- • Propose Day 2027 is Monday 8 February; Rose Day is Sunday 7 February and Valentine's Day Sunday 14 February.
- • Ten Odia lines are published here out of seventeen drafted — every word traced to a headword in Praharaj's Purnnachandra Odia Bhashakosha, and seven cut with the dictionary evidence given.
- • Odia has three second-person singular pronouns; Sahoo (2013) places tume as the form for strangers of the same age-group, which is why all ten lines use it rather than tu.
- • The Universal Dependencies Odia treebank is 456 sentences and 5,818 tokens in total, and its one instance of ପ୍ରସ୍ତାବ is a bank-board proposal — Odia has no native verb for the romantic ask.
- • Platform-wide across 21 page types, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,499 of 56,886 views), so the Odia has to render on a handset.

Propose Day Wishes in Odia, Checked Against a Dictionary
Propose Day 2027 falls on Monday 8 February, and below are ten Propose Day wishes in Odia — each in ଓଡ଼ିଆ script, with a Roman transliteration and an English meaning. Every word was looked up in Praharaj's Purnnachandra Odia Bhashakosha, and every verb ending matched to a form occurring in the Universal Dependencies Odia treebank or in Tatoeba's Odia sentences.
Two SubhSandesh figures set expectations, both platform-wide across 21 page types rather than proposal-specific: 5,148 personalised pages created since 2026-03-12, and 48.3% of shared pages opened on a phone (27,499 of 56,886 views). A handset is where the Odia must render.
Seven further lines were drafted and cut. This page gives the ten that survived, the ତୁ / ତୁମେ / ଆପଣ register choice, why Odia letters are shaped as they are, and what could not be verified.
What an Odia Propose Day wish is, and which "propose" it means
An Odia Propose Day wish is a short message in the Odia script for 8 February, the second day of Valentine week. It is usually sent as a WhatsApp message or an Instagram caption, and read rather than spoken.
The word matters. In Indian usage "propose" almost always means asking someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend, not to marry you. Odia has no neat native verb for it either: Praharaj glosses ପ୍ରସ୍ତାବ (prastāba) as "Subject; matter; topic", "Chapter; section" and "Discussion" — no romantic sense at all, and its one occurrence in the Odia treebank is a proposal from a bank board. Line 3, which asks someone to be your ସାଙ୍ଗ, is what most people searching this want to say.
Ten Propose Day wishes in Odia, with transliteration and meaning
Each entry gives the line, the gloss, who it suits and how it was checked. All ten sit at the ତୁମ level; the register section explains why.
1. ମୁଁ ତୁମକୁ ଭଲ ପାଉଛି ।
Muñ tumaku bhala pāuchi — "I love you." Odia uses ଭଲ ପାଇବା, literally "to find good". For someone you have already told, or are telling plainly for the first time. Praharaj lists it at p. 6055 as "To love"; the -ଉଛି first-person ending is in the treebank in ମୁଁ … ଯାଉଛି.
2. ତୁମେ ମୋ ଜୀବନ ।
Tume mo jībana — "You are my life." Less of an overstatement than it looks: Praharaj's ଜୀବନ entry (p. 3005) gives sense 7 as "One's dearest person; beloved person". Short enough for a status.
3. ତୁମେ ମୋ ସାଙ୍ଗ ହେବ କି ?
Tume mo sāṅga heba ki? — "Will you be my companion?" The real Propose Day ask, put as a question. ସାଙ୍ଗ is at p. 8361, "Companionship; companion"; the second-person future -ବ is in the treebank as ତୁମେମାନେ … ବଡ଼ ହେବ, the particle କି as ଦେଖିଲ କି ?
4. ଆଜି ମୁଁ ତୁମକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ କଥା କହିବି ।
Āji muñ tumaku goṭie kathā kahibi — "Today I'll tell you one thing." An opener, sent before the real message. Praharaj marks ଗୋଟିଏ ଆଦରାର୍ଥକ, the respectful counting word, against ଗୋଟାଏ, the disrespectful one.
5. ମୁଁ ତୁମ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ ରହିବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଛି ।
Muñ tuma sāṅgare rahibāku cāhuñchi — "I want to stay with you." Less dramatic than line 2 and easier to answer, which is the point. ସାଙ୍ଗରେ and ରହିବ are both in the treebank; so is the want-frame, spelled ଚାହୁଁଚି there.
6. ମୋ ମନ ତୁମ ପାଖରେ ।
Mo mana tuma pākhare — "My heart is with you." Four words, no verb, nothing to misread. Good for a caption where a longer line wraps. ମନ is at p. 6253; ପାଖ at p. 4707, "Nearness; proximity".
7. ତୁମ ହସ ମୋ ଦିନର ସବୁଠାରୁ ଭଲ କଥା ।
Tuma hasa mo dinara sabuṭhāru bhala kathā — "Your laugh is the best thing in my day." Specific rather than declarative, so it works where lines 1 and 2 would be too much too soon. ହସ is at p. 9015, "Laugh; laughter"; ସବୁଠାରୁ ଭଲ is in the treebank as ସବୁଠାରୁ ଭଲ କାମ ଥିଲା.
8. ମୁଁ ତୁମର ଉତ୍ତର ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରିବି ।
Muñ tumara uttara apekṣā karibi — "I will wait for your answer." Send it after the ask, not instead. ଉତ୍ତର is at p. 945, "Reply; answer"; ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରିବା at p. 395, "To wait; to await".
