- • 11 Tamil lines are published here and 7 were cut; every content word was checked against the Madras Tamil Lexicon (42 headword queries, 39 hits).
- • The UD Tamil-TTB treebank holds 9,581 words of literary Tamil and not one instance of the intimate நீ, உன், உன்னை or உனக்கு — so a conversational corpus of 597 sentences was added to verify the intimate register.
- • Classifiers separate literary from spoken Tamil at 99.4%-99.8% accuracy (IruMozhi, NAACL 2024), which is why a correct written line can still sound stilted when said aloud.
- • Propose Day 2027 is Monday 8 February, day two of an eight-day Valentine week running from Rose Day on Sunday 7 February to Valentine's Day on Sunday 14 February.
- • SubhSandesh has no Tamil-specific data: all 5,148 pages across 21 page types are stored without a language field, so every figure here is platform-wide.

Propose Day Quotes in Tamil: 11 Lines, Checked Word by Word
Propose day quotes in Tamil are only safe once two things are settled: whether you address the person as நீ or நீங்கள், and whether the line is written Tamil or spoken Tamil. This page publishes 11 lines in Tamil script, each with a Roman transliteration and an English gloss, each checked word by word against the Madras Tamil Lexicon and two Tamil corpora. Seven more were drafted and cut, with a reason for each.

What a Propose Day quote in Tamil actually is
A Propose Day quote in Tamil is a short line, sent on 8 February, in which one person tells another they want the relationship to change. In Indian usage "propose" almost always means asking someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend, not to marry you, and Tamil follows that split: the marriage words are a separate set.
A wish is broadcast; this is addressed to one person, which is why the grammar of address matters here.
நீ or நீங்கள்: the choice that rewrites every verb after it
Tamil has two second persons. நீ (nī) is intimate and singular. நீங்கள் (nīṅkaḷ) is respectful, and the Madras Tamil Lexicon still glosses it primarily as a plural — "முன்னிலைப் பன்மைப்பெயர்" — the honorific singular being a later development.
The pronoun is not a standalone swap. The verb agrees, and so does every possessive: உன் (uṉ, your, intimate) against உங்கள் (uṅkaḷ); உன்னை against உங்களை.
A present-tense verb ends -கிறாய் for நீ, -கிறீர்கள் for நீங்கள். An imperative is bare for நீ, -உங்கள் for நீங்கள்.
Right pronoun, wrong verb, and the sentence reads as an error rather than as warmth. The rule that survives contact with real families: if you already call the person நீ, use நீ. If you have ever called them நீங்கள், do not switch inside a proposal — a sudden நீ reads as presumption at the moment you are asking permission.
Literary Tamil and spoken Tamil are two systems, not two styles
Tamil is diglossic. The high variety, written Tamil, belongs to writing and formal speech; the low variety, spoken Tamil, to conversation and informal messaging.
In IruMozhi, a parallel corpus of Literary and Spoken Tamil published at NAACL 2024, Kabilan Prasanna and Aryaman Arora built 1,497 sentence pairs and trained classifiers that separate the two at 99.4% to 99.8% accuracy. Varieties a model tells apart that cleanly are not stylistic shades.
The same paper audits what Tamil text online is. Their classifier estimates a Wikipedia-derived corpus at 81.5% Literary Tamil, while three datasets scraped from social media come out at 6.2%, 13.1% and 14.1%. Written Tamil dominates the formal web; spoken Tamil dominates the messages people send.
The split is old and deliberate. Timothy Lubin's study of legal diglossia in premodern Indic law traces a "functional diglossia" through inscriptions of the 4th to 16th centuries, medieval Tamil included; and Tolkāppiyam, the oldest Tamil grammar, fixes the high variety in three parts — letter, word, meaning.
So a line copied out of formal written Tamil can be correct and still sound like a textbook read aloud. Seetha Lakshmi's study of 18 primary-school Tamil lessons in Singapore found exactly that: before 2005 pupils met only written Tamil in class, which "created an awkward situation wherein students speak in formal WT in informal settings". The committee she quotes calls this extreme diglossia unique to Tamil among Singapore's four official languages.
11 Propose Day quotes in Tamil, grouped by what you are asking for
1. Saying it plainly, to someone you call நீ
நான் உன்னை காதலிக்கிறேன். — Nāṉ uṉṉai kātalikkiṟēṉ. — "I love you." நான் உன்னை விரும்புகிறேன். — Nāṉ uṉṉai virumpukiṟēṉ. — "I want you / I care for you." நான் உன்னை நம்புகிறேன். — Nāṉ uṉṉai nampukiṟēṉ. — "I trust you."
Register: intimate. Every form is attested in the Tatoeba Tamil corpus; the first sentence appears there verbatim. காதல் is the stronger word; the Lexicon gives விரும்பு- as "to wish, desire, long for; to love, like".
Best when the feeling is half-known already. Do not send all three.
2. Asking rather than announcing
நீ என்னுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறேன். — Nī eṉṉuṭaṉ irukka vēṇṭum eṉṟu virumpukiṟēṉ. — "I want you to be with me." உன்னிடம் ஒன்று சொல்ல வேண்டும். — Uṉṉiṭam oṉṟu colla vēṇṭum. — "There is something I have to tell you."
Register: intimate. The frame [clause] வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறேன் is corpus-attested. The second line is an opener, not a proposal — it buys the reply before you spend the sentence.
