- • Put outdoor Halloween decorations up on the first weekend of October: Saturday 3 October 2026 or Saturday 2 October 2027.
- • Lights belong in the final week: London sunset falls from 18:40 on 1 October to 16:37 on 31 October.
- • Florida's § 720.3045 protects only items not visible from the frontage, so front-yard displays still follow HOA rules.
- • Take Halloween-only pieces down on 1 November, ahead of All Souls' Day and Día de los Muertos altars on 2 November.
- • Greetings get made late: 49.4% of SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the day itself (n = 89, a different festival).

When to Put Up Halloween Decorations, and When to Take Them Down
The simplest answer to when to put up Halloween decorations is the first weekend of October: Saturday 3 October 2026 or Saturday 2 October 2027. Add lights in the final week, then take the Halloween-only pieces down on 1 November, a Sunday in 2026 and a Monday in 2027. Personal greetings run on a much shorter clock. On SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself, and not one of 89 was built more than 7 days ahead. That is a different festival and a small sample, so read it as a hint about how late people make things, not as a Halloween figure.
Below you will find when shops stock decorations, a dated plan for 2026 and 2027, sunset times in four cities, what an HOA can and cannot restrict, and the take-down dates.
When do Halloween decorations come out in shops? Before 1 October
Shops stock Halloween well before autumn is under way, and the start moves each year, so there is no single release day. In researching this page I could not find a dated 2026 retailer announcement I could open and check, so I will not print one. Treat any exact "decorations come out on" date as marketing until you see the retailer's own notice.
What households do is easier to pin down. Writing in EMBO Reports in November 2024, columnist Lynn Kamerlin of the Georgia Institute of Technology said that in early October her Atlanta neighbourhood already had decorations up on every street. That is one street, not a survey, but it matches the 1 October habit almost every timing guide repeats.
My rule: shop in September, when choice is widest, and display from October. Buying early is not the same as decorating early, and a box in the cupboard annoys nobody.
A dated decorating plan for 2026 and 2027
The table sets out four stages with the real dates for both years. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, so the stages land on weekends in different ways.
| Stage | 2026 | 2027 | What goes up or comes down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early start | from Mon 7 Sep (US Labor Day) | from Mon 6 Sep (US Labor Day) | Indoor pieces, whole uncarved pumpkins, autumn colours |
| Main display | Sat 3 to Sun 4 Oct | Sat 2 to Sun 3 Oct | Anything that can sit outside for four weeks |
| Final week | Sat 24 to Sun 25 Oct | Sat 23 to Sun 24 Oct | Lights, inflatables, carved pumpkins |
| Take-down | Sun 1 to Mon 2 Nov | Mon 1 to Tue 2 Nov | Halloween-only pieces; autumn pieces can stay |
The takeaway: you get four full weekends of display in both years, and the take-down lands on a weekday in 2027, so plan for an evening job rather than a lazy Sunday.
Daylight: sunset moves up to two hours earlier during October
Daylight, not the calendar, decides when lights are worth switching on. These sunset times are local clock times for 1 October and 31 October, worked out from NOAA's published solar position equations; they come out the same to the minute in 2026 and 2027, give or take about two minutes.
- London: 18:40 on 1 October, 16:37 on 31 October. UK clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, and in 2027 they go back on Halloween itself, Sunday 31 October.
- New York: 18:40, then 17:55. US clocks stay on daylight time until Sunday 1 November 2026 and Sunday 7 November 2027.
- Delhi: 18:08, then 17:38, with no clock change.
- Sydney: 17:57, then 19:21. It is spring there, and daylight saving starts on Sunday 4 October 2026 and Sunday 3 October 2027.
In London a light-up display put out on 1 October glows for a few hours that hardly anyone sees. By Halloween the street is dark before 17:00, which is why lights belong in the final week. In Sydney the opposite holds: it is still daylight at 19:21 on Halloween, so spend your effort on pieces that work in daylight.