9. ତୁମେ ଯାହା ଉତ୍ତର ଦେବ, ମୁଁ ମାନିବି ।
Tume yāhā uttara deba, muñ mānibi — "Whatever answer you give, I will accept it." The line worth sending. ମାନିବା is at p. 6471, "To obey; to comply with". If the answer is no, this is the last message, not the first of several.
10. ମୁଁ ତୁମକୁ ବିବାହ କରିବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଛି ।
Muñ tumaku bibāha karibāku cāhuñchi — "I want to marry you." The marriage version, for the minority of 8 February messages that mean it. ବିବାହ is at p. 5688, "Marriage; wedding"; the treebank sentence ମୁଁ ବିବାହ କରିବି ନାହିଁ has the same frame.
If the ask deserves more than a block of text, the Will You Marry Me? proposal scrapbook is built for line 10 — your story, ending in a YES button that grows every time they dodge it. For lines 1 to 9, the girlfriend-or-boyfriend ask, the "I love you" page fits better: third most-created page type at 1,178 pages, 22.9% of everything created, and most-viewed at 16,998 views, 29.9% of all page views. Both interfaces are English: they carry your Odia, they do not write or check it.
ତୁ, ତୁମେ or ଆପଣ: the choice that decides whether a line lands
Odia has three second-person singular pronouns, and the wrong one is what a native reader notices first. Kalyanamalini Sahoo's 2013 study in Acta Linguistica Asiatica sets out all three with their agreement.
ତୁ (tu) is intimate — close friends, relatives, younger people. Sahoo records that, lacking honorific content, it is also used for servants and "socially low class people". None of the ten lines uses it. Praharaj is blunter, glossing ତୁ "Thou (contemptuously used)".
ତୁମେ (tume) sits between them, and Sahoo lists its users precisely: in-laws, male family members, colleagues, strangers of the same age-group, neighbours, elders. Someone you are about to propose to is almost by definition in that band.
ଆପଣ (āpaṇa) is the honorific, the one students use for a teacher, and takes its own ending — the imperative -ନ୍ତୁ, as in the treebank's ଆପଣ ଗରମ ପାଣି ବ୍ୟବହାର କରନ୍ତୁ ନାହିଁ. Line 3 becomes ଆପଣ ମୋ ସାଙ୍ଗ ହେବେ କି ? Use it if you have only ever addressed them formally.
Why Odia letters are round, and why that matters on a phone
The curved, umbrella-hooked Odia letters are usually explained by palm leaf. Manish Minz's 2015 Typography Day paper records the mechanics: Odia was incised on dried palm leaves called Tari with a metal stylus, a Kitta lekhani, the grooves rubbed with carbon-based ink and cleaned with sand. The paper says Bengali "retained the horizontal tip line of the original script" while "it is said that Odia script changed them to curves due to the exigencies of the writing material, the palm leaf".
Note the hedge. Minz reports that explanation rather than demonstrating it, and the Unicode Standard's related remark about palm leaves and letter shapes covers South Indian scripts generally. I found nothing proving it for Odia, so I will not assert it.
What is settled: Odia and Bengali are siblings, not variants. Minz traces both to proto-Odia, used from the 11th to the 14th century across Assam, Bengal and Odisha, with Odia's script fully formed under the Suryavanshi kings of 1435–1540. Odia is also a classical language: the Central Institute of Indian Languages, under the Ministry of Education, lists it with Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu, each with a Centre of Excellence.
Practically, that means rendering. The Odia block sits at U+0B00–U+0B7F, so these lines travel as text, not pictures — but the phone needs an Odia font. Android and iOS ship one; a very old handset may show boxes.
Which Odia are you actually writing?
There is more than one. A 2026 paper by Dibya Prakash Panda and Thapasya Jayaraj of IIT Indore, in Annali di Ca' Foscari: Serie Orientale, calls Odia a continuum of regional varieties and analyses negation across eight: Kataki, Sambalpuri, Debagadia, Sundargadi, Singhbhumi, Baleswari, Desia and Ganjami. It is forthcoming and only the abstract is readable, so eight is all I take from it.
These ten lines are standard Odia. Someone who reads Sambalpuri at home will understand them, but as school Odia rather than as theirs.
Four ways to send an Odia line, compared
The container decides whether the script survives, and who can read it.
| Delivery | Odia script | Who can open it | Platform-wide figure (21 page types) |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp message | Unicode text, U+0B00–U+0B7F | Anyone in the chat | Not measurable by us |
| Instagram caption or story | Unicode text | Followers, plus reshares | Not measurable by us |
| Screenshot or image | Pixels — not copyable | Anyone, no font needed | Not measurable by us |
| A shareable SubhSandesh page | Unicode text in the page | Whoever has the link | 48.3% of 56,886 views on a phone; 38.5% password-protect before sharing (1,983 of 5,148) |
A screenshot is the only option that survives a missing font, and the only one they cannot copy, search or reply to inline.
When an Odia line is the wrong thing to send
If you are in the same room, say it out loud. A written line is for distance, and 8 February 2027 is a working Monday — but it is not an improvement on speech.
If you do not know which pronoun they use with you, an Odia line is a guess dressed as a gesture. Sahoo's finding is that communities of practice, not individuals, decide what counts as polite. Ask a mutual friend, or write in English.
If the answer is no, line 9 is where it ends. A refusal is information, not an obstacle.
