- • A Halloween love letter runs 150 to 300 words; for scale, the typical SubhSandesh miss-you letter sits at 88 words (median, n=214, a non-Halloween template).
- • Five parts in order: a 25-word hook, a 60-word memory, a 50-word "why you", a 25-word Halloween image and a 15-word sign-off.
- • To arrive by Friday 30 October in the US, post by Monday 26 October 2026 or Monday 25 October 2027 (estimated from USPS First-Class 1-5 days).
- • A raised wax seal or ribbon can make a letter nonmachinable under USPS DMM 101, so hand-deliver waxed envelopes.
- • In a 738-person experiment, writing a letter to or from a future self cut negative mood immediately, which supports a sealed letter to open on 31 October.

Halloween Love Letter: 6 Samples and a 5-Part Way to Write One
A Halloween love letter is a 150–300-word letter to your partner that borrows one October image, such as a carved pumpkin or a dark porch, to say something only you could say to them. Below: three full letters, three outlines and a five-part method.
Two SubhSandesh numbers set the scale: the median miss-you letter on our platform is 88 words, and 86.4% of miss-you pages include at least one written memory (n=214, measured 25 September 2026; not Halloween data). These letters run about twice that, the room one real memory needs. Aim it at 31 October (weekday: Saturday for 2026, Sunday for 2027).
What turns a letter into a Halloween love letter?
It is a full letter rather than a text: an opening, one real memory, a reason you love them, a Halloween image and a sign-off, in 150 to 300 words. A text fits a phone screen; a letter goes in a drawer.
Keep the Halloween part light; people open love letters to read about themselves. Miss-you senders on SubhSandesh add 4.5 memories on average, but in our view one memory told slowly beats four listed quickly.
6 Halloween love letters: 3 in full, 3 outlined
Replace every bracket with your own detail. Letters 4 to 6 give the bones only.
1. A Halloween letter to your boyfriend
Dear [his name], I've been trying to write this since the night you spent forty minutes carving a pumpkin that came out looking like a worried potato. You were so proud of it. You lit it, set it on the step, and went back out twice to check the candle.
That's why I'm writing. You check on things. You checked on me the week my phone died and I went silent for a day, and you never made it sound like a favour. Plenty of people are kind when it suits them. You are kind on a cold step in October, for a vegetable.
So this Halloween, know that I see it: the second trip outside, and the way you remember which sweets I pinch from the bowl. Keep the worried potato going every year. I'll hold the torch.
Yours, every 31st, [your name]
2. A Halloween letter to your girlfriend or partner
My love, last October you made me walk the long way home to see the house on the corner with the giant spider on its roof. You stood in the drizzle and named it Gerald. You still ask after Gerald whenever we pass, even in April.
That's the thing I love most and say least. You name what nobody else notices, then you keep caring about it: the stray cat at the station, my terrible first CV, and me, back when I was a stranger talking too much at [where you met].
Tonight everyone pretends to be someone else. It's also the night I notice most that I never have to pretend with you. Here's to another October of long ways home. I'll bring the umbrella, and Gerald can keep his roof.
All of me, [your name]
3. A letter to open on 31 October after a hard year
Open on 31 October. Hi, you. If you're reading this, we got to Halloween. I wrote this in [month], on a day when that didn't feel certain, and I wanted the person writing to speak to the person reading.
These twelve months were heavy. They took [the job / the move / the plans we had], and some weeks they took our words too. You kept making tea anyway. You left the hall light on whenever I came home late, and I noticed every time.
A pumpkin on the step is not a cure. But it is a small light in a dark month, which is what you've been for me since [the hardest week]. So no big plans unless you want them: a blanket, the scary film you'll talk through, and me, still here.
I'm proud of us. I love you. [Your name]
4. An October anniversary letter (outline, 200–250 words)
- Opening hook: "[Number] Octobers ago, neither of us knew who the other would become."
- Memory: the first date's weather.
- Why you: one habit that has lasted.
- Halloween image: a new costume yearly, the same person underneath.
- Sign-off: "Happy anniversary. Same porch, next October?"
5. A long-distance Halloween letter (outline, 180–220 words)
- Opening hook: both cities, both local times.
- Memory: the last station goodbye.
- Why you: how they show up from afar.
- Halloween image: two pumpkins carved over one video call.
- Sign-off: the reunion date as a promise; 28.0% of miss-you senders on our platform set one (n=214).
6. A spooky-funny Halloween letter (outline, 150–200 words)
- Opening hook: a formal notice, "To whom it may haunt."
