakshmi blessing for a friend heading to garba.
When a WhatsApp line beats a personalised page
Most Sharad Purnima wishes go to a family group, and a WhatsApp line is right for that. SubhSandesh has no Sharad Purnima template, and the Dandiya Partner page is new, so we have no usage data for it.
A page earns its place when the wish is for one person. On SubhSandesh, 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it, which suits a private note, not a group forward.
If the person you would share the kheer with is in another city this year, the I miss you page fits better than a garba invitation.
Timing is the other limit. If the Raksha Bandhan pattern holds, about half of you will build on Sunday itself. Finish before the 5:00 PM moonrise; a wish that lands after midnight in Kolkata has missed the Kojagari vigil.
