I Miss You in Russian, and the Argument Russians Are Having
я скучаю по тебе takes по plus the dative. Gramota.ru ruled скучаю за тобой outside the literary language in 2018, Ushakov marks it regional, and the Russian book corpus makes it 58.6 times rarer. Plus по вам vs по вас, dated to 2012, and what 214 miss-you pages contain.

I Miss You in Russian, and the Argument Russians Are Having
I miss you in Russian is я скучаю по тебе (ya skuchayu po tebe) — по plus the dative case, sent to one person you are close to. The variant скучаю за тобой (skuchayu za toboy) is the one Russians actually argue about, and Gramota.ru, the state-backed reference portal, answered it on 8 September 2018: скучать за кем-либо «не является нормативным, выходит за рамки русского литературного языка» — not normative, outside the literary language.
That is the prescriptive verdict; the descriptive one is narrower, and this page gives both, plus the second dispute (по вам or по вас) and what 214 «I miss you» pages on SubhSandesh contain — a median letter of 88 words, and 1,434 hug taps sent back by recipients.
Is it скучаю по тебе or скучаю за тобой?
Both exist; only one is standard.
Ushakov's dictionary, compiled 1935–40, gives the verb's government as «по ком-чем или по кому-чему (за кем-чем ·обл.·)». The tag обл. is областное, regional — ninety years ago за was already filed as dialect rather than error, a softer verdict than Gramota's.
The corpus gives the size of it. In the Google Books Ngram Viewer's Russian corpus, at 2019 «скучаю по тебе» runs at 2.44 × 10⁻⁷ against 4.17 × 10⁻⁹ for «скучаю за тобой» — 58.6 times rarer, but not zero. That corpus is edited books, so a form living in speech is under-counted by construction.
Tatoeba is harder on it: 193 Russian sentences match «скучаю по тебе», none match «скучаю за тобой».
So: send по тебе. But someone who writes за тобой is using a regional form one national dictionary has recorded for ninety years and a national portal declines to admit. Neither names the region, and neither does this page.
Our fifty-language "I miss you" hub gives Russian one line and a pronunciation gloss — right for a fifty-language table, and not repeated here. This page adds the case, the two disputes and the dates the norms moved.
The four lines worth sending, and what each one says
Four constructions carry the meaning, and they are not interchangeable.
1. я скучаю по тебе (ya skuchayu po tebe)
Literally "I am bored-for you": скучать is the verb for being bored, and по takes the dative. The default written form, at 4.72 × 10⁻⁸ in the 2019 book corpus. Send it to one person you already address as ты — neutral enough to open with, warm enough to stand alone.
2. я по тебе скучаю (ya po tebe skuchayu)
The same four words, object ahead of the verb. The stock answer that the orders are "interchangeable" is roughly right but not equal: the corpus puts this at 3.53 × 10⁻⁸ against 4.72 × 10⁻⁸, about 1.34 to 1. Fronting по тебе weights you, and reads as spoken rather than written — which is why it suits a recorded line better than a typed one.
3. я так скучаю по тебе (ya tak skuchayu po tebe)
"I miss you so much." так and очень are near-identical in frequency — 6.02 × 10⁻⁹ against 5.82 × 10⁻⁹ at 2019 — so pick by rhythm, not strength. Put it mid-letter, not at the opening: an intensifier in the first sentence leaves nowhere to go, and the median letter on these pages runs 88 words, about four sentences.
4. мне тебя не хватает (mne tebya ne khvatayet)
"Of you, there is not enough for me." мне is dative, тебя genitive, and there is no grammatical subject — the missing happens to you. Endresen and Janda, in Frontiers in Psychology, November 2020, describe the pattern: the Russian dative encodes a state that "happens" to the person, implying "lack of agentivity and control". Nor is it a minor variant — at 2019 it runs at 5.07 × 10⁻⁸, slightly more frequent than «я скучаю по тебе».
What each is for, against what people build around it on SubhSandesh's own miss-you pages:
| Line | What it literally says | Books-corpus frequency, 2019 | Where it fits on a page, from 214 miss-you pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| я скучаю по тебе | "I am bored-for you", по + dative | 4.72 × 10⁻⁸ | The letter's opening line; median letter 88 words, longest 1,024 |
| я по тебе скучаю | Same words, object fronted | 3.53 × 10⁻⁸ | A spoken line — 13.6% of senders record a voice note |
| я так скучаю по тебе | "I so miss you" | 6.02 × 10⁻⁹ | Inside a memory; 86.4% of pages carry at least one, 4.5 on average |
| мне тебя не хватает | "Of you there is not enough for me" | 5.07 × 10⁻⁸ | Beside a reunion countdown; 28.0% of senders set a date |
The two most frequent lines disagree about who is doing the missing, and both are correct.