HOA, lease and council rules: what Florida's § 720.3045 says
Before any date, check who else has a say. Florida Statutes § 720.3045, created by chapter 2023-64 and amended by chapter 2024-221, says an association "may not restrict parcel owners or their tenants from installing, displaying, or storing any items on a parcel which are not visible from the parcel's frontage or an adjacent parcel". It also covers items not visible from an adjacent common area or a community golf course.
The flip side matters more for Halloween. A front-yard display is visible from the frontage by design, so in Florida it stays under your association's rules. Look in your declaration and rules for the words "holiday", "seasonal" and "temporary", since that is where a date window, a placement limit or a noise rule for animated props will sit.
Renters face a different check. The usual sticking point in a lease is fixing things to walls, doors or railings, not the date, so ask your landlord in writing before 1 October. In flats, the building's fire-safety rules on shared corridors usually matter more than any calendar.
When to take Halloween decorations down: 1 and 2 November
All Saints' Day is 1 November and All Souls' Day is 2 November, so the day after Halloween is a sensible line. UNESCO inscribed Mexico's indigenous Día de los Muertos festivity in 2008, describing festivities "at the end of October to the beginning of November", when families lay flower petals, candles and offerings along the path from the cemetery to their homes.
A 2020 study in Nursing Open by Hidalgo and colleagues, drawing on 32 adults from 14 countries, recorded home altars for deceased spirits, with food and water for adults and toys and candy for children. If a neighbour keeps an ofrenda, a jokey gravestone or a dangling plastic skeleton beside it on 2 November can read as careless. Take the Halloween-only pieces down on 1 November.
Autumn pieces are different. Whole pumpkins and harvest colours can stay until US Thanksgiving, Thursday 26 November 2026 or Thursday 25 November 2027. In the UK, clear straw, paper and dry leaves from doorways before Bonfire Night, Thursday 5 November 2026 or Friday 5 November 2027.
Does decorating early make you happier? No study we found says so
I looked for evidence before repeating the claim. Searches of Crossref and Europe PMC for "holiday decorations homeowners sociability", "seasonal home decoration display neighbourhood", "holiday season anticipation happiness" and "Halloween decorations" turned up no peer-reviewed study testing early Halloween decorating against wellbeing.
The closest is a 1989 Journal of Environmental Psychology paper titled "Inferences about homeowners' sociability: Impact of Christmas decorations and other cues". It is about how passers-by judge decorated homes, and Christmas rather than Halloween; it is not open access, so I read only its record. Kamerlin's 2024 column adds the counterpoint: the holiday stretch can be a lonely time for people far from family. Decorate early because you enjoy it, not because research promised a mood lift.
The greeting runs on a shorter clock than the porch
Decorations need weeks; a message to one person usually gets made at the last minute. In SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 measurement (n = 89, a different festival), 49.4% of pages were built on the day, 27.0% the day before and 11.2% after it had passed. Platform-wide, 90.9% of started pages are published and shared, and 48.3% of views happen on a phone.
Neither Halloween template is a decorating or party tool; each is a greeting page for one person. For a quick one, the interactive Halloween card with a haunted-house walk-through takes about five minutes, with up to six photos, a letter and a word carved on the pumpkin. If you plan ahead the way you plan the porch, the premium Halloween page with an unlock time and a voice note takes about ten minutes; build it in October and set the optional unlock time, and until then the link shows only their name and a countdown. It holds up to 12 photos and a 60-second voice note.
If the real plan is a walk past the street's best displays on the night, an invitation they have to answer, which turns into a countdown does that job better than either card.
When a decorating date, or a greeting page, is the wrong tool
A good date will not save a display your association bans from the frontage; take that to the board before October, not in the final week. A lit display in Sydney, where Halloween stays light until 19:21, is mostly wasted however well you time it.
The greeting pages have limits too. The interface is English only, and each page is built for one recipient rather than a crowd, so it cannot replace a street party invitation or a sign on the gate. It also needs someone who opens links: for an elderly neighbour without a smartphone, a handwritten note through the door on 31 October beats any page.
