Online Proposal Link: What Happens After You Send It

What actually happens to an online proposal link after you send it: whether it expires, who else can open a forwarded one, what the chat preview reveals before they tap, why a screenshot outlives the page, and how to take it down afterwards.

Key takeaways

  • โ€ข An online proposal link does not expire on a timer โ€” it ends when you delete it or the host shuts down, and only the first is in your control.
  • โ€ข A forwarded link is no longer private; a password is the only access control an unlisted URL has. 40.0% of SubhSandesh creators set one, measured platform-wide across all 4,524 pages, not on proposals alone.
  • โ€ข Chat preview cards are built from Open Graph tags that sit outside the password, so a locked page still shows a title on the lock screen.
  • โ€ข A screenshot outlives the link: it survives deletion, host shutdown and a password change, and you cannot remove it.
  • โ€ข 92.9% of started SubhSandesh pages are actually published and shared (4,204 of 4,524), and pages average 11.3 views each โ€” a view count is not a read receipt.

An online proposal link is a single private web page holding your question, and the moment you send it, control of that page passes to whoever holds the URL. It does not expire on its own โ€” it ends when you delete it or the company hosting it shuts down โ€” and a password is the only thing standing between a forwarded link and a stranger reading it.

On SubhSandesh, 40.0% of creators password-protect a page before sharing it (1,809 of 4,524), a platform-wide figure across all 16 page types rather than a proposal-specific rate, and 92.9% of started pages are actually finished and shared (4,204 of 4,524). What follows is what happens to the link itself: expiry, forwarding, chat previews, screenshots, whether you can tell it was opened, and how to take it down afterwards.

An online proposal link is a URL that opens one personalised page asking a specific person a specific question โ€” will you marry me, will you be my girlfriend, will you go out with me. Nothing is installed and nothing is posted publicly. It is also almost always a one-off: 3,456 registered SubhSandesh creators have built 4,524 pages between them, 1.31 each, so this is a page most people make once, for one person.

Whoever holds the link sees the page; whoever does not, does not. That is the entire access model, and it has a name: an unlisted URL. It is the same arrangement as an unlisted video or an "anyone with the link can view" document โ€” frictionless because there is no login in the way, and leaky for precisely that reason.

Most proposal pages carry both names, a written message, a few photos and a yes-or-no answer. The mechanics are near-identical across every tool that builds them. What differs, and what almost nobody publishes, is what the link does once it has left your hands.

Almost none of them expire on a timer. A proposal link stays live until the page is deleted or the company hosting it stops paying its bills โ€” two different endings, and only one of them is yours to control.

That distinction matters more than the marketing copy admits. A tool promising your link will stay active forever is making a claim about its own survival, not about the web, and a two-person startup cannot honestly make that promise for the next fifty anniversaries.

People are also bad at reasoning about deletion, and there is research on exactly this. In a SOUPS 2018 interview study of 22 participants plus two focus groups with seven data-deletion experts, Murillo and colleagues at Google found that many users' model of deletion stopped at the interface โ€” content counted as deleted once they could no longer see it โ€” and that generic expiration periods did not satisfy people, while expiration they could control did.

Apply that to a proposal. If you might want the page gone later โ€” a no, a change of plan, a relationship that ends โ€” check before you send that the tool gives you a delete control you can press yourself rather than a support address. Then accept the limit: deleting the page does not reach into their camera roll.

A companion SOUPS 2018 lab study of 30 participants on the ageing of digital artifacts tested pixelating, fading and shrinking as ways of letting old content decay, and found the visualisations closest to how memory actually fades were the most effective. A proposal page is the rare thing most people want ageing in the opposite direction.

Who else can open it once you have sent it

Anyone the link reaches. Forward it into a group chat and every member has exactly the access you gave your partner, because no ownership travels with a URL.

This is where the password stops being optional. 40.0% of SubhSandesh creators set one before sharing (1,809 of 4,524 pages) โ€” again, that is every page type on the platform, not proposals alone โ€” and the gap between that number and 100% is mostly people who never considered the second reader.

Research on how people handle this is worth knowing. Applying communication privacy management theory, Choi's 2021 survey of 397 active Facebook users found that perceiving boundless communication โ€” the sense that what you disclose will not stay where you put it โ€” predicted stricter boundary-ownership rules, which govern who may access the information, while leaving boundary-linkage rules unchanged. Plainly: people who expect their words to travel respond by controlling access, not by saying less.

That is the right instinct for a proposal. Do not write a smaller proposal because it might be forwarded โ€” lock it instead.

On the SubhSandesh proposal scrapbook page, the password is set at the same step as the share link. A privacy control placed one screen later is a privacy control most people skip.

Can you tell whether they actually opened it?

Partly. Most tools, SubhSandesh included, record views rather than reads: you learn that the page was opened and how often, not who opened it or whether they reached the last card.

The numbers suggest a page like this gets revisited rather than consumed once โ€” 51,164 recorded views across 4,524 pages, an average of 11.3 views per page. 48.9% of those views happen on a phone (25,008 of 51,164), which is also the reason a fourteen-character password is a bad password.

