Marriage Proposal Meaning in Hindi: Which Word to Use
Hindi has no single native word for a romantic marriage proposal, and that is the honest answer to this question. The English phrase gets borrowed because every Hindi option points somewhere else: प्रस्ताव (prastāv) is a motion tabled for discussion, रिश्ता (riśtā) and सगाई (sagāī) describe two families forming an alliance, and शादी (śādī) names the wedding itself. Every gloss below was checked against McGregor's Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary, and प्रस्ताव re-counted across 16,652 sentences of Hindi treebank text.
For the page you might send afterwards: 5,148 personalised pages have been created on SubhSandesh since 2026-03-12 across 21 page types, and 38.5% of creators password-protect theirs before sharing (1,983 of 5,148) — both platform-wide figures across all 21 page types, not proposal-specific ones. Below: what each word covers, who is in the room, and when it is wrong.
What a marriage proposal is called in Hindi
A marriage proposal in Hindi is named by its social stage, not by the moment of asking. The two words doing the work are सगाई (sagāī), which McGregor glosses "engagement; marriage arrangement", and रिश्ता (riśtā), "connection, relationship (of blood or marriage)".
The literal calque शादी का प्रस्ताव (śādī kā prastāv, "a proposal of marriage") is assembled from two dictionary headwords and is perfectly understood, but it is not a McGregor headword itself and it drags प्रस्ताव's committee flavour with it.
That is the difficulty: English lets one phrase cover both a private question and a family arrangement, and Hindi makes you pick.
Why प्रस्ताव is a committee word, not a romantic one
McGregor's entry for प्रस्ताव (prastāv, p. 667) reads: "1. introduction; commencement (of discussion, exposition). 2. proposal (for discussion); motion; suggestion. 3. occasion, time." The idiom under it is प्रस्ताव उठाना, "to raise a matter; to introduce a motion, or topic"; the agent noun is प्रस्ताव-कर्ता (prastāv-kartā), "proposer (of a motion, &c.)". No romantic sense appears in the entry.
Usage agrees with the dictionary. We searched the Hindi-Urdu Dependency Treebank in Universal Dependencies — 16,652 sentences across its train, dev and test files — and found 268 containing प्रस्ताव or its participle प्रस्तावित. Exactly one also carried a love-word token: प्रेमियों, "cricket lovers", in a sentence about cancelled trains.
The word is not romantically neutral; it is romantically absent. Say शादी का प्रस्ताव and you have tabled a motion — close to what an Indian marriage proposal often literally is.
Six Hindi words, and what each one actually covers
Each entry gives four things in the same order: the dictionary gloss, what it covers, who is in the room, and when it is wrong.
1. प्रस्ताव (prastāv)
Dictionary gloss (McGregor, p. 667): "proposal (for discussion); motion; suggestion."
What it covers: a formal offer put to a body that will deliberate on it — a board, a committee, a set of elders.
Who is in the room: people with standing to accept or reject on someone's behalf.
When it is wrong: on one knee. Used bare of someone you love, it sounds like minutes being taken.
2. शादी का प्रस्ताव (śādī kā prastāv)
Dictionary status: a construction, not a headword — शादी and प्रस्ताव are McGregor entries, the compound is not.
What it covers: the marriage offer itself, an item on the table that can be accepted or declined.
Who is in the room: the two families, or one speaking to the other.
When it is wrong: as a description of the private moment. It names the offer, not the asking.
3. रिश्ता (riśtā)
Dictionary gloss (McGregor, p. 865): "string, line: 1. connection, relationship (with). 2. relationship (of blood or marriage)." The idiom is रिश्ता करना, "to form a connection, or alliance (with)".
What it covers: the match as a link between households. The same root gives रिश्तेदार (riśtedār), "a relative", and रिश्तेदारी में जाना, "to marry into the family (of)".
Who is in the room: the families. Nobody uses रिश्ता for one person's feelings.
When it is wrong: when you are asking a person, not proposing an alliance.
4. सगाई (sagāī)
Dictionary gloss (McGregor, p. 973): "1. relationship of blood. 2. engagement; marriage arrangement. 3. remarriage." The idiom is सगाई करना, "to betroth; to arrange a marriage".
What it covers: the engagement as event and state — the point where the intention goes public.
Who is in the room: both families and a room of guests.
When it is wrong: before anyone has agreed. सगाई is the announcement, not the question.