- Memory: the jump scare that sent their popcorn flying.
- Why you: one sincere paragraph where the joke stops.
- Halloween image: "You're the only ghost I'd let move in rent-free."
- Sign-off: "Yours, in a mildly haunted way."
Writing your own Halloween love letter in 5 parts
Write them in order; the budgets total about 175 words, twice the 88-word median.
- Opening hook (25 words): start inside a moment, never with "Happy Halloween".
- One memory (60 words): a place, a sentence they said, something that went wrong.
- Why you (50 words): the trait that memory proves.
- Halloween image (25 words): one object, tied back to them.
- Sign-off (15 words): a promise about next October.
In a randomised online experiment with 738 Japanese adults, Chishima, Liu and Wilson (2021) found that writing to or from one's future self brought an immediate fall in negative mood against a control group. It measured writers in lockdown, not couples, yet it supports sealing letter 3; Catty and Salisbury (2026) call letters "waiting objects" whose delay becomes a form of care.
Fill in one of these ten openings:
- "I've started this letter [number] times."
- "Before the doorbell starts ringing, read this."
- "Remember [place] last October? I remember everything."
- "This is the least frightening thing you'll open today."
- "You once told me [what they said]. I still think about it."
- "You pick a costume every year. I picked words."
- "It's [time], the candle is lit, and you're on my mind."
- "I kept this sealed until tonight on purpose."
- "There's a [object] on my desk that is secretly about you."
- "Halloween is for what hides in the dark, so here's mine."
And ten closings for the line before your name:
- "Same porch, same sweets, same me, next year too."
- "I'll be the hand you grab at the scary bit."
- "Yours through every October still to come."
- "Wear the [costume]. I'll love it more than you expect."
- "Come home safe; I've left the light on."
- "After midnight, I'm one knock away."
- "Keep this where you'll find it next Halloween."
- "No tricks. Just this, and me, and [nickname]."
- "Sealed in [colour] wax, meant completely."
- "Write back in one line. I'll keep that too."
Which Halloween love letter fits which moment?
Here are the six letters by length, tone and moment; the moments are our recommendations, not measured data.
| Letter type | Length | Tone | Best moment to give it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boyfriend, girlfriend or partner (1–2) | 150–170 words | Warm, specific | Morning of 31 October |
| After a hard year (3) | 150–170 words | Quiet, steady | Evening of 31 October, sealed until then |
| October anniversary (4) | 200–250 words | Nostalgic | Dinner on the anniversary |
| Long distance (5) | 180–220 words | Tender, hopeful | Posted to land by 30 October |
| Spooky-funny (6) | 150–200 words | Playful, one sincere turn | In a costume pocket before a party |
Serious letters work best opened late in the day. Funny ones can go early.
How to post a Halloween love letter so it arrives on time
USPS First-Class Mail, for letters up to 3.5 oz, takes 1–5 days according to USPS. To reach them by Friday 30 October, post a US letter by Monday 26 October 2026 or Monday 25 October 2027; our estimate, not a guarantee. Elsewhere, allow a week across borders (estimated).
Write on heavy paper so ink won't show through, in a black or deep orange envelope. Put the address on a white label so it stays readable.
USPS's mail manual, DMM 101, lists strings, clasps and contents of uneven thickness among features that make a letter nonmachinable. A raised wax seal, ribbon or pressed flower can send it to hand sorting, so hand-deliver the waxed version or seal the letter inside instead.
Can you send a Halloween love letter as a page instead?
You can. A page suits a partner far away, and our pages are read on phones nearly half the time (48.3% of views). With the interactive Halloween card, they knock at a miniature haunted house, light a jack-o'-lantern bearing your word, and discover your letter in an attic by torchlight, among your photos (six at most), before a downloadable Boo License.
Longer letters fit the premium Halloween page: room for 3,000 characters, enough for any letter here (our estimate), with a sealed P.S. An optional unlock time shows just their name beside a countdown, which suits letter 3. Add a voice note (one minute max); they can answer once, in 280 characters, straight to your inbox.
For distance, the long-distance train-ticket letter frames it as a ticket whose waitlist clears as they read. It skips Halloween, which suits a letter about miles.
When a love letter is wrong for Halloween
A 300-word letter three dates in asks more than a new relationship can carry; send two lines and save the letter. Drop the ghosts if they are grieving, since 1 November (All Saints') and the day after can make the week heavy.
Digital pages carry their own limits. They only come in English, and a link cannot sit in a shoebox for twenty years the way paper can.
