- • Kannada has no everyday noun for girlfriend or boyfriend: Kittel's dictionary attests only ಗೆಳತಿ, "a female friend", and ಗೆಳೆಯ, "a male friend".
- • Twelve lines are published and nine were cut, each cut named with the dictionary gloss that killed it — ಒಲವು turned out to mean "favour, grace", not love.
- • Plain beats ornate, and the tradition says so: only 31.49% of the 21,701 vachanas in the KannadaLit4NLP corpus carry a published scholarly interpretation.
- • /love-gf is the right template for an Indian love proposal, not /proposal — it is the most-viewed page type at 16,998 views, 29.9% across all 21 page types.

Love Proposal Lines in Kannada, Checked Word by Word
In Indian usage a love proposal is the ask to become someone's girlfriend or boyfriend, not a marriage proposal, and Kannada has no everyday noun for that role — the closest a dictionary attests are ಗೆಳತಿ (geḷati), "a female friend", and ಗೆಳೆಯ (geḷeya), "a male friend". Below are twelve love proposal lines in Kannada, each in ಕನ್ನಡ script with Roman transliteration, English gloss and the register marked: ನೀನು (nīnu) for someone you speak to every day, ನೀವು (nīvu) for someone you do not.
Twenty-one were drafted and nine cut, because every content word had to return the right sense in a dictionary first. If you would rather send the line as a page, SubhSandesh has recorded 5,148 personalised pages created since 12 March 2026 across 21 page types, and 38.5% of those creators password-protect the page before sharing the link.
Both figures are platform-wide across all 21 page types, not proposal figures — no proposal-specific data exists for this site.
What a love proposal in Kannada actually is
A love proposal in Kannada is a short line asking one named person to be with you, with the second-person pronoun matching how close you already are. It is not a marriage proposal, and the two need different words.
Kittel's Kannada–English Dictionary enters ಗೆಳತಿ at page 599 as "a female friend" and ಗೆಳೆಯ at page 600 as "a male friend". There is nothing narrower.
So the sentence cannot lean on a label the way an English one can. You have to say what you want, which is why the plainest lines below are the strongest.
Register does the rest. Kannada's two second-person pronouns commit the verb for the whole sentence — ನೀನು takes the singular ending, ನೀವು the plural, and one person addressed as ನೀವು is shown respect, not counted twice.
Twelve love proposal lines in Kannada, grouped by who you are asking
1. Four lines for someone you already talk to every day
Register. ನೀನು, with the first-person present ending -ಉತ್ತೇನೆ where there is a verb to conjugate.
The lines. ನೀನು ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕು. — nīnu nanage bēku — "I want you." ನಿನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಇದೆ. — ninna mēle nanage prīti ide — "I have love for you." ನಿನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ಇರಬೇಕು. — ninna saṅgaḍa irabēku — "I want to be with you." ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. — nānu ninnannu bayasuttēne — "I desire you."
Who it suits. Someone who already says ನೀನು back to you.
When not to use it. Not to anyone older, nor to someone met through family. The fourth is the strongest; ಬಯಸು is glossed "to desire, to wish; to long for".
2. The two asks, in ನೀನು
Register. ನೀನು with the second-person singular ending -ಉತ್ತೀ, which Kittel enters as its own affix with ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀ and ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತೀ as examples.
The lines. ನೀನು ನನ್ನ ಗೆಳತಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೀ? — nīnu nanna geḷati āguttī? — "Will you become my girlfriend?" ನೀನು ನನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯ ಆಗುತ್ತೀ? — nīnu nanna geḷeya āguttī? — "Will you become my boyfriend?"
Who it suits. This is the actual love proposal. The first asks a woman, the second a man.
When not to use it. Both literally say "will you become my friend", and an existing friend can hear it that way. Say it where tone carries.
3. Four lines in ನೀವು, for the ask you are not certain of
Register. ನೀವು with the plural ending -ಉತ್ತೀರಿ, which Kittel defines as "the plural of -ಈ 7", and the genitive ನಿಮ್ಮ for ನಿನ್ನ.
The lines. ನೀವು ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕು. — nīvu nanage bēku — "I want you." ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಇದೆ. — nimma mēle nanage prīti ide — "I have love for you." ನೀವು ನನ್ನ ಗೆಳತಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೀರಿ? — nīvu nanna geḷati āguttīri? — "Will you become my girlfriend?" ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಂಗಡ ಬದುಕಬೇಕು. — nimma saṅgaḍa badukabēku — "I want to live with you."
Who it suits. A colleague, a neighbour, someone older, an introduction through family.
When not to use it. Between two people who already use ನೀನು, ನೀವು reads as a step backwards. The fourth line is a life proposal, not a first ask.
4. Two lines that are not an ask at all
Register. ನೀನು — both assume the relationship exists.
The lines. ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ನಂಬುತ್ತೇನೆ. — nānu ninnannu nambuttēne — "I trust you." ನೀನು ನನ್ನ ಕನಸು. — nīnu nanna kanasu — "You are my dream."
Who it suits. The days around the ask, not the ask itself. ನಂಬು is glossed "to confide, to trust, to rely on" — often better to say than love.