Best on a day you will see them; never followed by six hours of silence.
3. Saying why, not just what
நீ எனக்கு மிகவும் முக்கியம். — Nī eṉakku mikavum mukkiyam. — "You matter to me, very much." உன்னைப் பார்க்கும்போது எல்லாம் சரியாக இருக்கிறது. — Uṉṉaip pārkkumpōtu ellām cariyāka irukkiṟatu. — "When I see you, everything feels right."
Register: intimate. முக்கியம் carries no romantic charge by itself — the Lexicon gives "that which is primary, principal or important" — which makes it usable with someone who has never heard this from you.
Best where காதல் would be too fast; never after a no.
4. The respectful register, for someone you do not call நீ
நான் உங்களை விரும்புகிறேன். — Nāṉ uṅkaḷai virumpukiṟēṉ. — "I care for you." நீங்கள் எனக்கு மிகவும் முக்கியம். — Nīṅkaḷ eṉakku mikavum mukkiyam. — "You matter to me, very much." நீங்கள் என்னுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறேன். — Nīṅkaḷ eṉṉuṭaṉ irukka vēṇṭum eṉṟu virumpukiṟēṉ. — "I would like you to be with me." நீங்கள் என்ன நினைக்கிறீர்கள் என்று சொல்லுங்கள். — Nīṅkaḷ eṉṉa niṉaikkiṟīrkaḷ eṉṟu colluṅkaḷ. — "Tell me what you think."
Register: respectful — for a colleague, a neighbour, someone older, or anyone you have only addressed as நீங்கள்.
The last line is the one worth keeping: it hands the decision back, and both -கிறீர்கள் and -உங்கள் are attested. Send it alone.
How every line was checked, and the seven that were cut
Every content word was looked up in the Madras Tamil Lexicon — 42 queries, 39 with an entry. Every inflection was matched against a corpus containing it.
| Instrument | Size | What it could verify | Lines cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madras Tamil Lexicon (DSAL) | 42 queries, 39 hits | Content words and attested senses | 4 |
| UD Tamil-TTB treebank | 600 sentences, 9,581 tokens | Respectful forms only — 12 Person=2 tokens | 0 |
| Tatoeba Tamil export | 597 sentences, 2,308 tokens | Intimate forms — நீ ×27, உன்- ×20 | 2 |
| SubhSandesh page records | 5,148 pages, 21 page types | Nothing — no language field | 0 |
The treebank row is the finding. UD Tamil-TTB is literary Tamil, and across 9,581 words it holds not one instance of நீ, உன், உன்னை or உனக்கு; its single imperative is the respectful இருங்கள். Written Tamil cannot verify the intimate forms a proposal needs — hence the conversational corpus.
The seven cuts and their reasons. என் வாழ்க்கைத்துணையாக இருப்பாயா? — வாழ்க்கைத்துணை is glossed flatly as "Wife", a marriage word.
நீ என் ஆசை — ஆசை sense 4 is "Sexual appetite". நம் பயணம் இன்று தொடங்குகிறது — பயணம் sense 2 is "Death, as a journey".
என் மனம் உன்னிடம் இருக்கிறது — மனம் is glossed mind, purpose, memory, desire and rock salt, never heart, so the English gloss would have been false. நீ என் நண்பியாக இருந்தாய் — நண்பி has no headword, and masculine நண்பன் is glossed both "friend" and "Lover, husband".
உன் நிழலில் நான் இருக்கிறேன் — நிழல் appears zero times in either corpus. எனக்கு உன்னைப் பிடிக்கும் — all ten instances of that frame take an inanimate thing, never a person.
Two extrapolations are disclosed, not hidden: என்னுடன் joins a pronoun to உடன் (a headword, "together with", 32 treebank tokens), attested only as எங்களுடன்; and உன்னை காதலிக்கிறேன் drops the prescriptive sandhi doubling, as the corpus does.
Where the line goes, and what the platform numbers can and cannot say
Send the line by itself first. A Tamil sentence renders on every current Android and iOS build; a decorated image is the commonest way a correct line breaks.
If you want more than a message, a shareable page is sturdier — 90.9% of started SubhSandesh pages are published and shared, 4,679 of 5,148, platform-wide across 21 page types. The proposal scrapbook template is built for the ask itself, ending in a YES button that grows every time they dodge it. For the commoner Indian version — asking someone to be your girlfriend, not to marry you — the "I love you" page fits better, and it is the most-viewed template at 16,998 views, 29.9% of all page views.
Both are English-language: interface, prompts and built-in copy. A Tamil reader gets somewhere to paste their own Tamil, which renders correctly inside both; what they do not get is a Tamil interface.
Browse the other templates if neither suits. Those figures are platform-wide across 21 page types — no proposal-specific or language-specific figure exists.
When a Tamil line, or SubhSandesh, is the wrong choice
If the person speaks Tamil but does not read the script fluently — common in the diaspora and among people schooled in English — send the transliteration. A line they cannot read is worse than one in English.
If you are in the same room on 8 February, say it aloud. A link is a worse medium than a voice, and 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect a page before sharing — 1,983 of 5,148, platform-wide — which shows the friction a link adds at the wrong moment.
The limit that matters most: the Tamil here was verified against a lexicon and two corpora, not by a native speaker. Instruments catch a missing headword or an unattested ending, not a line that is grammatical and simply sounds odd. Read it to a Tamil speaker first.
