A love letter for a girlfriend in Kannada works when you write it in spoken Kannada, address her as ನೀನು, and send it where the script actually renders. The "I love you" page (/love-gf) is SubhSandesh's most-created template — 975 pages, 29.2% of the 3,335 built since 12 March 2026 — and its 14,396 views are 35.2% of every view recorded. Half of those views, 50.3% or 20,561 of 40,864, happen on a phone, which is where a badly pasted Kannada letter breaks.
That last part matters more than people expect. Below: six letters in Kannada script, Roman and English, the ನೀನು / ನೀವು / ತಾವು decision, and a table on which script to send.
What "spoken Kannada" means in a love letter
A Kannada love letter is a letter written in the Kannada people speak, not the Kannada taught for written composition. The two are far apart: the Central Institute of Indian Languages' language-variation profile for Kannada records a sharp distinction between the spoken and written forms, the written near-constant across Karnataka while the spoken shifts by region.
It names four major regional varieties — Mangalore/Udupi, Mysore/Bangalore, Kota/Kundapur, Hubli/Dharwad — and cites Ethnologue for roughly 20 dialects, so there is no single "correct" colloquial Kannada to copy.
Which is good news: the register you want is hers, not a textbook's. A letter carrying ಅಷ್ಟೇ, ಬೇಜಾರು and ಗೊತ್ತಾ reads as a person; ಗ್ರಂಥಿಕ (granthika, formal written) Kannada reads like a school essay about love.
ನೀನು, ನೀವು or ತಾವು: the word that sets the tone
Kannada gives you three second-person choices, not two, and it is the loudest thing in the letter. A February 2026 comparative study of Kannada and Telugu pronouns lists ನೀನು (nīnu, familiar singular), ನೀವು (nīvu, honorific singular and plural) and ತಾವು (tāvu, ultra-honorific singular) — a system English lacks, since English "you" marks neither respect nor number.
For a girlfriend it is ನೀನು. ನೀವು reads as distance, or a joke about distance; ತಾವು is what you write to a stranger's father, and here it is comic.
The edge case is a first letter to someone you are not close to yet. If you still say ನೀವು to her face, ನೀನು on paper is the bigger move.
Six love letters for a girlfriend in Kannada
Keep them short. The median gap between first save and last edit on /love-gf is 6.9 hours across 975 pages: people write, leave, then cut.
1. The first letter
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನ, ಇದನ್ನ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಅಂತ ತುಂಬಾ ದಿನದಿಂದ ಅಂದ್ಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ, ಧೈರ್ಯ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಂಗೆ ನೀನು ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟ. ಸ್ನೇಹಿತೆ ಅಂತ ಅಲ್ಲ — ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿ. ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡಲು ಆತುರ ಬೇಡ, ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಯೋಚಿಸು. ನೀನು ಬೇಡ ಅಂದ್ರೂ ನಾನು ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಹೋಗಲ್ಲ.
Roman: Chinna, idanna hēḷabēku anta tumbā dinadinda andkoṇḍidde, dhairya baralilla. Naṅge nīnu tumbā iṣṭa. Snēhite anta alla — bēre rīti. Uttara koḍalu ātura bēḍa, nidhānavāgi yōchisu. Nīnu bēḍa andrū nānu ellū hōgalla.
English: Chinna, I have wanted to say this for a long time and never had the courage. I like you a lot. Not as a friend — differently. Do not rush. Even if you say no, I am not going anywhere.
Use when: you are telling her first; the ending must remove pressure.
2. Long distance
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನು, ಇವತ್ತು ಬಸ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟದ ಹಾಡು ಬಂತು, ಎರಡು ನಿಮಿಷ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮರೆತೇ ಹೋಯ್ತು. ದೂರ ಇರೋದು ಕಷ್ಟ, ಆದ್ರೆ ನಂಗೆ ಸಂಶಯ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ಗೆ ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಬುಕ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೀನಿ, 14 ದಿನ. ಅಲ್ಲಿವರೆಗೂ ಊಟ ಮಾಡು, ನಿದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡು, ನನ್ನ ನೆನಪು ಮಾಡ್ಕೊ.
Roman: Chinnu, ivattu bus-nalli niṅge iṣṭada hāḍu bantu, eraḍu nimiṣa Bengaḷūru maretē hōytu. Dūra irōdu kaṣṭa, ādre naṅge saṃśaya illa. December-ge ticket book māḍiddīni, 14 dina. Allivaregū ūṭa māḍu, nidde māḍu, nanna nenapu māḍko.
English: Chinnu, your favourite song came on in the bus today and for two minutes I forgot Bengaluru. Distance is hard, but I have no doubt. I have booked a December ticket, 14 days. Until then: eat, sleep, think of me.
Use when: she needs a date more than an adjective.
3. After a fight
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನ, ನಿನ್ನೆ ನಾನು ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಮಾತಾಡಿದೆ. ತಪ್ಪು ನನ್ನದೇ, ಸಾರಿ. ನಿನ್ನ ಮಾತು ಮುಗಿಯೋಕೆ ಮುಂಚೆನೇ ನಾನು ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದೆ, ಅದೇ ತಪ್ಪು. ನಿಂಗೆ ಸರಿ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿದಾಗ ಕಾಲ್ ಮಾಡು. ನಾನು ಕಾಯ್ತಿರ್ತೀನಿ, ಒತ್ತಾಯ ಮಾಡಲ್ಲ.
