How to Propose to a Girl in Marathi: The Words and the Order

Say it in three moves: ask for two minutes, say one plain sentence, then hand her the decision and stop. The sentence is the hard part, because Marathi verbs agree with the speaker's gender — मी सांगतो if a man says it, मी सांगते if a woman does — so every line here is printed in both forms.

SubhSandesh has no proposal-specific numbers to offer: a read-only probe of that collection is refused by this machine's production-read policy. Below: the sequence, eight checked sentences, and the one tense that sidesteps gender entirely.

Propose Day 2027 is Monday 8 February — I checked the weekday rather than copying it. Rose Day is Sunday 7 February and Valentine's Day is Sunday 14 February, so Propose Day is the only weekday of the three.

What "propose" means in Marathi, and why it is usually not a marriage proposal

In Indian English, propose almost always means asking someone to be your girlfriend, not asking them to marry you, and Marathi keeps the two apart.

The relationship ask has no fixed Marathi phrase — it goes into ordinary sentences, which is why this query has no single "right line". The marriage ask does have a fixed word: लग्न (lagna), attested as an ordinary noun in the Universal Dependencies Marathi treebank, as in लग्न करशील का? Get that wrong on 8 February and you skip four years of a relationship in one sentence.

Why the same Marathi sentence changes when a woman is the one asking

Marathi marks grammatical gender far more widely than English, and the verb is where it bites. In the Universal Dependencies Marathi treebank, a manually annotated corpus, 1,747 tokens — 45% of the total — carry a gender value, including 360 verb tokens, exactly 50% of all verbs.

All nouns carry gender too: प्रेम (prem, love) is annotated neuter, which is why the possessive before it is माझं, not माझा.

So there is no gender-neutral way to write most Marathi sentences, and a speaker hears the choice immediately. Worse, two genders are in play at once — yours, and hers. The treebank has रडतोस (masculine, second person) and समजलीस (feminine, second person) beside सांगतो and आलो (masculine, first person).

The one tense that does not make you choose

I counted the released treebank files myself. Across all three splits — 466 sentences, 4,176 tokens — there are 22 finite future-tense verb forms, and not one carries a gender feature: करशील, मागशील, विचारीन, येईल, देईल, असेल, लागेल and the rest are identical whoever is speaking. Compare the present, where 41 of 50 finite imperfective forms are gender-marked; the nine that are not are plurals.

That is an instruction, not a curiosity. Ask in the future tense and the sentence does not change — which is why line 3 works for a man or a woman unedited.

Eight sentences for proposing in Marathi, in both speaker-gender forms

Each gives the line, the register, when it fits and when it does not. Wiktionary's Marathi entries gloss तू as "least formality, grammatically singular" and तुम्ही as "mid-level formality, grammatically plural" — तू for someone you are close to, तुम्ही for someone you are not.

1. Asking for two minutes

Both speakers: मला तुला एक गोष्ट सांगायची आहे — आता वेळ आहे का? — malā tulā ek goṣṭa sāṅgāycī āhe — ātā veḷ āhe kā? — "I have one thing to tell you. Is there time now?"

Register: तू. Use it when you want her sitting down, not mid-errand. Skip it if you are already in a serious conversation, where it sounds like a warning.

The verb does not change with your gender: सांगायची agrees with गोष्ट, a feminine noun, not with you.

2. Saying you are about to be honest

Man speaking: मी आज खरं सांगतो. Woman speaking: मी आज खरं सांगते. — mī āj kharaṁ sāṅgato / sāṅgate — "I'll say it straight today."

Register: तू or तुम्ही. Use it when you have circled the subject for weeks. Skip it if you then do not say the thing — it promises a landing.

सांगतो is annotated first person masculine in the treebank; सांगते is its feminine counterpart, on the pattern of म्हणतो/म्हणते.

3. The marriage ask, in the future tense

Both speakers: तू माझ्याशी लग्न करशील का? — tū mājhyāśī lagna karśīl kā? — "Will you marry me?"

