- • Halloween is fixed on 31 October: Saturday in 2026, Sunday in 2027, Tuesday in 2028, Wednesday in 2029 and Thursday in 2030.
- • The next Saturday Halloween after 2026 is 2037; 31 October 2031 is a Friday.
- • The date comes from All Saints' Day on 1 November: a peer-reviewed liturgy history dates the feast's move to 1 November to 835 and finds a 31 October vigil Mass in the Gregorian Sacramentary.
- • UK clocks go back on the last Sunday of October (25 October 2026; 31 October 2027, Halloween itself) and US clocks on the first Sunday of November, so for one week in 2026 New York is only 4 hours behind London.
- • At Raksha Bandhan 2026, SubhSandesh's nearest measured festival (n = 89), 49.4% of greeting pages were built on the day itself, so timing for the recipient's evening matters more than booking ahead.

When Is Halloween? Halloween 2026 Date and the Next 5 Years
Halloween is 31 October every year, so the Halloween 2026 date is Saturday 31 October 2026. In 2027 it falls on Sunday 31 October and in 2028 on Tuesday 31 October; only the weekday moves, never the date. Below are weekdays to 2030, the date's ninth-century origin, nearby dates, holiday status, trick-or-treat hours and time zones.
That fixed date matters because most greetings get made on the day, not before it. At the nearest festival SubhSandesh has measured, Raksha Bandhan 2026 (89 pages, a small sample and a different festival), 49.4% of greeting pages were built on the festival day itself and the median lead time was 0 days. Across the platform, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone.
Halloween 2026 to 2030: weekday, weekend and clock changes
The weekday shifts because 365 days is 52 weeks plus a day, and leap years add a second, which is why 2028 skips Monday. Every weekday below was checked by date arithmetic; the clock-change dates follow the UK and US rules explained further down.
| Year | Weekday of 31 October | Weekend or school night | UK clocks go back | US clocks go back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Saturday | Weekend | Sun 25 October | Sun 1 November |
| 2027 | Sunday | Weekend, school next day | Sun 31 October (Halloween itself) | Sun 7 November |
| 2028 | Tuesday | School night | Sun 29 October | Sun 5 November |
| 2029 | Wednesday | School night | Sun 28 October | Sun 4 November |
| 2030 | Thursday | School night | Sun 27 October | Sun 3 November |
The takeaway: 2026 and 2027 are the last weekend Halloweens until 2032, which is a Sunday. The next Saturday Halloween is 2037, not 2031 as at least one widely read almanac page currently claims; 31 October 2031 is a Friday.
Why is Halloween always on 31 October?
Halloween is the eve of All Saints' Day, the Christian feast held on 1 November, and its name is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve. All Saints' Day is a fixed-date feast rather than one tied to Easter or the moon, so its eve is fixed too. Celtic customs such as Samhain shaped the folk side of the night, but the date itself comes from the church calendar.
The 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia entry on All Saints' Day says Pope Gregory III (731–741) consecrated a chapel in St Peter's Basilica to all the saints and fixed its anniversary on 1 November. Gregory IV (827–844) then extended the 1 November feast to the whole Church, and the vigil seems to have been kept as early as the feast itself.
A peer-reviewed history of the feast's Mass texts by Jan Szczych in Ruch Biblijny i Liturgiczny (2009) dates the steps a little differently. It lists the Pantheon's dedication to Mary and all the martyrs in 609, the St Peter's oratory in 741, and the move of the feast to 1 November in 835, during Gregory IV's papacy. It also shows the Hadrianum form of the Gregorian Sacramentary, with texts attributed to Alcuin (died 804), carrying a separate Mass for 31 October, "in vigilia omnium sanctorum": the vigil of All Saints, the night English later shortened to Halloween.
What else falls around Halloween? 31 October to 7 November
Several neighbours never move either, and two clock changes sit beside it. With the 2026 weekday in brackets:
- All Saints' Day, 1 November (Sunday in 2026): the feast Halloween is the eve of.
- All Souls' Day, 2 November (Monday): the Catholic day of prayer for the dead.
- Día de los Muertos, 1–2 November (Sunday and Monday): Mexico's Day of the Dead, which starts the day after Halloween.
- Bonfire Night, 5 November (Thursday in 2026, Friday in 2027): the UK's fireworks night, five days after Halloween.
- US daylight saving ends on the first Sunday in November: 1 November 2026 and 7 November 2027.
- UK clocks go back on the last Sunday in October: 25 October 2026 and 31 October 2027.
The two clock changes are where most calendars go wrong. Under 15 U.S.C. §260a, US daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November; a 2005 amendment (Pub. L. 109–58) replaced the old rule of the last Sunday of October, which in some years fell before Halloween. The UK's Summer Time Order 2002 ends British Summer Time at 1 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday in October, so Britain always changes first.
