- • Plan Halloween night in four blocks: 5–7 pm doorstep, 7–9 pm dinner, 9–11 pm late, 11 pm–midnight send.
- • The riskiest hours are early: UK data shows child road casualties rise 17:00–18:59 on Halloween, and CDC counted a fourfold rise in US child pedestrian deaths between 4 and 10 pm.
- • Joel Best found no substantiated case of a child killed or seriously injured by a contaminated trick-or-treat sweet; check for allergens and choking risks instead.
- • Peanut-induced anaphylaxis in Canadian children ran at 1.86 times the usual rate on Halloween, which is what the teal pumpkin bowl is for.
- • A midnight message will likely be read on a phone: 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on one (platform-wide, not Halloween data).

Things to Do on Halloween Night: A 5 pm to Midnight Plan
The best things to do on Halloween night depend on which two hours you have: 5 to 7 pm belongs to small children and the front door, 7 to 9 pm to dinners and teenagers, 9 to 11 pm to friends, and the last hour to a quiet message. Below are 28 ideas sorted by who you are, each with a time slot, an estimated cost and indoor or outdoor.
If your night ends with a midnight message, plan for a phone: 48.3% of the pages people make on SubhSandesh are opened on one. People also leave these things late: on Raksha Bandhan 2026, a different festival and a small sample of 89 pages, 49.4% were built on the day itself.
Costs are our US-dollar estimates. Safety numbers come from CDC and UK crash data.
The 5 pm to midnight template, in four blocks
Halloween is 31 October every year, a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. The night runs in four blocks, and the first is the riskiest outdoors.
- 5–7 pm, the doorstep block. Small children trick-or-treat. UK crash data shows child road casualties rise between 17:00 and 18:59.
- 7–9 pm, the dinner block. Sweets get sorted, teenagers head out, couples eat.
- 9–11 pm, the late block. Parties and pubs; the door goes quiet.
- 11 pm–midnight, the send block. Check everyone is home; send one message.
28 things to do on Halloween night, by who you are
Each idea carries a time slot, estimated cost and indoor or outdoor. Couples get two lines, because date nights have their own guides.
1. Solo, including an introvert's night in
A night alone can be a choice, not a gap. These keep it deliberate.
- Radio-horror hour (9–10 pm · est. $0 · indoor): The War of the Worlds first aired on 30 October 1938.
- One classic horror story, start to finish (10–11 pm · est. $0 · indoor): Poe is public domain and short.
- A late screening, alone (8–10 pm · est. $10–18 · out): single seats are easy to find.
- A letter to next year's you (11–11:30 pm · est. $0 · indoor): open it next 31 October.
2. Families with young kids
Aim for an early loop and home by bedtime. Work back from 8 pm lights-out.
- Visibility check (4:45 pm · est. $5–10 · indoor): reflective tape, torches, face paint not masks.
- The early-light loop (5–6:30 pm · est. $0 · outdoor): one street and back, crossing only at corners.
- Kitchen-table candy sort (6:45–7:15 pm · est. $0 · indoor): check wrappers, keep two pieces for tonight.
- Bath, pyjamas, one gentle story (7:30–8 pm · est. $0 · indoor): end on something cosy.
3. Teens
Teens want independence; parents want a check-in. These give both.
- Lead a younger sibling's route (5–6:30 pm · est. $0 · outdoor): torch-bearer, paid in first pick.
- Group costume photo walk (7–8:30 pm · est. $0 · outdoor): three or more, one street, a text home at 8:30.
- A 60-second horror short on a phone (8:30–10 pm · est. $0 · indoor or outdoor): one jump scare, edited.
- Sleepover with an agreed pickup time (10 pm–late · est. $10–20 · indoor): films agreed by age rating.
4. Friends
Friends own the late block. Book ticketed things early: Halloween is a weekend night in 2026 and 2027.
- Horror-themed escape room (7–8:30 pm · est. $25–40 a person · indoor): a fixed end time.
- Halloween karaoke (9–11 pm · est. $10–25 a person · indoor): Monster Mash and Thriller are compulsory.
- Costume pub crawl (9 pm–midnight · est. $30–60 a person · out): three stops, ride home booked first.
- Late diner debrief (11 pm–midnight · est. $10–15 a person · indoor): rank the outfits over pancakes.
5. Couples
Our Halloween date guides cover date nights in depth. These two suit the night itself.
- Costume dinner booked for 7 pm (7–9 pm · est. $40–100 · indoor): ahead of the party crowd.
- The midnight swap (11:45 pm–midnight · est. $0 · indoor): one message each, landing at 12.
6. The candy host at the door
Your night is 5 to 8 pm, outdoors. Make it easy and visible.
- Doorstep station (5–8 pm · est. $20–40 in sweets · outdoor): bowl at the path's end, so nobody climbs dark steps.
- A teal pumpkin bowl (5–8 pm · est. $10–15 · outdoor): stickers or glow bracelets in a separate bowl. More below.