по вам or по вас, and why it only bites with вы
With ты there is nothing to choose: the dative and the prepositional of ты are both тебе, so по тебе is right whichever case you think you are using. The question appears only with вы, where the dative is вам and the prepositional вас — and there the reference books disagree in print.
Gramota's 2018 answer lays it out. Rozental's Управление в русском языке prescribes скучать по кому-чему for nouns and third-person pronouns but скучать по ком for first and second person plural — «скучаем по вас» — and the 2005 reissue still says so. Русская грамматика (1980) calls the two plain variants; Lazutkina's 2012 dictionary of grammatical combinability calls по ком-чем устарелым, obsolete. Gramota's summary: «Скучаю по вас – старая норма; по вам – новая.»
The corpus dates the handover: «скучаю по вам» first overtakes «скучаю по вас» in 2012 and has led every year since — 1.30 × 10⁻⁸ against 9.13 × 10⁻⁹ by 2019. Lazutkina declared the older government obsolete in 2012 as well, so codification and crossover land in the same year.
Practical rule: скучаю по вам to anyone you address as вы — newer norm, more frequent form, and what a 2012 reference work recommends. «Скучаю о вас», at 2.51 × 10⁻⁹, is rarest of the three and reads as literary.
Writing Russian that survives the send
Two mechanical things break this line between keyboard and screen.
Stress marks are not spelling. Dictionary entries print the headword accented — Ushakov's page shows «Скуч/а́/ть», the acute being U+0301 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT on the а. Copy the entry and you paste the mark with it. Russians do not write it; delete it.
Everything here is one Unicode block. с is U+0441, к U+043A, ч U+0447, all inside Cyrillic at U+0400–U+04FF, so any font with Cyrillic coverage renders the phrase whole.
Every romanization here is BGN/PCGN 1947, revalidated November 2022. Its Note 1 is why хватает comes out khvatayet, not khvataet: е is written ye after a vowel.
Who is searching this, and the title problem in the Russian results
English-language demand is small and American: in this batch's autocomplete harvest i miss you in russian surfaced under one prefix in the US market only and miss you in russian under two, also US-only — neither in the UK or India harvests.
Russian-language demand is much larger and badly contaminated. Of 206 ru-ru completions, 35 are screen or music queries — сериал, смотреть онлайн, актёры, дорама, OST, аккорды — and they do not all point at one title: one pairs the phrase with a thriller novelist's name, another says дорама, a Korean drama.
Russian Wikipedia has no article under the exact title «Скучаю по тебе»; the nearest is «Уже скучаю по тебе», the 2015 film Miss You Already. This page therefore names no series.
The useful rows are the argument itself: скучаю по тебе или за тобой, скучаю по тебе или за тобой как правильно and скучаю по тебе или по вас are live completions. Native speakers are asking both questions.
What 214 miss-you pages say about the words around the line
A Russian phrase is rarely sent alone. On the «I miss you» page template, 214 pages have been built since 2026-07-28 — 4.1% of 5,221 pages across 44 collections. Two months of data, so nothing here supports a seasonal claim.
Privacy stands out. 43.5% of miss-you senders password-protect the page before sharing, 93 of 214, against 38.5% platform-wide — the most private segment measured. People are careful with this sentence in a way they are not with a birthday.
Recipients answer back: across 138 of the 214 pages they tapped a hug 1,434 times, 512 on one page. The pages recorded 2,417 views, 11.3 per page, 104 on the most-opened — page views, not unique visitors, so one recipient reopening a page twenty times counts twenty.
One number needs care. The 47 city pairs those pages name, cross-border ones like Mumbai–London included, come from a 15-city picker with a default, so they describe the picker as much as the senders; same for background music and "together since". The sender-chosen fields are the password, voice note, reunion date, letter and memories.
If your real message is when rather than how much, the long-distance train ticket page fits better: скучать is imperfective, saying the state continues but never until when — and 28.0% of senders answer that by setting a reunion date.
When a Russian line is the wrong thing to send
If neither of you reads Cyrillic, transliterating is worse than sending nothing in Russian: ya skuchayu po tebe is a BGN/PCGN pronunciation aid, not a message, and reads as a party trick.
If the relationship is formal enough that you hesitated over вам versus вас, the safer move is not to send a miss-you line at all. Russian marks the ты/вы boundary explicitly, and crossing it by accident is conspicuous.
And if the person is in the same room, a page is the wrong object. Everything above concerns a sentence that has to travel; when it does not, say it.
