Propose Girlfriend Shayari, and How a Sher Actually Works
Propose girlfriend shayari, explained as a form rather than dumped as a list: what a sher, matla, qafiya and radif actually are, eight original couplets in Devanagari with Roman and English, the register marked on each, and five lines cut for being wrong.

- • A sher is a two-line unit with a rhyme word (qafiya) and usually a repeated tail phrase (radif) — not a quote with a line break, which is why most copy-pasted lines land flat.
- • All 8 lines here are original and written as a matla, where both lines rhyme, because a couplet sent alone needs both lines to chime; 5 more were drafted and cut as incorrect.
- • Register decides the risk: 'qurbat' is genuine Urdu register and reads as showing off to someone who does not use those words, while 'khayal' and 'safar' are safe almost everywhere.
- • Rhyme buys unearned credibility — McGlone and Tofighbakhsh (Poetics, 1999) found rhyming aphorisms were judged more accurate than identical non-rhyming ones.
- • Platform-wide, SubhSandesh has 4,567 pages across 16 page types and 39.9% of creators password-protect before sharing (1,822 of 4,567); there is no proposal-page figure, so none is quoted.

Propose Girlfriend Shayari, and How a Sher Actually Works
A propose girlfriend shayari is a sher — a self-contained two-line unit with a rhyme word (qafiya) and usually a repeated tail phrase (radif) — not a caption with line breaks in it. That distinction is why most copy-pasted lines land flat. SubhSandesh has recorded 4,567 personalised pages built since 12 March 2026 across 16 page types, and platform-wide the most-created is the "I love you" page at 1,138 builds, 24.9% of the total. Below: what makes a sher work, eight original lines in Devanagari with Roman and English, and which register suits whom.
What a sher actually is
A sher is one couplet. Both lines share a metre; the second lands the turn. In a ghazal the shers are strung by rhyme, not plot — a 2011 University of Texas study notes that its couplets are thematically unrelated yet metrically and prosodically related, so any single sher can be lifted out and stand alone.
So sending one couplet is not an excerpt; it is the unit working as designed. But note what the form inherited. The ghazal came into Urdu from a Persian model, and Agnieszka Kuczkiewicz-Fraś, in Urdu Studies in 2020, describes its ishq as experienced in separation and never fulfilled, pain its distinctive mark. Classical shayari is built to ache. You are trying to get a yes.
How to tell a good sher from a bad one
Four things, and you can hear all four.
Qafiya is the rhyme word. A 2020 paper in the Indian Journal of Science and Technology, built on a 13.46-million-token Hindi–Urdu poetry corpus, calls qafiya the core element without which a piece is not Hindi/Urdu poetry at all — merely writing. The same paper defines radif as the phrasal suffix following the qafiya, repeated unchanged.
So in ghar lagta hai / safar lagta hai, the qafiya is ghar/safar and the radif lagta hai. If your two rhyme words are the same word, you have no qafiya — the commonest failure in a copy-pasted line.
Matla is the opening couplet, where both lines rhyme. Every line below is a matla: a sher sent alone needs both lines to chime, or the rhyme lands against nothing.
Bahr is metre. Classical scansion counts long and short syllables; the lines below are matched by syllable count instead — an approximation, not the same thing. Read each pair aloud: if one line outruns the other, the sher limps.
8 propose shayari lines for a girlfriend, with the register marked
Eight originals, written for this page: Devanagari, Roman, English sense, and who each suits.
1. The one that admits the delay
बहुत दिन चुप रहा, मगर अब कह रहा हूँ, तेरे बिन हर एक दिन अधूरा रह रहा हूँ।
bahut din chup raha, magar ab keh raha hoon, tere bin har ek din adhoora reh raha hoon.
"I stayed quiet a long time; I am saying it now — without you every day of mine stays unfinished."
Register: plain Hindi. Qafiya keh/reh, radif raha hoon. Suits a first confession to someone who reads no Urdu register.
2. The Urdu-lite one
तेरे बग़ैर ये दिल भी वीरान लगता है, तेरा ख़याल ही मेरी पहचान लगता है।
tere baghair ye dil bhi veeran lagta hai, tera khayal hi meri pehchaan lagta hai.
"Without you this heart feels deserted; the thought of you feels like my identity."
Register: baghair, veeran, khayal are Perso-Arabic, carried into everyday Hindi by film songs. Qafiya veeran/pehchaan, radif lagta hai. Safe for anyone.
3. The one that does not pressure her
सवाल तो मेरा है, जवाब तुम्हारा है, जल्दी कोई नहीं — ये वक़्त हमारा है।
sawaal to mera hai, jawaab tumhara hai, jaldi koi nahin — ye waqt hamara hai.
"The question is mine, the answer yours. No hurry — this time belongs to us both."
Register: neutral; sawaal, jawaab, waqt are universal. Qafiya tumhara/hamara, radif hai. Suits a real proposal she should feel free to refuse.
4. The one instead of a gift
न फूल है, न मोती, न कोई नज़राना है, बस एक सच्ची बात है, बस एक ठिकाना है।
na phool hai, na moti, na koi nazrana hai, bas ek sachchi baat hai, bas ek thikana hai.
"No flower, no pearl, no offering — one true thing to say, and one place to belong."