5. शादी (śādī) and शादी-ब्याह (śādī-byāh)
Dictionary gloss (McGregor, p. 947): "delight, glad occasion: marriage; a wedding", with शादी करना, "to have (a person) married (to); to arrange a marriage", and शादी-ब्याह given as an equivalent. शादीशुदा (śādīśudā) is "married".
What it covers: the wedding and the married state — note that शादी करना is glossed transitively, in the arranging sense.
Who is in the room: everyone, eventually.
When it is wrong: as a stand-in for the proposal. It names the destination.
6. विवाह (vivāh)
Dictionary gloss (McGregor, p. 929): "marriage", with विवाह करना, "to arrange the marriage (of; to); to marry", and विवाह-संबंध, "marriage tie(s) or relationship".
What it covers: marriage in its formal, Sanskritic and legal register — the word the Hindu Marriage Act is named with.
Who is in the room: officials, priests, anyone drafting a card.
When it is wrong: in conversation with the person you love. It is the register of documents.
Which word goes with which page
The word you picked decides what to send. The right-hand column is SubhSandesh's own creation data, measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide across 21 page types — no proposal-specific figure exists, because that data is not available to us.
| Hindi word | What it commits you to | Who it is addressed to | Platform-wide figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| प्रस्ताव / शादी का प्रस्ताव | An offer of marriage, tabled | The other family | No per-template figure; 5,148 pages across 21 page types |
| रिश्ता | An alliance between households | Relatives and go-betweens | Not a page type on the platform at all |
| सगाई | A public engagement | Both families and guests | Not a page type on the platform at all |
| शादी / विवाह | The wedding | Everyone invited | Invitation templates exist; not in the top five page types |
| No Hindi word at all | Telling one person how you feel | One person | /love-gf: 1,178 created, 22.9% of all pages; 16,998 views, 29.9% of all views |
Four of those five rows are family business, and only the last is what most people searching this phrase want. If yours is genuinely the marriage question, the proposal scrapbook template is the one page literally built for it — your story, ending in a YES button that grows every time they dodge it. If you mean the Indian sense of "propose" — asking someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend — the 'I love you' page is right, and the platform's most-viewed template at 16,998 views, 29.9% of all page views.
Our companion post at /blog/propose-day-meaning-in-hindi covers the verb itself.
Asking her, or asking about her: two different conversations
An Indian marriage proposal is frequently a family process rather than a private question, and the vocabulary splits along that seam. Asking her is a conversation with one person; asking about her is रिश्ता, conducted between households, often through an intermediary.
Research on urban India finds the two folded into each other. Tanya Lamba's 2022 study in Changing Societies & Personalities — in-depth interviews with 12 working women aged 25–30 in Delhi over two months in 2019 — reports that "in most cases, the intimate relationship that starts from mutual attraction must seek parental approval for marriage". One participant said she would say yes to her partner only once her parents had agreed.
Twelve interviews is a small qualitative sample and is not a national rate. It does explain why this query needs two answers: words for the person, and words for the families.
What Indian marriage law says about an engagement
Almost nothing, which is worth knowing before you treat सगाई as binding. We searched both principal statutes in full, as published by India Code and stamped "As on the 15th April, 2026", for betrothal, engagement and espousal: zero matches in either Act.
The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 sets conditions in s.5 — a bridegroom of 21, a bride of 18 — and s.7(2) says that where the rites include the Saptapadi, "the marriage becomes complete and binding when the seventh step is taken". Nothing earlier is a marriage.
The civil route is clearer still about whose business a marriage is. Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, s.5 requires written notice to the Marriage Officer of a district where one party has lived for at least thirty days, s.6(2) has it published by affixing a copy in a conspicuous place in his office, and s.7(1) lets any person object within thirty days. Even the route built for couples marrying outside custom makes the intention public for a month.
When a proposal page is the wrong thing to send
If your situation is रिश्ता — two families weighing a match — none of these pages belongs near it. A shareable link is built for one recipient, and 38.5% of creators password-protect theirs before sending it (1,983 of 5,148, platform-wide across 21 page types), which tells you what privacy people expect from one. That is the opposite of a conversation between elders.
A page is also wrong if the person is sitting next to you, and wrong if you are rushing: the median gap between a page's first save and its last edit is 2.2 hours, sampled on the apology dashboard template with n = 1,375. People go away and rewrite.
One caution: every Hindi line above comes from a McGregor entry read for this post, none of it was reviewed by a native speaker, and words we could not find in the dictionary — मँगनी, रोका, वाग्दान among them — were cut rather than guessed.