Register: तू. Use it when you mean marriage and both families are a live topic. Skip it if you are asking her out for the first time.

करशील is second person future, and carries no gender at all.

4. The relationship ask

Man speaking: मी तुला विचारतो — आपण एकत्र येऊ या का? Woman speaking: मी तुला विचारते — आपण एकत्र येऊ या का? — mī tulā vicārto / vicārte — āpaṇ ekatra yeū yā kā? — "I'm asking you — shall we be together?"

Register: तू. Use it when this is the ask most people mean by "propose". Skip it if you are already together — it reads as a step backwards.

आपण is the inclusive "we" in the treebank, which makes the question joint rather than demanding.

5. The love sentence, and the trap inside it

Both speakers: माझं तुझ्यावर प्रेम आहे. — mājhaṁ tujhyāvar prem āhe — "I love you." This one does not change, because माझं agrees with प्रेम, which is neuter.

But: मी तुझ्यावर प्रेम करतो (man) / प्रेम करते (woman) does change, because there the verb agrees with you.

Register: तू. Use it when the relationship already exists. Skip it if this is a first ask — it lands as a statement of fact, not a question, and leaves her nothing to answer.

6. Taking the pressure off

Man speaking: उत्तर आज नको, मी थांबतो. Woman speaking: उत्तर आज नको, मी थांबते. — uttar āj nako, mī thāmbto / thāmbte — "I don't need the answer today. I'll wait."

Register: तू. Use it when she has gone quiet. Skip it if you have used it once — said twice it becomes pressure in a polite coat.

7. If the answer is no

Man speaking: ठीक आहे, मी समजू शकतो. Woman speaking: ठीक आहे, मी समजू शकते. — ṭhīk āhe, mī samjū śakto / śakte — "That's all right. I can understand."

Register: तू. Use it when you want the friendship to survive the evening. Skip it if you do not mean it.

8. The line you can put in writing afterwards

Both speakers: आज सांगितलं ते खरं होतं, उद्या तेच असेल. — āj sāṅgitlaṁ te kharaṁ hotaṁ, udyā tec asel — "What I said today was true. Tomorrow it will be the same."

Register: तू. Use it when you are sending a message the next morning. Skip it if she has said no — it reads as re-asking.

Both verbs are gender-free — the safest kind of line for a page someone might read over her shoulder.

What was cut. I drafted 21 lines and published 8. The thirteen cuts were boring rather than stylistic: आवडतेस, होशील and the आत्ता spelling are not attested in the treebank and have no Marathi Wiktionary entry; four leaned on सोबत, वाट and भर in senses I could not confirm; two used the relative जे; three overlapped with the companion pages propose-day-quotes-in-marathi, copy-text you lift, and propose-day-wishes-in-marathi, wishes sorted by register. This page is the method; those two are the lines.

The sequence: the ten minutes before, the sentence, and the silence after

Pick the moment before the words. A weekday Propose Day means she is at work or in class on 8 February, so the windows are morning, lunch, or after seven.

Then: ask for the two minutes. Say one sentence, not three, and name the ask — girlfriend or marriage — inside it. Then stop.

The silence is the part nobody writes about, and filling it is how a clean ask becomes a negotiation. If she says nothing for thirty seconds, use line 6 and leave. If she says no, use line 7 and go home.

Which page fits which ask

These are English-language templates. They hold Marathi text fine, but the buttons, prompts and headings around it are in English.

The takeaway is the first row: most people searching this phrase want the girlfriend ask, so the marry-me scrapbook is the wrong tool. Build the "I love you" page and keep लग्न for later.

When a Marathi line, or a page, is the wrong choice

If she does not read Devanagari comfortably — plenty of Marathi speakers read English faster — a transliterated line beats a beautiful one she has to decode.

If you are in the same room, say it out loud. A link is a worse object than your voice at arm's length; the page is for what she keeps afterwards, or for distance.
