A Raksha Bandhan wish in Kannada is a greeting in the Kannada script that names the sibling by age rank, because the language offers no neutral alternative. Hindi lets you write bhai and stop. Kannada makes you decide between ಅಣ್ಣ and ತಮ್ಮ before you can finish the sentence.

That split is grammar, not etiquette. Kannada is a South Dravidian language; Hindi is Indo-Aryan. A 2023 paper in the Journal of Language Relationship reconstructs the Proto-South-Dravidian term for 'elder sister' from the near-identical Tamil akkā, Malayalam akka, Kannada akka and Badaga akka, and finds that where these languages borrowed sibling words, they took the elder terms first while the younger ones held out.

So a generic Kannada rakhi wish is not really writable. Pick the term first.

Send both, and lead with the script. Kannada is one of 12 South Asian languages in Google Research's Dakshina dataset, and its native-speaker annotators attested an average of 2.0 different Latin spellings per word across a 30,000-word Kannada sample. There is no correct one: the LREC 2020 paper records that these languages "lack common standard romanization systems" and are "often written in the Latin script, most notably for informal communication such as within SMS messages, WhatsApp, or social media".

Which is the argument for writing the transliteration yourself: on the paper's benchmark, the best of three systems converting single Latin-script words back into Kannada still got 33.8% of them wrong.

The other constraint is the font. Kannada occupies its own Unicode block, U+0C80 to U+0CFF, so a device renders it only with a font for that block — and because Kannada is an abugida with "a large number of consonant conjunct forms", one thing that looks like a single letter can be several code points.

The question is what survives the trip to the other phone.

Raksha Bandhan 2027: the date, and how early to write the line

Raksha Bandhan 2027 falls on Tuesday 17 August 2027, on Shravana Purnima. Rakhi 2026 was Friday 28 August 2026.

A Tuesday matters: if your sibling works, the rakhi has to arrive over the preceding weekend and the message should land in the morning, not at 11pm. Write the line a week out, while there is time to choose between anna and tamma.

When a Kannada Raksha Bandhan wish is the wrong choice

Three cases, one of them about us.

The home language is not Kannada. In coastal Karnataka a family's first language may be Tulu, Konkani, Kodava or Beary. A Kannada wish there reads as the state's language rather than the family's — a smaller gesture than it looks.

The recipient's phone has no Kannada font. Kannada is neither small nor fading — Glottolog records it as not endangered and a statutory provincial language of Karnataka since 1950. Its written footprint is another matter: filtering Wikipedia into clean sentences for the Dakshina dataset left 678,900 of them in Kannada, the fewest of its four Dravidian languages, against 747,500 in Malayalam and 1,144,400 in Tamil. A healthy spoken language with a thin digital tail is where a wish arrives as empty boxes: send the transliteration first.

Raksha Bandhan may not be the August festival that household keeps. In plenty of Karnataka homes Varamahalakshmi Vrata and Gowri-Ganesha carry more weight — said from experience, not from a survey, because no published measurement of it exists. A rakhi message to a family that does not tie rakhis is a greeting card, not a ritual.
