Vampire Quotes: 12 Checked Classics, 48 Originals, Real History
The best vampire quotes come from four public-domain books, Byron's The Giaour (1813), Polidori's The Vampyre (1819), Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872) and Stoker's Dracula (1897), and every line below was matched word for word against Project Gutenberg with its chapter. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone and each page averages 11.1 views, so a vampire quote should fit one screen and survive a reread. Then come 48 originals by mood, a source table, and the real Serbian vampire cases of 1725 and 1732.
What makes a vampire quote genuine?
A genuine vampire quote is a line found in the text it is credited to, with work, year and chapter attached. Skipping that check is how misquotes spread.
In the Gutenberg Dracula (eBook #345), "The strength of the vampire is that people will not believe in him" has zero matches; lists credit it to the 1931 film. A shared version of the Count's welcome reads "the night are is chill"; Stoker wrote "Come in; the night air is chill." "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" is film dialogue too.
12 public-domain vampire quotes, checked by chapter
Spelling follows Gutenberg, Van Helsing's broken English included. Byron's line numbers follow eBook #21811.
1. Lord Byron, The Giaour (1813)
The curse falls on the poem's hero at lines 759 to 762. It dooms him to feed on his own family:
"There from thy daughter, sister, wife, At midnight drain the stream of life; Yet loathe the banquet which perforce Must feed thy livid living corse"
2. John Polidori, The Vampyre (1819)
Lord Ruthven binds Aubrey to silence with an oath. The tale has no chapters.
- "Remember your oath." (Ruthven's whisper to Aubrey)
- "Aubrey's sister had glutted the thirst of a VAMPYRE!" (the closing line)
3. Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla (1872)
Carmilla's speeches to Laura started the romantic vampire. All three are from eBook #10007.
- "You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever." (chapter IV)
- "I live in your warm life, and you shall die—die, sweetly die—into mine." (chapter IV)
- "The vampire is prone to be fascinated with an engrossing vehemence, resembling the passion of love, by particular persons." (chapter XVI)
4. Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897)
These six skip the much-quoted wolves line. All come from eBook #345.
- "For the dead travel fast." (chapter I, quoting Bürger's "Lenore")
- "Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!" (chapter II, the Count)
- "take care how you cut yourself. It is more dangerous than you think in this country." (chapter II, the Count)
- "I have been so long master that I would be master still" (chapter II, the Count)
- "The blood is the life!" (chapter XI, Renfield)
- "He throws no shadow; he make in the mirror no reflect" (chapter XVIII, Van Helsing)
The table compares the vampire each book describes. Each row offers one line from the lists above.
| Source text | Year | Type of vampire | A line to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Byron, The Giaour | 1813 | Cursed corpse that feeds on its own family | "At midnight drain the stream of life" |
| Polidori, The Vampyre | 1819 | English lord moving through London society | "Remember your oath." |
| Le Fanu, Carmilla | 1872 | Countess who befriends, then feeds on, one girl | "you and I are one for ever" |
| Stoker, Dracula | 1897 | Transylvanian count with no reflection who needs an invitation | "Enter freely and of your own will!" |
In 84 years the vampire went from family curse to count with house rules. That is why Dracula gives the most caption-ready lines.

The real vampires: Serbia, 1725 to 1732
The vampire entered European print through Habsburg officials in Serbia, not novelists. In 1725 villagers in Kisilova blamed nine deaths in eight days on Petar Blagojević (Peter Plogojowitz), dug him up and staked him before an imperial official. At Medveđa the hajduk Arnold Paole was blamed for an outbreak, and the Austrian military report, dated 26 January 1732, circulated across Western Europe.
Polidori's 1819 introduction to The Vampyre retells the case from the London Journal of March 1732, garbled into "Arnold Paul" of "Madreyga, in Hungary." It describes the exhumed body as "fresh, and entirely free from corruption, and emitting at the mouth, nose, and ears, pure and florid blood."
The folklore vampire was a bloated villager who visited his own family and was stopped with a stake and fire. Stoker's Count is a nobleman who "may not enter anywhere at the first" unless invited, and whose "power ceases" at daybreak (chapter XVIII). Byron's 1813 note calls "the wetness of the lip with blood" one of "the never-failing signs of a Vampire."
Rabies, porphyria or decomposition: what scholars propose
No medical explanation is settled, and some are disputed. Here are four.
- Decomposition. Blood draining from the mouth and a bloated chest, the signs villagers looked for, are now known to be part of natural decomposition (Daniels-Higginbotham et al., Genes, 2019).
- Epidemic disease. The same study's "JB55", a man exhumed and mutilated in 19th-century Connecticut, had chronic lung infection, perhaps tuberculosis, the kind of death families blamed on vampires.
- Rabies. Neurologist Juan Gómez-Alonso proposed in Neurology in 1998 that rabies "may have played a key role," citing the timing and "striking similarities." It is an argument from resemblance, not a test.
- Porphyria. The light-sensitive blood disorder theory drew a 1995 Postgraduate Medical Journal letter titled "Porphyria and vampirism: another myth in the making". Treat it as disputed.
Putting a vampire quote on a Halloween page for one person
The interactive Halloween card with a haunted house lets you write a letter they read by flashlight in a dark attic, add up to six photos and carve a word on the pumpkin. "Enter freely" suits the moment they knock three times.
The closing question takes up to 60 characters, so "Will you be my boo for all eternity?" fits. The 1080×1920 Boo License at the end shows their photo in the costume you chose, and vampire is one of the eight; bestie mode asks "Will you be my boo-st friend forever?"
Across all page types, 90.9% of started SubhSandesh pages get published and shared. For gothic romance rather than Halloween, the Darling page, a dark and dramatic romantic page, suits better; 457 have been made, 8.8% of all pages.
When a vampire quote is the wrong choice
Byron's curse and Carmilla's "die, sweetly die" are about draining loved ones, so skip them for children and the recently bereaved. For kids use the funny list; the Halloween page's Kids tone has no blood and no gore.
The page is for one person, not a party or office channel. For someone in the same room, a handwritten card beats a link; with 48.3% of views on phones, a 20-word classic belongs on paper.