Be careful what you read into silence. A view with no reply can mean they are crying, commuting, sitting in an office where the page is blocked by a content filter, or down to 2% battery, and the counter cannot tell you which.

If you need a real answer, ask for it on a call. The link carries the question, not the conversation.

One first-party figure worth labelling honestly: the median gap between a page's first save and its last edit is 6.3 hours, sampled on the /love-gf template (n=1,136), not on proposals. It measures how long senders keep editing, not how long recipients take to answer.

What the chat preview shows before they tap

The preview card in WhatsApp, iMessage or Instagram is built by the app fetching your page and reading its Open Graph tags, the protocol that requires exactly four properties โ€” og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url โ€” with og:description as the optional fifth that most builders set.

Two consequences nobody mentions. First, those tags sit in front of the password, so a locked page still renders a full preview card. Second, that card is what anyone glancing at their lock screen sees, which makes the preview the leak rather than the page.

So if the surprise matters, the surprise must not be in the title. A page titled "Will you marry me?" has already been delivered by the notification, before they have chosen to look. Neither WhatsApp nor Instagram offers a per-message way to suppress a preview, so the fix sits on your side: keep the title neutral and put the question inside.

Where the proposal lives after you send it

Sending a link does not create one artifact. It creates four, and you control exactly one of them.

What they end up withWho can remove itDoes a password stop itSurvives if the page goes down
The live page at your linkYou, if the tool has a delete controlYes โ€” 40.0% of SubhSandesh creators set one, platform-wideNo

The takeaway is uncomfortable and worth saying plainly: a screenshot outlives the link. If you would regret the page existing in a year, assume a still image of it already exists somewhere you cannot delete from.

Propose Day 2027 falls on Monday 8 February 2027, and a great many links will be sent that morning. These are the cases where sending one is the worse option.

You are in the same room

Say it out loud. A link handed to someone sitting opposite you turns a moment into an errand, and the page's best property โ€” that it holds a story too long for a chat window โ€” is wasted on someone who can simply hear you.

Something needs repairing first

A proposal cannot do two jobs at once. If there is an unresolved fight sitting behind the question, the apology has to land on its own before the question means anything, and the apology dashboard page โ€” 1,095 pages created, 24.2% of everything built on the platform โ€” exists for that first step.

It is not a marriage proposal

"Will you be my girlfriend" is a different question with different stakes, and it deserves a page that is not dressed as an engagement. The I love you page is the most-used template on SubhSandesh โ€” 1,136 pages, 25.1% of everything created, and 16,345 views, 31.9% of all page views โ€” largely because it asks without escalating.

Someone else is looking at their screen

This is the failure mode people forget. In a CHI 2017 survey of 174 people about real shoulder-surfing incidents, Eiband and colleagues found the behaviour was overwhelmingly opportunistic rather than malicious, that what got observed was usually personal content โ€” interests, relationships, intimate details about other people โ€” and, most relevant here, that the person being watched noticed in only 7% of the incidents observers described. On a crowded local train at 9am, your proposal is a public document and neither of you will know it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almost none expire on a timer โ€” the page stays live until you delete it or the company hosting it shuts down. Those are two different endings, and only the first one is yours to control, so check that the tool gives you a delete button you can press yourself.
Only if the tool gives you a delete control; some make you email support instead. Even then, deleting the page does not remove any screenshot or screen recording the recipient already took, so treat deletion as removing the live page rather than erasing the moment.
Anyone holding the URL, with no login and no ownership attached. A password is the only thing that changes that โ€” 40.0% of SubhSandesh creators set one before sharing, measured platform-wide across all 4,524 pages rather than on proposals specifically.
It can. Chat apps build the preview card from the page's Open Graph tags, which sit outside any password, so a locked page still shows a title and image on the lock screen. Keep the title neutral and put the question inside the page.
You can usually see that the page was opened and how many times, but not who opened it or how far they got. Across SubhSandesh, pages average 11.3 views each from 51,164 recorded views, so a page being reopened several times is normal and tells you nothing on its own.
The screenshot becomes a permanent copy you cannot reach. It survives the page being deleted, the host shutting down and the password being changed, which is why a screenshot is the most durable version of your proposal and the one you control least.
It is unlisted, not private โ€” nothing is posted publicly, but anyone with the URL can open it. Setting a password turns an unlisted link into a genuinely private one, and it is the single most useful thing you can do before sending a proposal.
Office Wi-Fi content filters and heavy animation are both real failure modes, and a page that will not load turns a proposal into a technical support conversation. Send it when they are likely to be on their own phone rather than a work laptop.
No. A link handed to someone sitting opposite you turns a moment into an errand. The page earns its place when it holds a story too long for a chat window or bridges a distance you cannot cross that day.
Stakes and framing. A marriage proposal page is built around a single irreversible question, while an 'I love you' page asks without escalating โ€” it is the most-used template on SubhSandesh at 1,136 pages, 25.1% of everything created.