In 2026 the gap is a full week, and the American change lands the morning after Halloween. In 2027 the British change happens at 2 a.m. on Halloween morning itself.
Is Halloween a public holiday?
No. Halloween is not a public holiday in the United States, the United Kingdom or Canada, so schools, banks and offices keep normal hours whenever 31 October falls on a weekday.
How this was checked: the US federal list in 5 U.S.C. §6103 names 11 legal public holidays, from New Year's Day to Christmas Day, and 31 October is not among them. The UK government's bank-holiday lists for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland show nothing between the August bank holiday and either St Andrew's Day (30 November, Scotland) or Christmas in 2026 and 2027.
Canada's federal list for 2026 jumps from Thanksgiving on 12 October to Remembrance Day on 11 November. Australia sets holidays state by state, and New South Wales's lists for 2026 and 2027 run from Labour Day in early October straight to Christmas. India's 2026 central holiday list would not load when we checked, so treat India as unconfirmed here and check your state's gazette.
What time does trick-or-treating start, and do towns move it?
There is no national rule: trick-or-treat hours are local custom, sometimes set by a city council. Where towns publish hours, a common window is dusk to about 8 p.m.; Poquoson, Virginia, kept exactly that window in 2021.
Those hours are also the riskiest on the road. A JAMA Pediatrics study of 42 years of US crash data (Staples, Yip and Redelmeier, 2019) compared 5 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on 31 October with the same hours a week before and after. Pedestrian deaths were 43% higher on Halloween, peaked around 6 p.m., and children aged 4 to 8 faced a 10-fold higher risk, although the absolute risk was small and roughly halved between the first and last decades studied.
Moving trick-or-treat happens mostly when Halloween falls on a Sunday, which it next does in 2027. In 2021, the last Sunday Halloween, Poquoson City Council voted 7–0 to hold trick-or-treating on Saturday 30 October, with members stressing they were "not changing the holiday, just trick-or-treat". Some residents objected that the switch caused confusion. Expect the same debate before Sunday 31 October 2027, so check your council's announcement in mid-October rather than assuming either day.
When is it Halloween in Sydney, London, Delhi and New York?
Halloween starts in the Pacific and travels west, so 31 October lasts about 49 hours somewhere on Earth. In 2026 it begins at Kiritimati in Kiribati (UTC+14) at 6 a.m. on 30 October, New York time, and ends in American Samoa (UTC−11) at 6 a.m. on 1 November, New York time.
The offsets on 31 October, checked against the IANA time-zone database for 2026, 2027 and 2028:
- Sydney: UTC+11, because daylight time began in early October. Sydney is 15 hours ahead of New York, so its Halloween starts at 9 a.m. on 30 October in New York and 6:30 p.m. on 30 October in India.
- Delhi and Mumbai: UTC+5:30, which is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York on Halloween. Once US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, the gap widens to 10 hours 30 minutes.
- London: UTC+0 in 2026 because the clocks went back on 25 October. For that one week New York is only 4 hours behind London instead of the usual 5.
- New York: UTC−4, still on daylight time. Los Angeles is UTC−7.
So 7 p.m. on Halloween in Sydney is 4 a.m. that day in New York, and 7 p.m. in London is 3 p.m. in New York in 2026. Send for their evening, not yours.
Sending a Halloween greeting on the day, and when not to
With a fixed date and same-day building, the real question is when the other person will open what you send. Platform-wide, 90.9% of SubhSandesh pages that are started get published and shared, and each page averages 11.1 views, so a finished greeting tends to be reopened rather than glanced at once.
The interactive Halloween card takes about five minutes: their name and yours, a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on a pumpkin. The recipient knocks three times on a little haunted house, carves the jack-o'-lantern, reads your letter by flashlight and answers "Will you be my boo?", and you get an email the first time they answer. It has partner, bestie, family and kids modes but no scheduler, so you send the private link yourself; for a partner in Sydney, send it in their evening.
If you would rather send early and have it open on the night, the premium Halloween page has an optional unlock time: until then the link shows only their name and a countdown. It also adds a voice note of up to 60 seconds and up to 12 photos. For a partner abroad where the real message is "I miss you", the miss-you page says that more directly.
When a greeting page is the wrong choice
A link does nothing for the children ringing your bell between dusk and 8 p.m.; the card is a one-person greeting, not a party invitation. It is a poor fit for a household that keeps Sunday free of Halloween, as some will in 2027. The interface is English only, and a parent out trick-or-treating until 8 p.m. may not open anything until the next morning.
