Propose Message in Marathi: 8 Messages Built on आपण
Eight complete propose messages in Marathi, each with Roman transliteration, an English gloss, the तू or तुम्ही register and both speaker-gender forms — built on आपण, the inclusive "we" Hindi does not have. Twelve of twenty drafts were cut against Molesworth and a treebank.

- • Marathi has a dedicated inclusive "we" — आपण means "you and I", आम्ही means "I and others, not you" — and picking the wrong one grammatically excludes the person you are proposing to.
- • Grambank codes the inclusive/exclusive feature as present for Marathi and absent for Hindi; of 16 Indo-Aryan languages coded for it, only Marathi and Maithili have it.
- • Twenty messages were drafted and twelve cut against Molesworth's 1857 dictionary, English Wiktionary and the UD Marathi-UFAL treebank; eight survived.
- • Six of the eight need no speaker-gender decision, which matters given 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views happen on a phone (27,499 of 56,886, measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide).
- • आपण is also the highest-formality second-person pronoun, so pair it with a first-person-plural verb such as करूया or राहूया to kill the ambiguity.

Propose Message in Marathi: 8 Messages Built on आपण
A propose message in Marathi is a complete sentence you type into one person's chat box and send — not a quotable line, not a dated greeting, not a method. The eight below are in Devanagari with Roman transliteration and an English gloss, marked for the तू or तुम्ही register, and given in both speaker-gender forms wherever the verb inflects. All eight turn on आपण, the Marathi first-person plural that includes the person spoken to.
For scale: SubhSandesh has recorded 5,148 personalised pages created since 2026-03-12, across 21 page types, and 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,499 of 56,886 views) — both measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide, neither specific to proposals. Below: the pronoun, the messages, and the twelve lines cut.
What counts as a propose message, and what does not
A message is addressed to one named person and expects a reply. A quote is a line anyone could read; a wish is pinned to a date; advice is a method.
That separation already does work here. The Marathi Propose Day quotes page groups lines by who is asked, the Marathi wishes page sorts them by register, and the Marathi how-to-propose page prints both speaker-gender forms. None of their lines is reused here.
One number before choosing between a message and a page: 90.9% of started SubhSandesh pages are published and shared (4,679 of 5,148), measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide across 21 page types. A message needs no page.
आपण or आम्ही: Marathi has a word for the "us" you are asking for
Marathi separates an inclusive "we" from an exclusive one. आपण (āpaṇ) means I and you. आम्ही (āmhī) means I and some others, but not you.
English collapses both into we, and so does Hindi.
This is documented typology, not a folk claim. Grambank, the CC BY database built from published grammars, codes feature GB028 — "Is there a distinction between inclusive and exclusive?" — as present for Marathi, citing Dhongde and Wali (2009: 48–50).
Across Grambank's release, 16 Indo-Aryan languages carry a GB028 code and only two are present: Marathi and Maithili. Hindi is absent, as are both Panjabis, Odia, Nepali, Kashmiri and, oddly, Konkan Marathi. Of 35 Dravidian languages coded, 26 are present.
Cysouw's WALS chapter records that no European language has the distinction, and that Kannada lost it under Indo-Aryan influence. Marathi sits on the other side of that contact zone and kept it.
The annotated Universal Dependencies Marathi-UFAL treebank — 466 sentences, 4,176 tokens — confirms it in data. Five tokens carry the Clusivity feature; all five read In, all five are pronouns marked Number=Plur|Person=1, and the only lemma is आपण. None is tagged Ex.
That matches Beata Moskal's 2018 Glossa finding that ABA suppletion patterns do not arise in the 1SG–1EXCL–1INCL triple, which she argues shows the inclusive is the most marked of the three. The special form is the one that includes you.
Pick आम्ही by mistake and the sentence grammatically excludes the person you are asking. And the choice is social work, not only grammar: Wieczorek's 2009 CADAAD paper argues clusivity rests on a container schema, the speaker drawing the boundary of "us", while Scotto di Carlo's study of 2012 TED Talks found inclusive pronouns constructing positive politeness, so "I" and "you" become "we". Marathi does it in one word.
The catch
आपण is not a clean win: the same form is also the highest-formality second-person pronoun, so आपण कोण? means "Who are you?".
Molesworth's 1857 Dictionary, Marathi and English calls आपण "a representative or referential pronoun, standing indifferently for I, thou, he, we, ye, they" and records the honorific use — it never glosses an inclusive "we". The clusivity reading is modern, not Victorian.
The fix is mechanical: pair आपण with a first-person-plural verb and the ambiguity dies, because a second-person reading cannot take that ending. The treebank attests it — आपण त्याच्यासाठी काही करूया, चला आपण जाऊ.
8 propose messages in Marathi
Where the verb agrees with the speaker's gender, both forms are given: first male speaker, then female.
1. The plain ask
तुला एक विचारायचं आहे — आपण एकत्र सुरुवात करूया का? Tulā ek vicārāycha āhe — āpaṇ ekatra suruvāt karūyā kā? "There's one thing I want to ask you — shall we make a start together?" Register तू. No gendered form needed: विचारायचं and करूया serve both.