Roman: Chinna, ninne nānu jōrāgi mātāḍide. Tappu nannadē, sorry. Ninna mātu mugiyōke munchenē nānu uttara koḍalu śuru māḍide, adē tappu. Niṅge sari annisidāga call māḍu. Nānu kāytirtīni, ottāya māḍalla.
English: Chinna, I raised my voice yesterday. The mistake was mine, sorry. I started answering before you finished speaking — that was the mistake. Call when it feels right. I will wait, not push.
Use when: the apology is the whole letter — every sentence defending yourself cancels one.
4. Her birthday
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನು, ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬದ ಶುಭಾಶಯ. ಈ ವರ್ಷ ನಿನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯ ಗಮನಿಸಿದೆ — ಯಾರೂ ನೋಡ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದಾಗಲೂ ನೀನು ಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡ್ತೀಯ. ನಿನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ಇರೋದೇ ನನ್ನ ಗಿಫ್ಟ್. ಈ ವರ್ಷ ನಿಂಗೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ನಿದ್ದೆ, ಕಡಿಮೆ ಚಿಂತೆ, ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಫಿಲ್ಟರ್ ಕಾಫಿ ಸಿಗಲಿ.
Roman: Chinnu, huṭṭuhabbada śubhāśaya. Ī varṣa ninna bagge ondu viṣaya gamaniside — yārū nōḍtilla andāgalū nīnu janakke sahāya māḍtīya. Ninna jote irōdē nanna gift. Ī varṣa niṅge jāsti nidde, kaḍime chinte, sākaṣṭu filter coffee sigali.
English: Chinnu, happy birthday. This year I noticed one thing — you help people even when nobody is watching. Being with you is the gift. May this year bring more sleep, less worry, more filter coffee.
Use when: one specific observation beats five compliments.
5. Just because
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನ, ಯಾವ ಕಾರಣವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಇವತ್ತು ಬುಧವಾರ ಅಷ್ಟೇ. ನೀನು ನಗುವಾಗ ಮೂಗು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸುಕ್ಕಾಗುತ್ತೆ. ಅದು ನಿಂಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ? ನಂಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಐ ಲವ್ ಯೂ. ಈಗ ಹೋಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡು.
Roman: Chinna, yāva kāraṇavū illa, ivattu budhavāra aṣṭē. Nīnu naguvāga mūgu svalpa sukkāguttē. Adu niṅge gottā? Naṅge gottu. I love you. Īga hōgi kelasa māḍu.
English: Chinna, no reason at all — it is Wednesday, that is all. When you laugh your nose wrinkles a little. Do you know that? I do. I love you. Now go and work.
Use when: nothing is happening. A Wednesday letter outperforms the same words on an anniversary.
6. The very short one
Kannada: ಚಿನ್ನು, ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣು ಬಿಟ್ಟಾಗ ಮೊದಲು ನಿನ್ನ ನೆನಪು. ರಾತ್ರಿ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚಿದಾಗ ಕೊನೆಗೂ ನಿನ್ನ ನೆನಪು. ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೆಲಸ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ನನ್ನ ದಿನ.
Roman: Chinnu, beḷigge kaṇṇu biṭṭāga modalu ninna nenapu. Rātri kaṇṇu muchchidāga konegū ninna nenapu. Madhyadalli svalpa kelasa. Aṣṭē nanna dina.
English: Chinnu, the first thought when I open my eyes is you. The last, when I close them, is you. A little work in between. That is my whole day.
Use when: it goes into a WhatsApp message or the top of a page.
Kannada script, romanised Kannada or English: what to send
Many Kannada speakers type Roman rather than Kannada script, and the research corpora are built on that writing. The KanCMD dataset, December 2020, is 7,671 real Kannada–English code-mixed YouTube comments, not textbook sentences.
The CoLI-Kenglish dataset from November 2022 tags Kannada YouTube comments word by word as Kannada, English, Mixed-language, Name, Location or Other, where "Mixed-language" covers Roman-script hybrids like homealli (home + alli); its best model reached a 0.64 macro F1. A 2023 study of English–Kannada code-switched text needed a character-level n-gram model to reach 97.9% accuracy merely separating monolingual from code-switched lines.

If you can type Kannada, send Kannada script. If not, romanised Kannada beats English: translating your own feelings is the option that loses something on the way.
Which page each Kannada letter belongs on
For Kannada script the answer is usually not a chat app. Put the letter on a page: the romantic "I love you" page for a girlfriend holds the letter, a gallery, a song, notes, games and an optional password, so you paste the Kannada once and it reads as typed.

One limit: that column counts page types, not languages. We do not record which script a page is written in, so nothing here says Kannada letters behave differently from English ones.
When a Kannada letter is the wrong call
If her Kannada is weaker than yours — schooled in English, raised outside Karnataka — a Kannada letter turns reading into homework. Send English, or romanised Kannada with an English line beneath each sentence.
Do not run it through a translation tool. Machine Kannada is easy to spot because formal written forms surface where spoken ones belong.
A shared page is sometimes the wrong container. 42.9% of creators password-protect it before sharing — 1,432 of 3,335 — one more thing she must be told before reading a word. On a locked-down work phone, paper wins.
