Propose Day Quotes in Gujarati, Checked Against a Dictionary
Propose Day 2027 falls on Monday 8 February, the second day of Valentine week — Rose Day is Sunday 7 February, Valentine's Day Sunday 14 February. Below are ten Propose Day quotes in Gujarati, each in ગુજરાતી script with a Roman transliteration and an English gloss, every content word checked against a published Gujarati–English dictionary and two corpora. Five more were drafted and cut, and those reasons are the most useful part here.
Two figures for context, measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide across 21 page types and never proposal-specific: 5,148 personalised pages created on SubhSandesh since 2026-03-12, and 38.5% of creators password-protect the page before sharing (1,983 of 5,148).
What a Propose Day line in Gujarati actually has to get right
Three things, and the search phrase hides them all. Script: Gujarati has its own Unicode block, U+0A80–U+0AFF, so a line pasted from a Devanagari page is not Gujarati. Register: તું (tũ) and તમે (tame) are different words, and verb agreement follows the pronoun.
The third is the word itself, the one people skip. Turner's A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages, searchable at Chicago's Digital Dictionaries of South Asia, gives Gujarati for "heart" at entry 14152 as haiyũ (હૈયું), not હૃદય, and vacaná at 11199 as vεṇ (વેણ) 'word, promise', not વચન. Each removed a line below.
તું or તમે — the choice that decides whether a Gujarati line lands
તું is intimate and singular; તમે is respectful and also plural. A Gujarati reader registers the wrong one before reading the rest of the sentence, and on Propose Day it reads as cold or presumptuous.
The 168-sentence Tatoeba Gujarati collection holds the contrast as a minimal pair: તારુ નામ શું છે? against તમારુ નામ શું છે?, both "what is your name?".
The verb moves with the pronoun. The same corpus has તુ ક્યાં રહે છે? beside તમે તુર્કીમાં ક્યાં રહો છો?: રહે છે for તું, રહો છો for તમે. The imperative splits too — જા (jā) intimate, જાઓ (jāo) respectful.
The 187-sentence Universal Dependencies Gujarati treebank agrees, tagging શું તારે જવું છે? with the તું lemma and તમે શું કરી શકો છો! with the તમે copula છો. So: if you have never said તું to this person aloud, do not start in a proposal.
Ten Propose Day quotes in Gujarati, with Roman and English
Every group carries four fields in order: the lines, the register, who it fits, what it is not for.
1. For someone you already talk to every day
હું તને પ્રેમ કરું છું. તું મારી સાથે આવીશ? huṁ tane prem karuṁ chhuṁ. tuṁ mārī sāthe āvīś? — "I love you. Will you come with me?"
તારી વાતો મને મીઠી લાગે છે. મારે તારી સાથે જ રહેવું છે. tārī vāto mane mīṭhī lāge chhe. māre tārī sāthe ja rahevuṁ chhe. — "Your words sound sweet to me. I want to stay with you."
Register: તું throughout. Fits: someone you message daily and call તું. Not for: a first ask to someone you have only called તમે.
2. For someone you respect, or do not know well yet
તમારું નામ મારા દિલમાં છે. હું તમને એક વાત કહું? tamāruṁ nām mārā dilmā̃ chhe. huṁ tamne ek vāt kahuṁ? — "Your name is in my heart. May I tell you one thing?"
મારે તમારી સાથે જ રહેવું છે. તમે હા કહેશો? māre tamārī sāthe ja rahevuṁ chhe. tame hā kaheśo? — "I want to be with you. Will you say yes?"
Register: તમે, with છો and -શો agreement. Fits: a colleague, a neighbour, anyone older, anyone you have called તમે until now. Not for: a long-term partner, where it reads as a joke.
3. For asking without cornering anyone
આજે મારે તને એક વાત પૂછવી છે — તું મારી થઈશ? āje māre tane ek vāt pūchhvī chhe — tuṁ mārī thaīś? — "Today I want to ask you one thing — will you be mine?"
મને ખબર નથી તું શું કહીશ. પણ મારે પૂછવું જ છે. mane khabar nathī tuṁ śuṁ kahīś. paṇ māre pūchhvuṁ ja chhe. — "I do not know what you will say. But I do want to ask."
Register: તું. Fits: anyone you want to leave an exit — the second line names the uncertainty instead of hiding it. Not for: public settings, where an audience removes it. Swap મારી for મારો for a man.
4. For a card, a status, or a single-line message
પ્યાર નાનો શબ્દ છે. વાત મોટી છે. pyār nāno śabd chhe. vāt moṭī chhe. — "'Love' is a small word. What it means is big."
તું મને ગમે છે. એટલું જ કહેવું છે. tuṁ mane game chhe. eṭluṁ ja kahevuṁ chhe. — "I like you. That is all I want to say."