Register: nazrana is a mild step up in formality; the rest is plain. Qafiya nazrana/thikana, radif hai. For an empty-handed ask.
5. The one for a girlfriend of years
ये साथ बरसों का भी नया लगता है, तेरा हर लफ़्ज़ मुझको दुआ लगता है।
ye saath barson ka bhi naya lagta hai, tera har lafz mujhko dua lagta hai.
"Years together still feel new; every word of yours feels like a blessing."
Register: lafz, dua are Urdu-origin, widely understood. Qafiya naya/dua, radif lagta hai. Suits a long relationship, not a first ask.
6. The one about being afraid
डर है कि कहीं बात बदल न जाए, पर चुप रहा तो उम्र निकल न जाए।
dar hai ki kahin baat badal na jaaye, par chup raha to umr nikal na jaaye.
"I fear what we have might change; but if I stay quiet, a life slips past."
Register: plain Hindi. Qafiya badal/nikal, radif na jaaye. Suits proposing to a friend, where risk is the subject.
7. The one for distance
तू मिले तो हर रास्ता घर लगता है, तू न हो तो घर भी सफ़र लगता है।
tu mile to har raasta ghar lagta hai, tu na ho to ghar bhi safar lagta hai.
"When you are here every road feels like home; when you are not, home feels like a journey."
Register: neutral, one Perso-Arabic word (safar). Qafiya ghar/safar, radif lagta hai. Suits long distance, or a proposal before a move.
8. The properly Urdu one
तेरी क़ुर्बत का कोई भी मोल नहीं है, मेरे पास तेरे बिन कोई बोल नहीं है।
teri qurbat ka koi bhi mol nahin hai, mere paas tere bin koi bol nahin hai.
"No worth can be set on your nearness; without you I have no words."
Register: qurbat is genuine Urdu register; many Hindi readers will not know it. Qafiya mol/bol, radif nahin hai. Send only to someone who reads that vocabulary.
Five more were drafted and cut: one turned on kaho na, which reads as both "say no" and "do say"; one broke gender agreement between inaam and teri; one repeated its rhyme word; one wobbled its tense; one had no qafiya once pulled from its ghazal.
Which register suits whom
Register is the decision most shayari pages never mention. These eight fall into four bands.
| Register band | Lines here | Vocabulary example | Risk if mismatched |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain Hindi | 1, 6 | chup, adhoora, badal | None; may read plain |
| Urdu-lite (film-song) | 2, 5, 7 | khayal, lafz, safar | Very low in North India |
| Urdu register | 8 | qurbat, unwaan | Reads as showing off if those words are not hers |
| Neutral / no-pressure | 3, 4 | sawaal, jawaab, thikana | None; least poetic band |
Bands one, two and four are safe by default. Band three is a choice about her, not about you.
That mismatch has a history. Hiba Mirza, in a 2014 International Journal of Humanities and Social Science study of Delhi mushairas, records that older practice used obsolete and difficult words to highlight the vocabulary skills of the poet, and that this excluded the masses — while today's mushairas prefer simpler language. Your proposal is a mushaira with one listener.
A rhymed line also feels more true than the same sentence unrhymed. McGlone and Tofighbakhsh, in Poetics in 1999, had people rate unfamiliar aphorisms in rhyming and non-rhyming forms of identical meaning; both were judged equally comprehensible, but the rhyming versions were perceived as more accurate. That is shayari's quiet mechanism, and a warning: rhyme buys credibility your sentence has not earned.
तू, तुम or आप — the pronoun carries more than the vocabulary
Lines 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8 use tu/tera; lines 3 and 4 use tum/tumhara. Not an accident.
Tu is the intimate second person: right for a girlfriend of years, presumptuous towards someone you have not asked yet. Tum is warm and safe. Aap is respectful and usually too formal for a proposal.
Swapping a pronoun breaks the metre, so do not just substitute the word. Line 7 in tum becomes tum milo to har raasta ghar lagta hai — a syllable longer, and it limps. Rewrite or pick another.
Where a page beats a message, and where it does not
If the sher is the whole gesture, send the sher. One couplet in a chat at the right moment is often exactly correct, and no page improves on it.
A page earns its place when the sher opens something longer. If you are asking her to marry you, the proposal scrapbook page that ends in a YES button gives the couplet somewhere to sit: your story first, the question last. If this is "will you be my girlfriend", the romantic "I love you" page is the honest fit.
What SubhSandesh can and cannot tell you about those routes:
| Route for the sher | First-party usage | Median first-save to last-edit | Password-protected before sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| "I love you" page | 1,138 pages, 24.9% of 4,567, platform-wide | 6.4 hours, n = 1,138, sampled on /love-gf | 39.9%, platform-wide (1,822 of 4,567) |
| Proposal scrapbook page | no proposal-specific figure exists | not measured | 39.9%, platform-wide (1,822 of 4,567) |
| One sher in a chat | not measured | n/a | n/a |
Every figure above is platform-wide across 16 page types, or sampled on /love-gf. No proposal-page data exists, so none is quoted.
The case against a page at all: if she does not read Devanagari comfortably, a page full of it is a wall, not a gift. If the relationship is in trouble, a sher is decoration on an unresolved problem. To see what else exists, browse the full template list — but a well-chosen couplet, sent alone, is not the lesser choice.