2. After a long wait
मी खूप वेळ थांबलो. आज विचारतो — आपण एकत्र राहूया का? मी खूप वेळ थांबले. आज विचारते — आपण एकत्र राहूया का? Mī khūp veḷ thāmblo / thāmble. Āj vicārto / vicārte — āpaṇ ekatra rāhūyā kā? "I waited a long time. Today I'm asking — shall we be together?" Register तू. Gender marked twice: थांबलो/थांबले, विचारतो/विचारते.
3. Respectful, for someone you do not know well
तुम्हाला हे सांगायला मला वेळ लागला. आपण एकत्र राहूया का? Tumhālā he sāngāylā malā veḷ lāglā. Āpaṇ ekatra rāhūyā kā? "It took me time to say this to you. Shall we be together?" Register तुम्ही, unmarked. Here the आपण ambiguity is harmless: the formality is already set, so it cannot read as a shift in tone.
4. The marriage ask
तुला एक विचारतो. आपण लग्न करूया का? तुला एक विचारते. आपण लग्न करूया का? Tulā ek vicārto / vicārte. Āpaṇ lagna karūyā kā? "I'm asking you one thing. Shall we get married?" Register तू, marked on विचारतो/विचारते. The verb sits on आपण, not on her — the sentence the inclusive was made for.
5. Taking the pressure off
उत्तर आज नको. तू विचार कर. मी थांबतो. उत्तर आज नको. तू विचार कर. मी थांबते. Uttar āj nako. Tū vicār kar. Mī thāmbto / thāmbte. "Not an answer today. You think about it. I'll wait." Register तू, marked on थांबतो/थांबते. Send after the ask, never instead.
6. Making a no survivable
नकार आला तरी चालेल. मी विचारलं, आणि आता तुला माहित आहे. Nakār ālā tarī cālel. Mī vicārlam, āṇi ātā tulā māhit āhe. "Even if a no comes, that's fine. I asked, and now you know." Register तू, unmarked. If the answer is no, this is the last message: a refusal is information, not an opening bid.
7. For a partner you already have
आपण एकत्र आहोत — हे मला आज पुन्हा सांगायचं आहे. Āpaṇ ekatra āhot — he malā āj punhā sāngāycha āhe. "We are together — I want to say that again today." Register-neutral: no second-person pronoun appears, and आहोत, the first-person-plural copula, locks आपण into the inclusive reading.
8. The one where आम्ही is correct
आम्ही दोघं एकत्र आहोत. हे तुम्हाला सांगायचं होतं. Āmhī doghaṁ ekatra āhot. He tumhālā sāngāycha hotam. "The two of us are together. I wanted to tell you that." Register तुम्ही. Not sent to the person being proposed to — it goes to parents or a friend, and आम्ही is right because the reader is outside the couple.
Which message fits which chat
Six of the eight need no gender decision, which matters when typing fast. The last column applies SubhSandesh's own 48.3% phone-view figure.
| Message | Register | Gendered forms | Screen it lands on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1, plain ask | तू | 0 | Private chat, lock screen |
| 2 and 4, the real asks | तू | 2 each | Private chat, replied to alone |
| 3, respectful | तुम्ही | 0 | A shared household phone |
| 5 and 6, after the ask | तू | 1 and 0 | Same thread, minutes later |
| 8, telling the family | तुम्ही | 0 | A screenshot-able group |
The likelier a second reader, the more you want तुम्ही.
How these were checked, and the twelve lines cut
Twenty messages were drafted; twelve were cut. The standard was lexical: every content word had to appear in Molesworth via DSAL, in an English Wiktionary Marathi entry citing Berntsen, or as an attested token in UD Marathi-UFAL.
The cuts were not close calls. मला तू हवी आहेस — "I want you" — died because हवें returns zero Molesworth results and Wiktionary's हवा carries only "air, wind, weather". आवडणें and आवड return zero results too, so every line built on आवडतेस went.
मोठा and एवढा have no Marathi Wiktionary section, killing two more. जमूया went because Molesworth glosses जमणें as "to assemble; to congeal, coagulate", not "to be compatible".
A separate screen ran a Hindi blocklist over every Devanagari token — मैं, हम, तुम, तुम्हें, मुझे, मेरा, तेरा, हूँ, है, हैं, नहीं, प्यार, जिंदगी, बहुत, सिर्फ, लेकिन, और, भी, दिल, हमेशा — with zero hits. Marathi-only forms carry the load: आहे, आहोत, आणि, फक्त, तुला, आपण, आम्ही.
If the ask deserves more than a notification, a proposal scrapbook page holds the story and ends on a YES button — and 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page before sharing (1,983 of 5,148, measured 2026-09-24, platform-wide), the number that matters when a phone is shared at home.
When a Marathi message, or a page, is the wrong choice
The templates are English-language. The proposal scrapbook and every other page here are built in English; there is no Marathi template, and the live blog corpus holds zero pages in any Indian language. Your Marathi goes in the message, not the page.
/proposal is also usually the wrong page here. In Indian usage "propose" almost always means asking someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend, not to marry you, so a marriage scrapbook sent for a first ask reads as escalation. The "I love you" page fits better — third most-created page type at 1,178 pages, 22.9% of everything created, measured 2026-09-24 — and The Invitation fits better still when you want a date, not a declaration.
Most often, send nothing but the message. Messages 1, 4 and 6 do not improve when wrapped in anything. A page earns its place when there is a story to show, and is dead weight when the content is one rehearsed line.
Propose Day 2027 falls on Monday 8 February, a working day — one more argument for one well-typed sentence.