- Costume tally (5–8 pm · est. $0 · outdoor): witches versus skeletons, posted to your street's chat.
- Porch light off (8:30 pm · est. $0 · indoor): a dark porch says you are done.
7. Working the night shift or stuck at work
Ten minutes of a break is enough. None of these breaks a uniform rule.
- Shared treat bowl (start of shift · est. $10 · indoor): fun-size sweets in the break room.
- One costume accessory (all shift · est. $5 · indoor): cat ears or a pumpkin badge.
- A message scheduled for midnight (any break · est. $0 · indoor): written at 7 pm, opened at 12.
8. Not celebrating, but marking the night quietly
Opting out is fine. These mark the evening without joining in.
- Polite note on the door (5 pm · est. $0 · indoor): "No sweets tonight, happy Halloween."
- A candle for someone you have lost (9–9:30 pm · est. $3 · indoor): All Saints' Day is 1 November and Día de los Muertos 1–2 November.
- An early, offline night (9 pm onwards · est. $0 · indoor): do not disturb on.
Which 2-hour block suits you?
This table groups the eight sections into five rows by best block and estimated cost. It is a planning start, not a quote.
| Who you are | Best 2-hour block | Est. cost | Indoor or outdoor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Families with children under 9 | 5–7 pm | $5–15 | Outdoor, then indoor |
| Candy host or night shift | 5–7 pm | $10–40 | Doorstep or workplace |
| Teens or couples | 7–9 pm | $0–20 teens; $40–100 couples | Outdoor for teens, indoor for couples |
| Friends | 9–11 pm | $10–60 a person | Indoor or out |
| Solo, introvert or not celebrating | 9–11 pm | $0–18 | Indoor |
The cheapest nights are the quiet ones. Most outdoor time sits in the first block, the riskiest on the roads.
If it rains on 31 October: 5 plan-B swaps
Rain hits the outdoor 5 to 7 pm block hardest. Each swap keeps the slot and moves inside.
- Indoor trick-or-treat (5–6 pm · est. $5): each room becomes a door.
- Shorter loop, umbrellas, no masks (5–5:45 pm · est. $0): wet masks slip.
- Doorstep moves to the hall (5–8 pm · est. $0): bowl inside the open door.
- Photo walk becomes a home photoshoot (7–8:30 pm · est. $0): one lamp, one sheet.
- Crawl becomes one venue (9 pm–midnight · est. $20–40 a person): pick one and stay.
Halloween night safety: the 5–7 pm road risk, candy checks and the teal pumpkin
The real Halloween hazard is traffic, not sweets. A CDC report on 1975–1996 US crash data counted 89 pedestrian deaths among 5- to 14-year-olds between 4 and 10 pm on 31 October, about four a year against one on other evenings. It named midblock crossing, dark costumes and masks as risks and urged constant adult supervision.
Britain shows the same window. Hsu and colleagues' 2021 study of 73,587 child road casualties, 1990–2017, found more casualties between 17:00 and 18:59 on Halloween than on other days, and 34.2% higher odds of death or serious injury between 17:00 and 17:59.
Poisoned sweets are mostly legend. Sociologist Joel Best, who has tracked Halloween sadism reports since a 1985 study of four US newspapers, writes that he has been "unable to find a substantiated report of a child being killed or seriously injured by a contaminated treat picked up in the course of trick-or-treating." The infamous 1974 Texas cyanide death was a father poisoning his own son.
So check for real dangers: bin anything unwrapped or homemade from strangers, remove choking-size pieces for under-5s, read allergen labels. Best notes hospital X-rays cannot detect drugs or poisons anyway.
Allergy is the bigger candy risk. In a Canadian study of 1,390 child anaphylaxis cases from 2011 to 2020, peanut-induced anaphylaxis on Halloween ran at 1.86 times the rate of the rest of the year. The Teal Pumpkin Project from FARE, adopted nationally in 2014, asks hosts to offer non-food treats in a separate bowl.
The midnight send: a Halloween card for one person
The last block is for the one person you did not spend the evening with. Our interactive Halloween card is built for that, not for parties. You add their name, a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve; they knock three times, carve a jack-o'-lantern until your word glows and read your letter by flashlight.
It ends with "Will you be my boo?" and a Boo License, with modes for a partner, best friend, family or kids. Platform-wide, not Halloween data, 90.9% of started pages are published and each averages 11.1 views.
If you will be asleep or working at midnight, the premium Halloween page has an optional unlock time. Until then the link shows only their name and a countdown, so you can send it at 7 pm and have it open at 12.
When this plan, or a midnight card, is the wrong choice
A timetable is wrong for a toddler who is done by 5:40 pm; follow the child. It is also wrong if your town moves trick-or-treat off a Sunday Halloween, as in 2027.
A card loses to a knock on the door when the person is in the same building, and to a phone call for a grandparent without a smartphone. The interface is English only, and since only 48.3% of opens are on a phone, test it on a laptop too.