Register: neutral, then તું. Fits: short formats that crop long lines. Not for: the whole proposal — a status line is an opening, not the ask.
5. For the day after, whatever the answer was
જવાબ 'ના' હોય તો પણ — તું મારા માટે ખાસ છે. javāb 'nā' hoy to paṇ — tuṁ mārā māṭe khās chhe. — "Even if the answer is no — you are special to me."
તમે ખુશ છો, મારે એટલું જ જોઈએ છે. tame khush chho, māre eṭluṁ ja joīe chhe. — "That you are happy is all I want."
Register: તું first, તમે second. Fits: someone told no who wants to close it well. Not for: a second ask. A refusal is information — send one of these once, then leave it alone.
What I cut, and why
Fifteen drafted, ten published, five cut — each on an instrument, not a hunch. "The dictionary" here is the 1884 Gujarati English Dictionary of Doshimaneklal Govindlal (N. M. Tripathi, Bombay).
"તું મારી જિંદગી છે." જિંદગી has no headword in the dictionary, no token in the treebank and none in the corpus. જીવન is attested as 'life', but "તું મારું જીવન છે" reads as a translation. Cut.
"તારી આંખોમાં મારી દુનિયા છે." દુનિયા is a clean headword glossed 'world'; આંખ is a headword whose gloss line in the scan is OCR-damaged, so its oblique plural stayed unverified. Cut.
"હું તને વચન આપું છું." Turner gives vacaná as vεṇ 'word, promise'; the dictionary glosses વચન as 'speech'. વચન આપવું does occur in the treebank — inside a news sentence about two parties sharing power. Cut.
"મારું હૃદય તારું છે." હૃદય is not a headword there, and Turner's entry 14152 gives the inherited form as haiyũ. દિલ, glossed 'heart', went in instead. Cut.
"તારા માટે મારા મનમાં સ્નેહ છે." Turner attests snéha as neh (નેહ), not સ્નેહ, and મન's gloss is damaged. પ્રેમ and પ્યાર are clean headwords glossed 'love'. Cut.
No native Gujarati speaker reviewed any of this, which is the honest limit on all ten.
One word survived a scare. Turner glosses ગમવું 'to approve', which sounds wrong for "I like you" — until the treebank's તેમને તે ગમવું જરૂરી છે puts the liker in the dative. તું મને ગમે છે is literally "you are pleasing to me". Syntax confirmed it, not the gloss.
Why the Gujarati script has no headline bar
The Unicode Standard's chapter on the official scripts of India calls Gujarati "a North Indian script closely related to Devanagari" that "is most obviously distinguished from Devanagari by not having a horizontal bar for its letterforms, a characteristic of the older Kaithi script to which Gujarati is related". That missing bar — Devanagari's shirorekha — is the visual test for whether what you pasted is Gujarati or Hindi. The chapter also notes danda and double danda are not separately encoded for Gujarati, so a line lifted from a Hindi page can look almost right and be the wrong script.
It matters because of who is reading. Kiranpreet Nara's 2017 Interspeech study of breathy and modal vowels in heritage and native Gujarati speakers found heritage speakers kept the breathy–modal contrast, but "the contrast is not as robust as that of native speakers" — and Gujarati uses it to separate whole words, its examples including 'burden', 'twelve' and 'outside'.
Reading follows the same curve. Mary Roberts's 1999 Victoria University of Wellington thesis on language maintenance and shift in the Gujarati, Dutch and Samoan communities drew on 141 Gujarati respondents reporting on 327 people in a community of about 6,000. That is the reader assumed here, and why every line carries a transliteration.
Where to send the line, and what each route asks of the reader
Four routes. The first-party column was measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide across 21 page types, never on proposals.
| Route | Who writes the Gujarati | What the recipient needs | First-party figure, platform-wide |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp message | you, on a Gujarati keyboard | a font rendering U+0A80–U+0AFF | none measured |
| Handwritten card | you, by hand | to be in the same room | none measured |
| Animated "I love you" page | you paste it in | a link; 48.3% of views are on a phone | 1,178 created, 22.9%; 16,998 views, 29.9% — most-viewed template |
| Proposal scrapbook | you paste it in | a link they open privately | 38.5% password-protect before sharing (1,983 of 5,148) |
The two page routes buy privacy and a phone-shaped layout; nothing else is measured.
When a Gujarati line on a SubhSandesh page is the wrong choice
Both SubhSandesh pages in that table are English-language templates. Gujarati pasted into the fields you write will display; the buttons, headings and prompts stay English. Half ગુજરાતી and half English labels is not a Gujarati page, and for a reader uncomfortable in English it is worse than a plain message.
Then the ask. In Indian usage "propose" usually means asking someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend, not to marry them. If that is your ask, the proposal scrapbook answers the wrong question and the "I love you" page fits better — which is why both are named here rather than one.
And if they are in the same room on 8 February, say it out loud. No page competes with that.