When not to use it. Neither is a question, so neither gets you an answer.
What the vachana poets did with plain Kannada
The argument for writing your line plainly is 900 years old. The vachanas are short, first-person Kannada poems from the sharana movement, written in ordinary speech rather than in Sanskrit or the ornate court forms of the day.
KannadaLit4NLP, a corpus published in Data in Brief in June 2026, assembled 24,746 Kannada literary verses, of which 21,701 are vachanas, dated by its authors to the 11th–19th centuries, from the Government of Karnataka's fifteen-volume Samagra Vachana Samputa and the Sanchaya digital repository.
Sahapedia's account of the vachanas records that they took no metre form such as champu or tripadi, that roughly 200 vachanakaras have surviving work, and that about 35 were women. It also gives the distinction this page turns on: vachanas are sorted into sarala, "communicated in simple language", and bedagu, which "employs a complex language of 'paradoxes and inversions'". Plainness was a named register, not an absence of skill.
The corpus also measures what the ornate half costs. Only 31.49% of those 21,701 vachanas — 6,833 — carry a published scholarly interpretation in the dataset. Nearly seven in ten of Kannada's most admired plain-speech poems still need somebody to explain them. If a poet writing deliberately simply ends up needing a commentary, an ornate line improvised tonight has no chance.
Borrow the vachana's shape, not its vocabulary: short, first person, one idea, words the person uses at home. That is what the twelve lines above do.
How each line was checked, and which nine were cut
Twenty-one lines were drafted, twelve published, nine cut. Every content word had to return a headword in Kittel's Kannada–English Dictionary whose first sense matches its use here, and every ending had to map to an affix that dictionary lists as its own entry.
The cuts, with the gloss that killed each. ಒಲವು, wanted for "love", is entered as "pleasure, complacency; kindness, favour, grace" — no sense of love at all. ಆಸೆ, wanted for "longing", is glossed at its own headword as a quarter of the compass; "wish, desire" only arrives at ಆಶೆ, where the next word listed is "lust".
ಸ್ನೇಹ, wanted for "affection", opens on "oiliness, unctuousness, fattiness, greasiness"; love is its fifth sense. That is the same failure that cost a sibling page the word ಬಾಳು, whose first gloss is "a knife, a sword".
Five more returned nothing usable: ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ "together", ಬೇಸರ, ಬಾಳ್ವೆ "a life together" and ಜೊತೆಗಾರ "companion" have no headword, and ಖುಷಿ is a Persian loan the dictionary does not enter. ಪ್ರತಿ, wanted for "every day", leads with "towards, to; against, in opposition to".
The colloquial question particle -ಯಾ, as in ಆಗುತ್ತೀಯಾ, could not be attested either, so both questions above rely on intonation. That is conservatism, not a claim that -ಯಾ is wrong.
The method has a hard limit. A dictionary first published in 1894 proves a word exists and means what this page says; it does not prove a line sounds natural in Bengaluru this week. No native Kannada speaker reviewed these lines.
Which line belongs on which kind of page
Who is being asked decides the pronoun, and then the page. Every figure below is platform-wide across all 21 SubhSandesh page types.
| Line group | Pronoun and ending | Who it is for | Page type, and its share of the 5,148 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Already close | ನೀನು, -ಉತ್ತೇನೆ | Someone you speak to daily | /love-gf — 1,178 created, 22.9% |
| The ask | ನೀನು, -ಉತ್ತೀ | The girlfriend or boyfriend question | /love-gf — 16,998 views, 29.9% of all views |
| The ask, respectful | ನೀವು, -ಉತ್ತೀರಿ | An introduction, or someone older | /love-gf — 1,178 created, 22.9% |
| Not an ask | ನೀನು, no question | The days either side of it | /proposal — outside the top five page types |
Read it by the row: pick the relationship first, the line follows.
Three of the four rows point at the same template. The romantic "I love you" page for a partner is the right home for a love proposal in the Indian sense, because that sense is the girlfriend-or-boyfriend ask. It is the joint second-most created page type at 1,178 pages, 22.9% of everything created, and the most-viewed at 16,998 views, 29.9% — again across all 21 page types, not proposal pages.
If you genuinely mean marriage, the Will You Marry Me? proposal scrapbook is the one you want: your story as a scrapbook, ending on a YES button that grows every time they dodge it. Leave time either way — the median gap between first save and last edit is 2.2 hours, sampled on /apology-dashboard, n=1,375.
When a SubhSandesh page is the wrong place for a Kannada line
The templates are English-language, and that is the honest limit. Your line sits inside the page exactly as you type it, in ಕನ್ನಡ, but every label, button and prompt around it is English. For someone who reads only Kannada, that is one sentence they can read inside a frame they cannot — a handwritten note beats it.
Two more cases where the page loses. If you are in the same room, say the line out loud. And 48.3% of views across the platform are on a phone, 27,499 of 56,886, so a recipient opening it on a work laptop is not who these pages are built for.
One number before you start: 90.9% of started pages are published and shared, 4,679 of 5,148, across all 21 page types. If you are unsure, the full SubhSandesh template list is worth a look first.
